I'm looking for a tripod to use with my nikon d60. I have about a $180 to $200 spending limit and i know thats not gonna get me the best, but it will have to do for now. so what are the best legs and head i can get for the price range? btw, i want a ball head and i'd prefer legs with a high max height considering im 6'3''
personally i'm a fan of manfrotto stuff. i beat the hell out of my gear and everything i have from them holds up extremely well. they are pricy but as with alot of stuff in photography, you get what you pay for. keep your eyes on craigslist for good used stuff too.
don't know much about their stuff, but usually b&h doesn't sell crap gear so you'll most likely be pretty satisfied with your purchase regardless of what you go with.
more importantly just pay attention to the suggest max weight of the tripod legs and head. don't sell yourself short on weight carrying ability, but also there's no need to buy a tripod made to hold up to 40lbs. or something, when you'll only be mounting your dslr on top ya know?
i'm just the type of person who sticks to one brand consistently if it works for me, and i've been nothing but happy with manfrotto stuff so that's why i threw it out there.
thanks a lot man, the reason im not really gonna go with manfrotto is because they dont make a "cheaper" set of legs with a real high max height. id prefer something that works best for me and not just buy solely because of the brand (even tho manfrotto usually is the best). but do you agree that a ball head is probably easiest and best to work with, especially for shooting on the mountain and whatever?
yah no problem, yah a ball head is going to be the easiest to work with in my opinion cause there's less shit to have to constantly adjust. you can just loosen it, rotate it whichever which way you want, and tighten it.
alot of this stuff is personal preference i've found too. it's hard to tell what will work best for you until you use it a fair amount if that makes any sense. i.e. getting a f/2.8 IS telephoto which ways more vs. getting an f/4 IS which weighs less but isn't as fast. or a tripod that has quick release vs knob release. etc.
