what really is the definition of indie music? I just heard flamming lips is condiered indie and feist is considerd indie. i'll join if i can understand what indie music really is

I love how people stereotype people who listen to musical genres. The same can be said about white kids that listen to rap, or reggae music, or metal. It's all so trivial and based in bullshit.

YOU ARE NOT SUPERIOR BECAUSE YOU LISTEN TO A TYPE OF MUSIC, so stop ragging on others about their musical preference and shut the fuck up.

The OP wants to know who wants to join his cult to discuss about a shared interest. He did not mock someone else's musical preference, so why rag on his?

it started as being short for independent; just unsigned artists doing their own thing.  but a lot has happened since then, and the pixies, sonic youth, dinosaur jr, fugazi, pavement, etc have become synonymous with the origin of indie as a "genre".

these bands have paved the way for all of the indie bands we have now, and instead of just being an adjective used to describe a different band, there is almost a certain sound that 'indie' bands fall into.

ill be honest, ive always hated the word, but it has become necessary to describe certain bands these days.

flaming lips, yes.  feist, not so much, but broken social scene for sure.  devendra banhart, yo la tengo, the shins, neutral milk hotel (though this band, particularly jeff mangum, deserves more credit that just another 'indie' band.  listen to in an aeroplane over the sea all the way through about 10 times and youll know what i mean), etc.  these are bands that have come to represent the 'indie' genre that has blown up recently.

so on that note, i guess ill join this cult!  do i need an invite, because i will gladly take one!

i am still havin a hard time know what bands are indie and which ones arn't because flamming lips dosen't really sound anything like neutral milk hotel. so is it just the chill sounding bands that arn't as mainstream? tell me if these bands are considered indie, modest mouse, postal service/death cab for cutie, cake, animal collective, muse, spoon. idk it seems that indie mabye isn't really its own genre.

thats pretty much the thing though.  indie started as a classification for independent bands that really didnt fall into another category.  there are certain elements that might exist across the board (acoustic guitars, unusual instruments, stripped down recordings) but other that that, the line is very blurred as to what is and what is not considered 'indie'.

there are a lot of subcategories into 'indie' as well, and ive always felt that the existance of the term kind of downplays the significance of what some of these bands are doing.

case in point: the shins first album, oh! inverted world.  in my opinion, one of the best albums of the 2000's thus far, but the persistance on labeling bands as 'indie' has made it just another addition to the annals of 'indie' history. granted they have since blown up and become a bit more mainstream (dont get me wrong, i still love the band), but this first album almost redefined 'stripped down' and let the world know that you can still shred in the process.

ive always though that the term kind of puts down the creativity of these artists by just pinning as indie bands and not focusing on the music so much as the audience who listens to it.
