In Need Of Your Help...

I know many of you don't follow snowboarding, but a very close friend of mine, Cody Rosenthal, is in dire need of any help he can get.

He recently broke his L3 vertebrae on day two of Snowboarder Magazine's Super Park 13. He was flown out of Mammoth Lakes Hospital to Renown Rehabilitation Hospital in Reno, NV. His surgery took place May 10th, and he's now on the road to recovery. If you know Cody, or have any means to support him and his family financially during this very difficult time, it would be greatly appreciated. Like many up and coming talented skiers, snowboarders, and skateboarders, Cody does not have Health Insurance, so any donations are deeply appreciated. Let's get Cody back on the slopes with us...

If he doesn't have health insurance this is probably big enough to make him declare bankruptcy in the end anyway, so is a donation really going to do anything except go to his creditors?

Might as well just run the credit cards up and get the debt going if you are going to be forfeiting all your debt anyway due to a six figure medical bill.

Harsh, but very realistic.  Personally, I would rather see a list of what he will need, rather than just sending money blindly to help.  not to be smart, but would it be more helpful to have like a gift card to Subway, whereby it is assured that that he will be able to eat?

These "help my friend" threads are tough to deal with. I wish they didn't appear here in this forum.

cody is the man. only met him a few times, but the kid is hilarious. I think the only thing anyone could ever say bad about him is he is too fucking good at board sports. probably one of the nastiest skateboarders i have ever seen in person, and he is at snowboard super park so you can obviously appreciate how good he is on a snowboard. get well soon man.

+++++++++++vibes! I definitely recognize the name even though I hardly follow snowboarding. 

As a ski patroller I see stuff like this happen all of the time... people come in with serious injuries, but refuse to go to the hospital for treatment because they don't have insurance.  It really is a terrible situation to be in. You know you don't have the money to pay for medical bills, but you also don't always know if you have a life threatening injury or not.  I can't tell you how many people I've seen strapped to a backboard and we tell them they need to go to the hospital, then they start freaking out (crying, yelling, fighting back).  So, I understand the finnancial struggle he is in now and I feel for him.  I wish I had a job again so that I could donate some money.

I haven't heard of Cody,as I don't follow snowboarders, but I'm sorry to hear about his tragic accident. I'll be praying for him for a complete recovery. God Bless him!

What sucks is thats exactly why our econemy has shit the bed. 

I wish that big hospitals would do manditory and lifethreating surgeries for a discounted rate to thoes in need (sort of a step to universal healthcare).  But the health industry would never do that. Surgens need to make the big money or none of them would ever do their profession and if someone fucked up a free surgery then the Malpractice suit against them would crippel them for trying to be a good person..its bull shit

 +++ vibes I hope everything works out as well as it can.  It is going to be close to a 100,000 recovery without insurance so im sure any bit of help he can get would be HUGE I know im gunna try to scrounge up a few bucks to throw his way

No this is not why the economy shit the bed, at best it is a very poor metaphor for it.

Nearly all ERS will not refuse service to people even if they don't have insurance, if you need life threatening surgery they will preform it. They will just send you to collections if you don't pay, so you have to declare bankruptcy to wipe the slate clean.
