DSLR shooting HD

Does anyone have a nikon D90 or a canon 500D or Canon 5d Mark II? I'm thinking about picking either the D90 or canon 500D up. Any suggestions?

i have a D90 and love it. nice to be able to let my friends shoot with the auto settings but also has full manual. I havent done much video because my computer is too slow to edit.

Well, you shouldn't buy any of them just because they can shoot in HD...At least that's my opinion. I have a D90 and I think that the video function is pretty crappy, you gotta use manual focus all the time (can work as a favour but it can might aswell screw the clip up), you can't lock the exposure during the shot so the clip will change brightness if the lightsource moves/changes, and the whole rolling shutter thing is just stupid. I read and heard that the canons video is much better than the D90s. But you can get pretty good shots if you're serious and have a tripod and are creative.

I prefer nikon myself, The D90 is a amazing camera for stills and the video is better than nothing, but I don't recomend buying it JUST for the video function.

This. Don't get a nice ass DSLR just so you can shoot HD. You might as well get an HV30 or something and take pictures with that and video stills.

The 5D has way higher resolution (21.1 vs. 12.3)...The video capabilites are pretty much comparable though (not great). The 5D is generally a higher-end camera - full frame sensor and such. It's also much more expensive.

Basically, both do video, but other than that, they are not in the same category. The 50D is pretty much the Canon counterpart to the D90, not the 5D.

and you can get "shaky as hell" footage from just about any camera out there, anywhere from a camera-phone to a sony EX3 or whatever it is, if it was not used well.

I have seen some fine footage from a 5D mkii. NO I would not recomend getting it to use primarily as a video camera, but it is one of the features that is making me lean more towards it then a 1D mk ii as my next camera.

Please go and try to get a decent video with any DSLR.
It's ridiculously hard.
No tripod or stabilizing lens can make up for it's small size and difficulty to hold.

The point is this, buy a decent DSLR and a decent HD camera.
I really doubt that you will be using this to take pro-level photography, so you don't need to drop 3 grand on both.
And if you can't afford both, choose which one you would rather have. Because buying one with the features of both will just leave you disappointed.

Weird, none of those follow shots look anything like 5D shots ive seen, they look way to good to be 5D shots which leads me to believe they are ex1 shots.

If they're shot with a 5D, whoever took the video is damn good.
Extremely steady and everything is in amazing focus.
Which makes it very suspicious.

I could see a lot of the establishing first shots being with the 5D because it looks like its shot through a removable lens (depth of field is very noticable) and i would go ahead and say berman wouldn't shoot skiing with his 5D over his ex1.

I absolutely love my 5dmk2. I did quite a bit of shooting with it without a tripod @ 28mm with IS, and its pretty fucking stable. You really need to get your head out of my ass and not just think for yourself.

it's not borderline impossible as some of you seem to think it is. the quality of footage i've seen from it without a 'ridiculous steadycam rig' is insane. it really blew me away as to how good the quality is, being shot on a dslr, and only further convinces me the 5D mkII is off the charts.

sidenote, no vert. battery grip?!! REALLY canon?!!

fujative have you shot alot of video with yours so far? i'd be stoked to see it if you wanted to post some stuff

after being at a couple spring park shoots this season with the level 1 crew i can say the shots from the 5D will look incredible on the big screen come premiere season, i am really really stoked to see how they come out after everything is put together

fujative do you find the footage you've shot with it to be easily shaky?

50D. Just got one with two lenses for under 1200 (well after getting the remote for timelapses and a couple other random things it was about 1400). Amazing deal, cant beat it. Well i guess it really does depend on what your using it for and your experience. If your going to get into professional photography in the near future then you might want a Full Frame, but if your looking at a d90 then it doesnt look that way.
HUGE thing about the 50d compared to the d90. The d90 cant truly go down to 100 iso. Might want to consider that.

Dude, I am so sick of everyone fighting over cameras all the time.  In the hands of a skilled videographer, anything can be a tool for amazing film making.  If you know what you are doing, how to frame a shot and set your camera up, you can use even basic mom and dad home video cameras to produce some pretty good results.

Just posting this below to illustrate a point.  I didnt shoot it, but it was shot with a DVX100, which is (according to many people) already an outdated camera.  I own a DVX, so maybe I am a tad biased, but when something like this can be done with a camera, I dont see how it can be considered "outdated".  it might not be the easiest way to do it, but if the technology to make something like this becomes availible to everybody, then wheres the artform in it??

There wasnt one.  Read the DVX user thread linked in the info.  Entire thing was shot on 1 DVX100A by one person.

Most of the shots look 35mm to me but they could have just been way back and zoomed in to get a slightly shallower DOF.

Looks sick.  I'm a DVXuser.

i too found it shocking that berman used the mark ii for that... then today me and my friend made a steady cam rig for his ti1 rebel that shoots video and came up with some pretty smooth shots....

did berman hand held do that shit or did he have some sort of rig for it?

Spew shit? Are you kidding me? Any filmer in our industry would go "word he probably shot that on his ex1" i never said he didnt i just then i thought he did. It looks like ex1 footage so thats why i thought it was. Im extremely surprised and impress that he shot alot on his 5d. You my friend are the one getting own because you are an idiot.

I too thought it was filmed with an EX1 until I asked about the steadycam he used and he replied "5D MKII handheld for the followcam shots".

There's so much arguing in these forums about filming.  Everyone go out there and post something up to prove yourself.  Until then GTFO and just go film on your handycams.
