Can I Ski in India?

So a couple winters back I went to India for almost half a year to teach english, spent most of my time up in the himilayas near Tibet.  There is a lot of snow there obviously, but no one knew of any way to ski without your own chopper.  So I'm probaby going to have the oppurtunity to go back for a few months next winter or the one after, are there any ski resorts in India at all, or a heli-skiing company?  This time I will have a lot more time to fuck around and do what I want as I won't be in the teaching program, and seeing as I'll miss basically the whole winter it would be awesome to get some lines in to make up for it.

This one is sort of a long shot, I might ask TGR, but I hate all those old guys anyway.

I have a friends who snowboards from India, she said there are resorts but the lifts are just sketchy.

See I definately need to find those resorts.  Sketchy chairs do not worry me.  I rode a ferris wheel there that was being powered by what appeared to be a 70's chevy big block with some belts and pulleys attached.  Any names or general locations?

i am half pakistani, and he said skiing in pakistan was a definite possibility, you just had to know someone with a heli, or have a guide willing to hike with you. apparently he was going to use his pull in the army to get a heli for me and the brothers but pakistan/india kinda went to hell and he wouldnt let us go.

i know thats not super helpful, im just relating that at least in my dads mind he was only really thinking the heli route.

I looked into Gulmarg, that is definatey a prospect.  I was hoping for something further east though, near Nepal and Sikkim, as this is where I have many friends.

My Indian friends say India has some insane skiing.

Go ask in the TGR forums. They may be old guys, but they've also got enough money to afford flying to India. They'll know better than anyone else here. The guy who posted the Gulmarg ski report runs Ski Himalayas. He's an awesome guy and more than happy to answer questions.

Gulmarg, to be exact.

People go there, but everyone I talk to from India tells me to stay the fuck away from that area.

Everyone I talked to in India said there wasn't anywhere to ski, so they can't be that well informed on the subject.  I don't really think skiing is a top priority over there.

If I can't go skiing anywhere I can have a friend get me into the himilayan mountaneering institute on a month long course apparently even though its supposed to be natives onry.

Lots of conflict and violence, moreso in the past though there is some still going on.. though as I said Americans and foreigners DO go there.  Another reason, it's awfully close to Pakistan, namely the mountainous regions of Pakistan... AKA Taliban strongholds.

Too bad too, Gulmarg is one of the treasures of the ski world right now.

Friends of mine spent a month skiing in Kashmir this winter, they loved it. Lots of militia around, but whatever, keeps the tourists away and means more pow for those who do go.
