This 8 1/2-minute mini-documentary is an excellent introduction to what is at stake in the upcoming Wiwa v. Shell trial. It was produced by Rikshaw Films for EarthRights International (ERI) & the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), the plaintiffs’ co-counsel in the case.

For over thirteen years, multinational oil giant Royal Dutch Shell has done everything in its power to stop a trial from taking place at which the company must answer to charges that it colluded with the Nigerian military to commit serious human rights abuses to quell peaceful resistance to its operations in the Niger Delta region called Ogoni, including conspiring to bring about the conviction and execution of Ogoni leader Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight of his colleagues.

There has been a flurry of media attention as the lawyers prepare for battle in the courtroom. However, some of the most interesting events are happening behind-the-scenes in the lead up to the trial. They show that Shell continues to do everything in its power to keep the truth from coming out.

TL;DW/R: Shell funded and solicited Nigerian troops to buttrape Nigerians and take their black gold.

So whats new?  They also oxygenate their gas too much, and its full of preservatives so it'll eventually burn out your spark plugs.  etter to buy Chevron.

I don't know anything about this and don't like to make comments without seeing the counter arguments, but if this is true it would be above and beyond your run of the mill oil company douchebaggery. Not something to just accept.

I wrote a paper on this... It's real fucked up and corporations that support abuses of human rights around the world should be held accountable.

I think the case has a good chance because there was a precident set in the case of UNOCAL (a Californian based oil company) that was working with the oppressive regime in Myanmar (Burma) and villages were razed in order for the pipeline to get through. I hope they win quickly and decisively, (won't happen), just so all corporations know that they are not immune from the law and human rights simply because they are abroad. They have done terrible things to many people.

ya i saw the video delta force which is all about this ken saro-wiwa ogoni people stuff in environmental science.Its a pretty big deal but really you just gotta choose where you spend your money, if everyone did than wed take em outa business but theres nothing anyone can really do

I'm not one of those 'oh man the corporations man' guys, but some of the shit they pull is just not cool. Kinda makes you just wanna bitch slap those fuckers and drag 'em by the ear to their mom's house just so they get the ass-whoopin of a lifetime.

actually, i'm one of those guys.

when power is as concentrated as they are in these monoliths, it's just simply naive to presume ethical behavior is the status quo.  quite the opposite.
