Your taxes are lower in BC in terms of marginal rates unless you're pretty rich. The highest marginal rate in BC is 43.7% (amounts over 126 thousand) and in Alberta it's 39%. BUT, in BC, you pay 20% on your first 35k of income, 22.7% from 35k to 40k, and 29.7% from 40k to 70k. In AB, you pay 25% on everything all the way up to 40k, and then 32% from 40k to 80k.
I was just surprised to realize this upon calculating how much after tax income I would make in Alberta vs. here since I might go there; salaries in Calgary for my position are 20 grand higher than in Vancouver... but taxes narrow that gap to only 13 grand. Of course, the cost of living is lower there.
