Is photography ruining skiing?

i feel like sense the entire sport of skiing/freskiing is based on photography and video, it has come to a point where everyone wants to jump on the wagon. does it seem like this to anyone else?

sense there are so many kids shooting everything that happens, nothing is underground, and the line between pro and am is so blurred freeskier is struggling to keep up.

without photography and videography we would be nowhere.
underground? why the fuck does everyone think skiing is this secret sport noone knows about. why wouldnt we want publicity to make our sport bigger and bring us more money for sicker equipment and better parks?



the line between pro and am isnt that blury... pros are getting paid to ski, ams are getting flow to ski.

im confused as to what your saying, but if your claiming that there are too many kids who want to shoot pics of everything, then i dont see what the big deal is.
there can be kids who shoot real dope pics and dont have a contract or a job shooting, hence considered amateurs, but can still take a pic or make a great edit
please correct me if im off here

we've all been waiting for the opportunity to shoot and produce our own videos, a thousand dollars can get you enough to make a pro edit, so it is a free for all.

as far as pros and ams blurring together, the technology is letting you see who should really be in the pro spotlight, any skier out there working hard to put something together deserves some respect for whatever they do, thats why everyone posts there edit, cuz it wasnt easy.

i just realized your mentioning of freeskier, and im going to try and hold off on a rant:

the day freeskier starts running am photographers pictures with amskiers, which are just as good as half of the protographers, they may be able to represent the sport in some true light. but the sad fact is, storm mountain or whatever bases there magazine around sponsors buying ads, and if your company doesnt buy ads, then you dont get pictures. thats why every issue has the same skiers doing the same bullshit, in front of the same lens. the mag is paid for before it prints. i personally have been getting it sent to me for 5 years, free with no questions asked, hopefully this rant didnt ruin anything, cuz i do read it.

Sometimes it might seem like "nothing is underground" just because there are so many people putting shots up online. But spend any time on a mountain and you'll realize that 95% of the sickest things ever to happen on skis go down spontaneously and without a cameraman around.

Everyone loves to see shots of themselves and the digital revolution has made that possible. The line between pro and am is still clear to those who know what it looks like, and the broadening spectrum of people producing ski media means new levels of creativity and professionalism as competition increases. Sounds pretty prime to me!

The way I see it, I love that I can share the sport with kids and see their passion for it. We're all skiers and snowboarders and love the mountain and shredding all the same.

You should be thankful for how far the industry has come and that you can enjoy the sport that much more!!

Who cares whether the line between pros and ams is blurred? It's not about the money, or the pros getting the spotlight, or the ams getting the spotlight, or anything!

You are clearly one of the kids that are way too caught up in being underground. Yeah we wear gansta shit, yeah we keep it hyphy, but skiing aint some secret cult that people don't know about. People are starting to take notice and thats a good thing. Did you see Dumont on ESPN, skiing is finally getting the respect it deserves and thats a good thing. Sorry to rant but this is honestly one of the dumbest things ive ever read.

the idea behind it for me is to get so many days in one season, the days I shoot aren't that close together... then I can go ski and have a blast charging stuff most days and shoot some of the good ones.... I hate always having to remind myself I have thousands of dollars worth of shit on my back... somedays I just like to goof. Most NSers like to film and or shoot ( it's fun)...so really you're just bitching to a bunch of asians about rice.

I think photography and video's have brought the sport to new heights.

No one said you had to be all about getting the shot. I ski for myself, and almost everyone I ski with does too. If someone gets what we do on film, cool, if not, who cares.

i see what your saying, and i kindof agree,,,thres that joke how many freeskiers dose it take to change a light bulb,,,,,?,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,2,,,1 to chnage the bulb and 1 to film,,,,,(the jpke works with snowbrding and skating,,,,i find ui even funnier with skateboarding, skateboarders are the worst for that,,,, unnecesary filoming) so ya, there is something inherent about people who love freestyle sliding sports more than anything and filming,,,,,the two go hand in hand,,that being said to many people focus just on that, filming, evrything revolves around getting shots,,,,as if they were pro and had deadlines to make for addsl,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ike they force ther steez, dress up for the camera and stuff, do you what you got to do filming is secondary!!!!, i also feel that a majority of people forget that.

I understand what you are getting at, but I don't really agree.

Yes, everyone and their mothers has a digital camera and thinks they are the shit, it gets frustrating some times but hey you deal with it. Occasionally I have people telling me how to shoot a picture, which as a photographer/artist is quite obnoxious. I think there is a very drastic difference between a person with a camera getting snapshots and a photographer if that makes sense?

Anyways I started with film and art then moved into sports.

I do sports for fun and art for myself.

no way man filming and photography make this sport nicer!! look at other ''ordinary sport'' like hockey or basket, why would you make a basket edit? I think that filming is important to skiing cause it's kind of a unique part that the sport have
