Need help from someone who lives in New Zealand or Australia

All I know is I have two friends who went to school in each of those countries for a year and got absolutely nothing out of it. Besides, New Zealand is so played, you may as well go to Whisss.

Alright, our semesters end in may right?

There semesters start around Jun/July I think and end at the end of October/November.

It gives you enough time to fly there, and chill for a few weeks. You get to have two winters and you could prob ski a good bit early season there. You get a week or two off before finals in October. You can ski then, although its a little late in the season. The great thing about it is you can come back to the states around November for the beginning of our season and not have school until January. you can chill at crested butte and ski for free early season, or buy a pass, work whatever.

So end of July to December. Look at the way the semester is laid out. It's a lot different than ours. It also looks like there's some programs for international students where you can come into the university mid semester...

My sister studied abroad there during their summer and loved it(Now she's getting a second masters at the university of Otago in Dunedin, NZ). She didnt really use some international program or anything. She didn't stay in international student housing. She found a room with a bunch of aussies and met and hung out with them instead of a bunch of other americans and asians. If you study abroad, especially by yourself, I would do it like this.

ATLskier is pretty much spot on there, first semester goes from end of Feb and finishes end of June and second semester starts end of July and finishes end of November (this is all with exams etc in mind)  the second semester is best cos season is at its height around the start of it.

I go to Otago Uni in Dunedin and we have 2 semesters, first starts early march and ends end of june, second starts mid july and end early November. I would definitely recommend Otago if you want a Uni closeish to NZs best skiing and the biggest party town in NZ. PM me if you want any more info.

Thanks for the help that clears things up pretty good. I would imagine that I would take the second semester (starting in july) then do the first semester the next year for my required credits then head home.

Still looking around at Universities though, need to find one with a good geology or physical geography program. I'm more pumped about having real mountains though, I hope I can afford it.

Melbourne uni has a really good geology program same with otago uni. My sister is in geology and has loved the program at both universities.

i studied in Wollongong Au, it's about 60ks south of sydney,  really good time.

i went over for their spring semester and i left right around the 4th of july, classes got out near the end of october, and ended up getting home in the beginning of december (i traveled to NZ for 2 weeks and fiji for a week and a half on my way home)

not sure if you're planing based on their seasons, i know the winter was pretty mild, but the ocean was flipping cold (needed wetsuits to surf). by the end of the semester you could go swiming for a bit.

check out wwoofing : http://www.wwoof.org/ for after semester travel plans, you pay $40 to get a booklet/access to participating wwoof-ers who will provide room and board in exchange for 3-4 hours of work on a farm/garden/etc.... i did this in NZ outside of aukland, ended up pulling weeds and triming hedges for this batshit crazy woman with a buddy of mine, it's supposed to be a way for you to travel around, do some work here or there and move to another spot to do some more work, and can be hit or miss. We ened up staying for a week (planed on being there for two) before she went bsc and kicked us out.


defnintly check out an island nation, (probably on your way home) typically you get a layover in fiji, and you can opt to take some time off there to see the island before getting back on the plane. I ended up doing a bus tour aorund the main island, which took some warming up to. Others just head out to private retreat islands... i think finding the locals in their own environment and engaging with them there was more meaningful than going to some retreat island owned by some resort,  but that was just me.... my favorite place was volivoli where they hooked up some serious diving for super cheep, i paid something like $50 (fijian dollars) for 3 dives and basically completed the scuba certification sans paperwork/video training
