Dude.. In the years I have seen you post,  you are 99% spot on with your posts.   this is the 1% that I feel like loading both barrels on.

I am a parent of a competitor
I am online ~15-20 hours a week
I moderate on one of, if not the largest freeskiing websites.

I never heard once about this program nor was it mentioned at any of the events - that it was one of stops for the Winston Cup Series. Sure it might have been mentioned on freeskier, but there was no fanfare during the season anywhere near or equal to the recent Crowning of a World Champion

Simon knew exactly what he needed to do to get this title.

^ papa, you have to realize that this is the first year that the AFP ranked skiers.  It is bound to be a little controversial and in its first year.  They did a mock points system in the freeskier article, crowining Tanner Hall as the champion.  The AFP is there to try to get some sort of order and athlete ranking internationally.  We have already screwed ourselves out of the Olympics a decade ago when the pro's were too "core" to compete USSA and FIS sanctioned events.  So since for now legitimately we don't have any competition in those events, having a system to get the best skiers to the same events is important.  Most comps don't have the best in the game competing against one another, its a step in the right direction to try to improve the level of competition at events.

- this years winner was not meant to be a big deal
- it was menioned in NS articles last year of the Opens Freeskis Events
- simon, jon and others have been sporting stickers at all the events this year so...
- most pros with a chance to win probably knew
- it can't be perfect

Most importantly by announcing a winner it gets way more media than when it announcing that they have a system for finding a winner.  Everyone on NS would have to wait till the end of NEXT season... so we would forget about it not thinking it is a big deal by not talking about it, as we did.

I hate kids who hate on pro's because they know they will never get sponsored And are jealous and have no life so they resort to making hate threads on people who have a legit talent for a amazing sport. why cant you just lay off and admire the skill these guys have. if you stop posting ill buy you a hooker okay? thanks

Us skiers just need to see that AFP is just a way to rank those who compete all season. AFP isnt ranking the "best" skiier, just the skiier who did the best in the comps that took place. If you're in the ski scene, take what you want from whatever skier out there, and rank them as YOU will. Weather it be Simon Dumont ranked number 1 by AFP, or say.... Pep Fujas for completley blowing your mind with a single edit full of skiing you never thought possible.

people just need to take AFP for what it is. I dont see what the big deal is. We all know thet weigh each contest. And we also all know the skiiers that compete all year vs. the skiiers who dont. so we all should know that when AFP ranking can only be taken for what it is.

Oh I do understand and I can easily visualize a scenario where had this system been more publicized to reach uh... more people, that the reaction could have been..  Whats the World Champion get? Bragging rights?  So I do understand the first year calamities this group must have faced, especially at this time with economic woes that everyone is facing.

For me, a interested observer, I like the system and it will be fun to follow it next season.

I have had time to sleep on this. The only flaw is transparency. I would like to see the proposed event rankings (not athlete) listed well before the season. I say proposed because it will and should change as events get cancelled (USFO SS) or modified - NFO (SS went to big air) or added (Dumont Cup)

Hats off to those who have stepped up voluntarily and formed this group - please keep the faith and ignore the dozen or so posters in the NS forums.


Oh and to answer Ryno's question.   There are many, who if focused on scoring points in all three disciplines, at the qualifying events next year, could take Simon. Everytime I think of one, someone else pops into my head.

Come on dude, simon was just as consistent as it gets this year in all 3 discipline. That's why he won it.

Sure he competed more then the other competitor but still that's what Simon always did, compete a lot to get a lot of good results to make sure he gets his mney and therecognition his sponsors want him. Plus he likes comps a lot I bet.

I'm pretty sure that unless Simon comes up with a new big air trick he wont do as well in big air next season compared to everyone else who got various double corks  to perfection. 

Simon totally deserved it this year but I'd be surprise if he's still in that position next year.


I'd would be great to see the rankings after every event next year  so people can understand what is up and where they can gather points. Thats the biggest improvement they need to make. Let people know what is up before they give out some final rankings atthe end of the season.

i don't think that anything was rigged for simon (or anyone else), but it is a bit odd that competitors are on the board of directors.

wouldn't it be easier to not have people in the competitions on the board? then no one would be able to go all sour grapes and say the fix is in.

is there a specific reason jon, sarah, and simon are on the board? would the afp have made it off of the ground without their support?

it just seems to me that it would be so much easier to say competitors should be off the board until they are done with competing to avoid any possiblity of the perception of conflict of interest, whether the complaints are legitimate or not.

i was so down with this idea when i first heard it but after reading all of this it seems a little sketchy. im not so sure i support it much any more

firstly, alot of people have this all wrong...  the idea came about at the turbo negro party at the euro open two years ago and has since been implemented to fit the needs of the global consensus of competitive skiing.  this does not include big mtn, for if you havent noticed, there is already a world tour and ranking system set.  the afp was not created by dumont or jon, or by most of the names listed as the represenitaves...  most of these guys have far more to do then spend most of their time to commit to this "non-profit" organisation.  they were simply asked for their support, opinions, and contributions to help make this work.  there are many people working hard to make this a positive sitsuation for the competing athletes, the fans, and freestyle skiing in general.  all the haters can go on and hate all they want, EVERYONE is entitled to their own opinion.  but i bet these same hateful dickheads will probably be the first to get on the bandwagon once it comes to their highschool or middleschool, or wherever the fuck their rich parents have their houses.  see it is fun to hate!!  but if you are gonna have an educated opinion, there are people out there that are reading these threads/articles and are listening to try to have the open mind to make things better.  if you want more $$$ to be involved in filming, buy more films and quit downloading them or copying from your friend.  if you want to never see skiing in the olympics or think that we have become too mainstream, dont watch!!  if you are that much of a purist, you wouldn't really care anyways because you dont have the time to bitch cause all the powder you are eating.  so to those who want to see it happen, please express your opinions about how to make it work better.  those who dont, try to be mature enough to state an educated opinion of why there shouldn't be one, and leave it at that...  is it really that hard???  by the way, ask some of the pros if they are for it or not, and see what they say.  the ones that ARE competing are for it, the ones who arent probably dont really give a shit, but at least they are not bitching about it!!!

the idea of AFP is great, considering every sport has some sort of ranking system. every sport with a ranking system that relies on judging is prone to being biased or manipulated to have a certain athlete win. every one of these sports is run by money and sponsors and are subject to being as real as WWF. seriously, if this association were to run the freestyle world it would be ruined.

on the other hand, i believe in NS, and as a community, a ranking system could be made, used, and controlled by the internet population. not some "non for profit" executive marketers that make millions and drive million dollar right offs.

i cant believe freestyle has made it this far. its bound to be destroyed, can someone research the year snowboarding washed out, because we follow their path, and i think its the end.
