I'd say it is better than competing in weather much, much worse than that picture's weather. So many up-and-comers, or aspiring ones risk way to much in hopes of getting on that one podium, and for what really? The chance of getting free skis? Maybe an internet thread with their name in it. Or maybe to have some leverage to convince their parents to put them in a mountain school, to convince their parents college can wait as they have a ski career to pursue?
I'd take the top of a mountain with a few friends in that weather than the start gate on a windy, cloudy, icey slopesyle course. Hell, I'd take the top of that mountain (if the snow was good) over a sunny slopestyle course too.
Skiing will always be awsome, but we need to look at ourselves in a mirror and get some stuff str8 before we continue.
Reading those old axis made me realize how much dudes like Mike NIck did for the sport in its youth, we need to go back to those ideas and implement them now that we have such a large strong base.
I love you Rowen. I can rarely read a thread for more than a few minutes before I get sick of the immature kids on here trying to cuss eachother out, and I'm 17! Chill out people (kidz!)!!!!!!
If I could give you more karma, I totally would...
Sorry, I have to add to this thought.
On the mountain, there were some kids (12-14year olds?) trying to pick fights with other kids by showing off that they could do 7's and stuff. I hardly saw them getting over the tables, so that was pretty low. The olders guys don't seem to be some dumb, but there's room for improvement. Basically, kids need to chill EVERYWHERE! Go ski, progress, and have fun. If you're gonna pick fights and be an asshole, go join UFC or something...
STOP GIVING SKIERS A BAD REP! We're slowly becoming snowboarders............. ahhhhhhhhhhhh
Kids, marriage, mortgages, economic downturns. The car needs a service, the phone bill is due, there might be a double dissolution election coming up because some politician doesn't like what some other politician is doing and wants to prove that he is the man. Hell, I don't even know what a double dissolution is! The ozone layer is depleting, the rainforests are being raped. My country is in one of the worst droughts it has known and bushfires have claimed the lives of hundreds of people just this past summer. I have 500km to drive on Sunday for a family do and my chiropractor says I'm going to need at least 10 more $50 sessions. My boss is not a happy camper and I'm being paid more than $10,000 less per year than I should be and because of the current financial situation and there is no telling what is going to happen to jobs let alone salaries to pay for it all.....
What's that you say ..... season opens in 3 weeks and I just got new boots...!
Finally! Yay.. Perfect. spot on.. nailed it to a teee... what ever that means.
The only comment that is uhhh.... off, is " We live in an age where everything is about progressing" Yeah I guess, in the grand scheme of things, the last 150 yrs is an "age" I think Rowen would be happier in a cave somewhere.
I wish I could multiple quote. The other really good post in here is the one about bills to pay. So fuckin what, if people want to find a way to pay the bills by doing something they love? Oh, I get it, they then become competitive and you shouldn't do that over something you love?
I might remind everyone of soemthing that I have lived through. There was a time when th fashion fad on the slopes was just nuts and then skiing got played out. Snowboarding came in, things picked up, snowboarding is leveling off and parks are picking up..
no hate, just calling it like i see it
but rowen, you gotta admit, that all the bad things you mentioned (which are bad of course) are side-effects of having more companies, more people in that sport. that equals in better product development, greater product ranges of ski/clothing companies, more events that provide more skiers prize money to make a living out of their sport... more film companies that do the same and help "us" normal skiers to get stoked fall by fall...
i know what you mean, this whole goal of most skiers "to get sponsored in 1/2/5 years" produces problems regarding the social community of our sport. i feel it everyday on the slopes, you hear someone being truly stoked that one of his buddies landed a kang in another resort the last day. and what do people say then? "cool", "good" or a inhonest "sick" and only wishing THEY were the guys landing that kang.
tbh, i guess i am a little like that too... maybe i am jealous of other people that are better than me after skiing for two or three seasons or so, i wish i could do stuff like that, yes, thats true, thats just human nature. i really feel great for my buddies (myself) when they (myself) land a new trick and you can see (feel) the stoke. but i dont like some randomass people somewhere that are cocky about their 8 doubles (have you seen a pro throwing 8 dubs btw?) but cant 180 anything over 30ft.
BOTTOM LINE -----to rowen-------
positive: more companies, more interest, more people and more products in our sport
negativ: jealousy, ego trips and all that stuff, ski for money rather than for fun,...
personal opinion: human nature something that cant be overcome, ever seen a war somewhere in history??? its the same thing, a specific group of people think others dont have the rights/attitude/blabla that they call their own
Sorry you feel that way. Sorry if I come across that way.
BTW- it needs mention. This sites' members are of a median age well into the 20's. Most who are of the older set, do not post. the forums are influenced by a disporportionate number of younger members who do the majority of the posting, that is true.
Hey Papasteeze, I think it was me that mentioned "bills to pay" but I think you missed the point of my rant.. What I wanted to demonstrate was that I'm 30+ years old and with all that other jazz going on it still gets me stoked to know that I have new boots and the Aussie season starts in 3 weeks!
