Cigars

yes, you read right...  cigars.  fathers day is next month and since now im 20 i want to get a gift for my dad that actually requires some thought rather than the typical stupid tie, socks, or gift certificate thing and i know he used to enjoy a good cigar every once in awhile so i thought i may see if i could find a box of cigars, a decent cutter, and cigar lighter.  thing is, i know nothing, and i mean NOTHING about cigars or any of the tools involved with cigars.  like, i know its better to cut the cigars than bite off the ends but past that nothing.  figured someone here must know at least a little something about them and i would start my search here and complete it at my local smoke shop once school is out.  (there isnt a smoke shop out here...  no cigar shop, cigarette shop, or even really a hookah/glass shop...  the nearest one is over 30 minutes away and i have no real transportation or money at this point...  stupid school)  any help would be appreciated....

damn. a good cutter, lighter, & box of cigars is going to set you back some loot. You can easily drop over a hundred bucks on a cutter alone. that's a hell of a fd present from a college kid.

ill put it this way, i fucked up hardcore with grades and the like at school last year and feel like i owe my mom and dad.  for my mom's birthday/christmas (her birthday is in november) i picked up a set of diamond earrings and a ring for my mom.  last year my mom and i got together and got my dad a grill and i figure this year i should get something by myself as a way of saying thanks for putting up with me after my hardcore fuck up.

plus im working for the city of Bellingham so i get upwards of 1000 bucks every paycheck so one or two paychecks and i could do this and then just keep saving the rest for school.

Cigars are complicated man..... They can be smooth, rich, dry, harsh, etc.... Its a lot like people asking what park skis to buy....

That being said, a good affordable, smooth cigar IMO is Macanudo. Cohiba is a little harsh and rich but another good choice.

i would recommend buying your dad just one or two nice cigars (they are like 20-30$ a piece) because a box of really good cigars is like 500$ plus, thats really all I know but if their is a cigar shop around you im sure they could help you out alot more

im currently about 400-500 miles away from home....  so im waiting to hunt down a cigar shop until i get home from college but i figured i could walk in and tell them what im looking for and the guy behind the counter could probably help me.

nonsense. recommending a cigar is no big deal. i'd look for something with a medium wrapper- we don't know what your dad smokes and we don't want to insult him with a pansie-ass light wrapper, but he also might not like a really dark one. the color determines how robust and rich the flavor is.

with this in mind, i'd HIGHLY recommend the Fuente Fuente Opus X. it's an amazing cigar. good, mellow taste, virtually no aftertaste (typically, the only aftertaste you'll get is a bitterness resulting from the leaves not being cured properly), very smooth smoke, and consistently one of the most popular cigars in the world. it's a medium-colored wrapper with a label you can't miss. you pay for quality, though, with a box of three typically running close to $100. they're worth it, though. trust me- i'm smoking one right now.

as for a cutter, i'd look for a punch. using a punch leaves less space for the tobacco to fall out and end up in your mouth and it usually considered to be a bit "classier". you can find punch cutters for as cheap as $20 that will do you just fine (there are much cheaper ones than that, but i've had tons of them fall apart... i wouldn't waste your time).

be ready to drop some coin on the stick, though... quality cigars are not cheap.

the last cigar my dad had was back in 1996 i think...  and knowing the way my dad is im pretty sure he has no idea what he liked.  seriously, we were in canada and being 20 i ordered a beer and asked for i think it was a Sapporo (japanese resturant) and he was asked and the response was "a cold one".....  my dad is super simplistic.  thanks though.  im just assuming its better to go buy cigars in person though rather than having them sent through the mail if i were to buy them online yes?

i have no clue on fuente as the bar i worked at did not sell them. could be a solid recommendation????

in your case, yes. if you know what you're looking for, the internet can be a great place to find rare shit, but i'd recommend you just go to a cigar shop, tell them what you're trying to do, and they ought to help take care of you.

one thing, though... if your dad doesn't know anything about cigars, why drop a few bills on them? get him something he'll really appreciate.

i love punches and have been smoking cigars since i was 16 (i'm 23 now)... and seeing how this kid and his dad ARE amateurs, i'd say it would fit the bill, according to you, perfectly. to each their own.

as for you not knowing about Fuente Fuente Opus X, that's equally as amateurish, especially for someone who worked at a bar. it's one of the top cigars on the planet. get learned.

