Is photography ruining skiing?

i feel like sense the entire sport of skiing/freskiing is based on photography and video, it has come to a point where everyone wants to jump on the wagon. does it seem like this to anyone else?

sense there are so many kids shooting everything that happens, nothing is underground, and the line between pro and am is so blurred freeskier is struggling to keep up.

if you wanna put it that way then photography/video can ruin every sport.

hell i remember back in the days football was underground, back when i was a little wipper-snapper. then those damn photonographerzz came and now its all blown outta proportion

well, first off i'm just gonna say that not all of us wear gangsta shit :p and some of us completely fail at "keeping it hyphy." but, ignoring that, i totally agree with you.

I read your post kind of quickly so I may have missed the point. I'm not sure if you were arguing against kids out there on the hill shooting or not or that you were making a case that Freeskier magazine was irrelevant because it was only highlighting sponsored atheletes. Any case, here's my feelings on why photography/videography is important to the sport:

Our entire culture is based on images: Cave Drawings, Pictographs, Typography, Photography, Videography. It's a creative means of expressing an idea or documenting an event. Art is the hybrid of both.

Ski Photography & Videography is the hybrid that exists between the athlete and the photographer/filmer. Why?

The athlete sees the jump as a means of expressing a thought of motion, between the muscle and the synapse. The filmer/photographer sees a relationship between a moving object (the skier), the surroundings and the lens. They create a photo/edit as they see it. It's a creative process; an art.

The sport is an industry. It's a hybrid between passion and economy and all the good and bad inbetween. Whether one is underground or not, they're still riding on lifts, skiing on groomed parks (or taking sleds to the BC). Chances are, there was some smart marketing rep that bought a photo, slapped it on a brochure or put a video up on RSN. The kid bought a lift ticket, he or she learned to ski. well.

isnt underground worse than overexposure. In my opinion lessening the gap between pro and am is great for a sport, gives it more of a group kind of feel. as opposed to a sport.

the response to this thread is weird,,,,internet isnt real life and its hard to tell whats what who joking and whos for real,,,but this guy dosent have down snydrom....he was just sharing a point which theres is some truth to,,,,its lame how you all shit on him

i agree that its weird, how evrything gets filmed where as befor there was a lot more stuff youd hear on tha streets as oppose to a webcast on the net,,,,,samething in skating,,,,,,the 90sss and 411 was the shit....as far as skate cultre and media,,,,for skiiing i wouldnt trade the 90s for know unless i could go back with a pair of which ever of the dank rockered skis that are out know,,,,,
