Can i install a mac os on my windows laptop

i have a mega ballin laptop right now and im running xp.

been looking at film schools and going hey...im gonna need final cut pro aparently.

is it gonna be a problem to install a mac os (i dont even know there names) on my laptop. its a dell if that matters.

i originally thought it wasnt but my friend told me today you cant do that...

because apple makes all of their money by jacking up hardware prices. If you could get the same computer for half the price and install a mac OS, nobody would buy a mac.

Its possibly they call it a Hackentosh. or somthing like that spend some time doing some research. If you are pretty computer savy it is possible. But then again do you want a movie you spend 300 hours editing or more setting on a sketchey hacked operating system?

meh i'l probably dig myself some more holes and just go on a payment plan with it or something.

or try and get it with my student loans. which i cant get before i go to school for two years...

i dunno il figure it out i still have a year.

If your going to film school I HIGHLY recommend not using a laptop of any kind.

To answer your question I bet there are some people out there that could do it but its probably sketch and super hard to do.
What are the specs of your laptop?

need final cut pro for most of them. you can only run that on a mac.

and to dosmedia my laptop right now is running 6gb ram 2.8ghz dual processor. and i am at school and thats all i really remember. but yeah haha. nvidia 7900 graphics card i think. its got a gb of ram to itself (the graphics card)

Yes you can.

Everything has loopholes in which can eventually be beat. It's just the fact of finding someone who can do it as it's far from easy.

If anything I would either stay with your PC and find an alternative. Search around I'm sure there's some low key gems out there.

Or Just go for a price plan on a middle/bottom range mac.

fail to everyone in this thread saying it cant be done


i did it on my shitty old desktop about a year ago and ran tiger... but my computer's processor sucked so much balls that i gave up and now i just use it for storage



also, if you do get osx running on your non-apple hardware, have fun actually getting programs to run. (another problem with my desktop, i couldn't open half the programs i had, including ichat..)

thanks. but like said after you, il probably run into problems running programs and thats kinda important haha.

I'l figure it out. i can do some kind of student loan with my bank or something right away so i might do that to buy one...whatever its still a year away i can figure it out when me and my parents start figuring out costs.

right now im just figuring out where i want to go and what i'l need and what i want to have basicly.

you can a guy in my class just recently did it
our school just recently got new computers and out of the 30 computers we have on Windows XP one is running on Windows 98, two are on Vista and one's on Mac OSX tiger I think. It was pretty cool it only took him like 1 and a half classes to do it

You can run Mac OSX inside of windows through the use of a "virtual machine (VM)", after setting it up you will be able to start your computer into windows run the VM software and open mac osx if it were a program and install mac native programs such as final cut. il look into it some more when im gonna buy. but il probably just buy a mac and sell the laptop i have now. i dont know how much power it takes to run the work around stuff or how reliable it will be and i really need both of those things

I'm just gonna tell you straight up if you're going to film school you're going to need a good computer down the road anyways so might as well get one now

I don't really know what requirements you have, for example it needs to be portable because you're in uni and you move around a lot/need to take it to classes etc. but just keep in mind a desktop is usually better than a laptop considering specs and the fact that desktops are much more unlikely to break somehow than a laptop. Once you get a mac pro or something an need a mobile and more portable option you might want to expand to include a MBP in your setup but till then I think a desktop would be a more viable option.

I would be way to nervous to run something like FCP on a windows modded to be a mac just too sketchy with so much on the line.

I'd actually also reccomend you use a desktop for film / photo / digital art of any kind.
The thing with laptops is that they tend to overheat easier and that slows down performance. They're also easier to damage.

I would get a mac desktop with os x and bootcamp so you can run all your windows shit too. Get a big fuckin monitor (or two even).

oh and to answer the original question, no.

"PC" computers (or comps build to run windows) run on a different type of processor and instruction set.

PC processors run using BIOS (basic input/output system, which run as 16, 32, or 64 bit) while Macs run on a full x86 bit set.

Also, mac's are made to only work with hardware (processor, motherboard, HDD, etc) that are made for apple.

There are emulators that you can download to "crack" os-x to run on a 32 or 64 bit processor, but there are bugs and it's not entirely legal, or efficient.

FAIL TO EVERYONE so far. Yes It can be done. Rather then using project 86 use IDeneb. It works. My friend did it on this Asus eee. It works on both AMD and Intel processors. however it works better with intel.

we all said its possible but its definitely not recommended and probably not a good idea since he's going to be running FCP on it which would be very risky considering the kind of work you are doing. If you were just modding it for a game then when it crashes you're just back a level but when you're editing and it crashes wrong you're fucked there goes an hour of work possibly even the footage too.

if you are running XP you have max 3.75 gb's of ram.  That is XP's limit.  Basically you have 2.25gb's of ram just sitting there doing nothing.  If you hate vista just wait for Windows 7.  THEN you can have all your RAM back.

This is utterly incorrect. These days Macs run on the same processors and the same instruction set as PCs.

You are mixing up many things:

x86 is the instruction set, which is used on all Intel and AMD processors, in all recent Macs and PCs. Why do you think PCs used to be called 286, 386, 486... hence x86.

older G3, G4 and G5 Macs use an IBM processor which has the PowerPC instruction set rather than x86, and even older Macs used a Motorola processor with another instruction set.

16, 32 and 64 bits refers to the size of the memory addresses, integers, and other data units. Windows comes in both 32 and 64-bit versions. Mac OSX comes in 64-bit. All current Intel and AMD processors are capable of running in 64-bits.

You don't need an emulator to run Windows on a Mac and you don't need an emulator to run OSX on a PC. The hardware is the same. Just installing OSX on a PC is a little tricky. There are plenty of guides on the internet on how to do it (just google Hackintosh).

One issue is that Apple uses a small selection of video, audio, WiFi, etc.. chipsets.. and some devices in your PC might not have OSX drivers. However, some PCs are 100% compatible...