what my dad did was he would buy cigars (and this is funny with him being the captain of the boat) through a friend that was something of a cigar connesouir (totally butchered that) so he knows what a good one tastes like, just like he knows what a shitty one tastes like.  cause i bought some cheap ones last year for myself and we ended up just burning them and my dad went in and bought some mid range stuff like what he smoked when he was in the navy....  he smoked the expensive shit when he was working on the LNG ships in japan.

in that case, the Opus X... if he knows a good stick like you say, he'll greatly appreciate the Opus X. anyone who's interested in finding a truly great cigar would be wise to give it a try, as well.

amateurish? how is admitting that we didn't sell something and I haven't tried something amateurish? Sounds like honesty to me..... we carried a decent selection but certainly not everything.

as for the punch, its what we recommended to the ladies.... seriously. just my own two cents.

i'd consider my $90 gold-plated punch to be just fine. ladies AND gents welcome.

and acting like an authority without knowing the Mercedes S-class of the cigar world comes off as... amateurish. luckily, though, it will take two puffs to know what's up. go grab one, man. you'll be glad you did.

one of these, and on closer inspection i think mine actually has a punch on it...  sweet...  just wish something outside of garbage for cigars here in Cheney, WA...  ARGH!!!!!  i want a smoke so damn bad, hookah or cigar i dont give a shit.

i don't even know the brand of punch i have, but i got it at the Casa Fuente at the Caesar's Palace Forum Shops... home of the Fuente Fuente Opus X here in Vegas. let's put it this way- if a cigar has a store on the Strip, it's worth looking into.

i just wish i knew what kind of lighter it is cause my dad loves it (we smoke hookah together once in awhile...  who else can say they smoke hookah with their 70 year old dad?) and he loves it but i sure as shit am not giving him mine.

yeah dude, the opus x is known by noobs so i dunno how someone who worked at a bar would not know it. good cigar though for sure. id say maybe pick him up a humidor and bunch of nice cigars, as for a mild cigar i would suggest a montecristo #2 or a dunhill aged dominican cabreras.

If your dad doesnt smoke that often you cant go wrong getting a good mild body cigar. I enjoy montecristo whites, olivia, and my favorite currently is perdomo. CAO also makes a good cigar. If you are going to a reputable smoke shop ask the guys what they would recomend. As for lighters i would definatly get him a butane lighter. i have a relatively cheep cutter as well. never had problems with it leaving a shitty cut. good luck and dont hesitate to ask questions

Yeah my buddies dad that collects cigars has said that too, but he says its just the newer ones, something about the nutrients in the soil getting depleted, so maybe older ones?

so ive decided i may just get like 2 or 3 cigars, a storage box thing (humidifier or something like that is what its called right?), a set of maybe guillotine cutters or a punch, and a lighter...  whats a good type of lighter for cigars though?  one of those mini butane ones?

i smoked Oliva coronas for a whole summer and always had a problem with the wrapper separating from the filler. my dad has a great cigar connection back in MI (i'm in Vegas now, only one "connection" we've made here, but he offers legitimate Cubans... but i digress) who was selling him boxes of Olivas at cost, so i just kept smoking them, but i don't think i would have paid for them after the first half dozen or so did that. good flavor, just maybe i got a bad batch or something, but the construction left something to be desired.

i just smoked a Cuban Cohiba 30 Anniversary a week or so ago... very good cigar.

a nice lighter with one or two punch sizes is always a good idea, then just get a decent cigar or two.

and yes i read the thread, but a very nice lighter with just a mediocre cigar can be a really good gift too.

or go out of the country and get something absurdly nice for way cheaper haha, thats what my brother always does for my dad.

Master Blends 3 series.  If you can get him a 2 series that would be amazing because they're better, but they are now out of production in favor of the 3 series.  Excellent cigar, my cigar of choice.  A little hard to find, but most places that carry them really like them and carry lots of them in all different sizes.

Its basically a more robust tobacco in the first half, and a more mellow tobacco towards the end, so its smoother as it burns down.  Very, very good.  Can pick up a box for $100-$120 if you look around.

The thing with cubans is that tons of cigar companies just take cuban tobacco and cuban wraps, ship it all out to the dominican republic, and roll it up.  Which makes it not technically a cuban.  Castro apparently once said that cuban cigars are so good because they are rolled on the thighs of cuban virgins though, so the real thing might be that much better.

Oh and Master Blends is an Oliva cigar.
