NZ jobs/ Rant

(start rant) So I just graduated college with a degree in ski resort management. Before I graduated I decided I wanted to go on an adventure. Since I had missed a bunch of the ski season with a knee injury I decided that getting Terrain Park job in NZ for the summer would be perfect. I put together what i thought was a solid resume and cover letter with good references.  I then applied in mid April. After a couple weeks of constant emailing checking I found out that they were not going to make decisions until after position deadlines closed. I then restarted my compulsive emailing checking after the positions closed near the end of April. Eventually I got another email saying that they still had not decided but they would soon. After even more time and no response I started sending them emails to see what was going on. I didn't get any responses from any of the various people I tried to email and call. Finally, today I found out that i didnt get the job. What was most frustrating was not that I didnt get the job ( i understand that there could be more qualified people or that they wanted to hire people from NZ) but the fact that because I had wanted the job so bad I turned down several other job opertunities waiting for their decision. Also, if it took them so long to decide I would think they would at least have done a thourough job. But they didnt even contact any of my references or do a phone interview with me. I wish they could have just told ealier so I didnt have to waste almost 2 months waiting for thier decision. (end rant)

Because i have nothing to do for the summer and a graduation present of a ticket to nz I still want to go to nz. Anybody know how hard it is to get a job in nz this late. Idealy I would like to get a job at a resort and in a Park if at all possable, but I would work anywhere.

Also are there any resonable places to stay where I could live and ski until i was able to find a job?

Sorry for the long ass rant , i doubt anybody will read all of it, just needed to get it off my chest. Any help is apprcieated.

im from nz and cant really say, but one thing is for sure: kiwis are complacent. unfortunately, your story does not surprise me too much.

Due to the economic climate many tourism firms are having to reconsider their operations and capacity and this slows everything down.

Rule # 1 : never turn down a job if you don't have another one secured

I understand you being unsatisfied though

I didnt name the resort because i didnt want be a winey bitch badmouthing a place just because I didnt get hired. I already sounded winey enough. I know I was an idiot turning down other jobs. I just was just really excited about the job so I didnt use my head at all. Thats all on me.  And for the people saying bad things about nz, i wasent blaming nz or trying to charecterize the people. I could see the same thing happening at my mountain. It has nothing to do with nz it just happened to take place there. It was mostly my fault, I was just upset about it.

Dude! i hear ya man. i got fucked outta NZ twice. i was all set to go, had a shop job lined up, and then blew my knee. second time i just couldnt get a job. it sucks. thats lame they fucked you like that tho. at least you still get to go tho. and you can find something to make dough im sure.

I have never traveled to NZ.  But I think I get where you are coming from.  I was in a similar situation this summer.  I worked for Timberline Lodge for two summers.  This summer my old boss left and I could not get in touch with the other one.  I called HR and had to go through the application process all over again.  Called every other day and all that jazz.  Called yesterday and everything was filled up.

im trying to decide if I should look for places in Wanaka or Queenstown. I like to ski both pow/big mountain and park.

i wouldnt bother looking for jobs on NZ skifields, they are turning people away and have signs on offices telling people not to apply.if you want a job on an NZ skifield you gotta get in reeeeaaaal early, and especially park jobs, they get 10 times the number of jobs available in applications at least. so you also gotta be damn good at what you do. or know people. right now id imagine there would be no way to get a job on a skifield easily. i turned down a job on park crew at remarkables NZ..slightly regretting it but university calls.

To be fair.. emailing them continously while the application deadline hadn't passed was a bit over the top. What employer is going to say "no, I don't want to see any of the other potential CVs... this guy is hired!"?

You may have scared them off with all your "compulsive emailing"?

Though it does suck that you didn't get the job in the end.

i wasent emailing them. I was checking my email to see if i had gotten any word from them. I didnt email them until three weeks after they closed the positions. But whatever it doesn't really matter anyways.
