For those that have trouble with religion

Let me add to that trouble. I personally strugle to believe in a God but I have a very arguable point I believe would be worth reading.

Ever since I was little my parents have instilled good moral values in me just like all parents do. This obviously is to make sure I turn out to be a good person and to make good decisions. But I started to question the origin of these so called "morals." Who instilled these morals in our parents? In our parent's parents? And so fourth. When it comes down to it why do we do whats right more often then not if we have no belief and supernatural punishment? When you do something bad or evil you generally feel bad about doing it even if you dont tell anyone about the incident. This guilt we feel stems from what our parents or gaurdians taught us at early ages, but why does an atheist or for that matter anyone who doesnt believe in God feel bad about something if they wont be punished in another life or by an external force?

Im sorry for this rant I just find it an interesting way to look at things. Please dont hate I'm not trying to provoke or hurt anyone.

I believe that “God” is an idea also. We shape “God” into whatever we want or need “it” to be at that point in our life. For atheists and nonbelievers they have chosen to live independently and not lean on this nondescript spirit. For many individuals, they are not strong enough on their own and live their life in pursuit and worship of “God.” This is not a bad thing for their souls are pure and it is always great to be able to rely on something or someone else when going through trials in your life. The idea of an afterlife is just so obscure and differing in every religion that there is not a logical way of sayingg...only this religion is right or only these believers will go to heave – the rest of the world can be sent to hell. Hell in itself is just a scary idea to make the “evil” that is human, stay away from a promiscuous life style...sex, drugs, alcohol. Bummer this doesn't work for a lot of people. They spend their lives feeling as if they are looked down upon by these Christians and their high ideals. Really, Christians (or religious individuals) are just those people who never quite searched themselves enough to come to the conclusion that “God” is what we make of “it.” They are the ones who have chosen this cookie-cutter, non-descript, pre-written set of rules and religion passed down by their parents or their culture. All religions were just made up by someone at some point having a similair moment to what I am have right now. Searching their soul for an answer to lives' questions. They find it easier to believe there is a “God” with silly anecdotes about a baby in a manger, and walking on water...this creates an interesting and believable image which is why these religions have been gobbled up for generations...their entertainment value.

religious-ness is no indicator or good people. i mean, how many little boys have been raped by religious leaders? ironic huh... or if youre into the whole hating terrorists thing, hell america is basically blaming the current wars on radical islam.

i guess what im trying to say is that although religion can encourage good morality, it often causes as much if not more harm than it prevents.

if youre the pope and an asshole, your an asshole. if youre a muslim and an asshole, your an asshole. same with atheits, buddhists, satanists, etc

most muslims dont try to kill western "unbelievers", most christians dont rape children, but if someone does, it has not much to do with his religion.

I can see where you are coming from, but I have to disagree.  I am a Christian and choose to live my life according to the standards God has set.  I choose to do this not out of weakness, but because I see God's hand all over the place.  When I see the beauty of a prarie sunset (I live in Saskatchewan) or experience the majesty of the mountains or think about the complexity of life, I can't help ask myself how there can be any alternative but God.  I promise I'm not trying to turn this into another God vs. no God or evolution vs. creation thread.
If nothing else, if I'm wrong and there is no God/heaven/etc I will have lived a good life but if I end up being right and there is a God/heaven/whatnot, I've gained everything.

the idea of religion forming guilt and such is all wrong.

guilt comes from the simple idea of doing something bad or wrong to someone, then realizing that you wouldn't want that to happen to you.

You're actually using an analogy about "some dude in Compton" capping your ass when talking about altruism? Well, that just made my day. In sum, I do believe that you're argument about "someone" putting morals into us is utter bullshit and I want you to be a troll going for giggles. As for Pascal's wager mentioned here, following the Bible and God doesn't necessarily make your life good. Look at the Crusades, Westboro Baptist Fucks etc. Argh.

I will never claim to know much about the universe and how things in it work, however, I know enough to that it is incredible.  Like I mentioned, I'm not hear to argue all day about creation vs. evolution.  I'm simply stating what I, personally, believe.  I'm not here to shove it down anyone's throat and I certainly don't think less of anyone who doesn't agree.

I suppose I did use Pascal's wager.  I don't want to come across as someone who lives my life by that.  I believe whole-heartedly that God exists and I don't try to be a good person "just in case."  There are enough people in the world who have/are/will, but end up failing miserably in the name of God.  It pisses me off just as much as you guys.

You're basically saying you know the universe is incredible, and you're too lazy/stupid to learn the actual science behind what made it exist, so you just assume God did it.

I'm not saying that.  I've read a bunch here and there and understand to an extent the science behind what allegedly made it exist.  Regardless, I choose to believe God had his hand in it.  You might think that is lazy/stupid/pathetic/whatever and I get that.

I don't base my belief in God on whether or not he created the universe.  I believe the universe was created because I believe in God.
