Need some knowledge about the great depression and FDR

Alright the school year is coming to an end and i hav completely checked out.  I have a speech in the morning and i need help, here is where i need help

I need to argue that President Roosevelts personality and charisma contributed to the end of the Great Depression more than his policy in the New Deal.

Anyone got some good points that i should make, im just fucking dying here trying to think what i should say. By the way im a junior in highschool and its for an AP US History class, but its not worth a whole lot of points and i just want to get through without embarrising myself.

Plus everyones opinion on this is different. Some people say the New Deal extended the length of the depression, other people say it got us out faster and many other thoughts. So it would be best to do your own research and form your own opinion. It will help you prepare for college anyways...

well when the treaty of versailes was made, some of his points in the new deal got denied and thrown out even though they were good ideas...argue that even though he was denied he kept fighting (cant think of a better word) to keep peace?

Here are a few things from my notes-

People were sick of Hoover and he looked and seemed very worn out. He did "to little, to late." Hoover relied on "rugged individualism" where people had to fend for themselves or the local govt needed to take care of them. FDR tried to support people and get them food, and jobs. FRD represented confidence, sympathy, and leadership. FDR also had a very open government and he would regularly talk to people via the radio which really helped them relate. One last thing, hoover didn't like to change his ideas a lot and he "would stay the course" where as FDR was all over the place making changes whenever he thought they were necessary.

Hope that helps some, school sucks and I want summer.

look into parts of the new deal being "un constitutional" and FDR trying to add justices to the bench...

he wasnt some saint in a wheel chair....... o yeah he also threw Japanese people into "internment camps"


but o yeah he was like our best president ever man. o yeah. :P

i always get a little chuckle inside when people on the idiot box like Olbermen and Maddow get up and piss and moan about how Bush tore the constitution, and yet this character was mother terresa, the pope, Ben franklen and george washington all rolled into one. im withholding judgement but im thinking our current administration will most surely be EVEN BETTER than Roosevelt. so that puts him on a whole new level. god maybe?

one of our greatest presidents, but certainly not perfect. the internment camps being a huge problem obviously. and yeah its interesting looking at the parts of the new deal that were struck down, and the justice stacking.

Alright so heres what i have so far

1. im going to open with my thesis saying that roosevelts policy was unsuccessful but his leadership and charisma caried the US into WWII, which was the ultimate cure for the depression. I will also point out how he never achieved his three points as his policy mostly focused on relief (i think the points were releif-recovery-reform).  *maybe relate him to hoover and how they were very different.

2. Ill talk about not only were his policies did not help the economy long term, citing things like all the work programs and the TVA, but also his unconstitutional policies and actions like court packing.

3. Then i will reinforce my theses, talking about his optimism and charisma, citing his fireside chats and how he became a symbol for change.

4.  I will finish off by restating that WWII ended the depression and that he gave people hope and made people feel secure enough to invest again. I should be able to spit a bunch of bullshit to drag it out a bit.
*then maybe relate this to today for bonus points although im not sure how im going to do that.

for point 4 you could say something like, the reason that WWII got us out of the depression was that we started building tons of tanks and planes for the war effort, the car and plane manufacturers suddenly had a ton of business and unemployment went down because they needed workers, suddenly everyone had money so they could pay their loans off, which caused the banks to be able to lend again, stocks went back up and hooray depression over. Then for some bs point be like, obama is trying to do this in present day, although we don't have a WWII to jumpstart the economy, today the wars are dragging our economy down, so instead he is using infrastructure spending/stimulus plan and is hoping to achieve the same success that FDR did. or some bullshit like that.

the great depression was a global economic crisis, and only increased because of the money spent on war, but also because of all the blockades placed on imports/exports. england, asia, usa, couldn't trade. no cotton, no silk, no wool, which is where nylon came into effect.

also i think as for weapons and tanks a lot of the metal used came from women's corsets, which was surprinsingly a lot of material.
but yeah, most of the events causing the us market crash are pretty similar to whats going on now, too much debt, corporation overgrowth and the rich getting richer, the poor getting poorer, but mostly, in effect, the entire world being at war, the consumption dropping, costs rising beyond belief, and money because so high in value it became essentially worthless. i think it also factored in job loss were that some women may have stayed at work in america, and due to downsizing, most people came back from the war without promise of work.
