Dumont created AFP

im not downing the idea of AFP, which was invented out of thin air by jonaolsson and simon dumont, but its pretty much a crock pot full of shit. like simon didnt get enough publicity this year with his bullshit double fronty, he crowns himself king of our sport. you dont have to agree with me, but AFP needs to be exposed for what it is.

Check the front page if you actually want to call this thread irrelevant, because I'm pretty sure the "famed' AFP has got alot of people asking questions, such as: Who the fuck is AFP and why are they ranking skiers?

The fact that Dumont is a head of this 'well-known' representation of freeskiing, makes it seem kind of biased that he is infact the 'winner' of the overall 'best' freeskier.

Sure, Dumont and Olsson have contributed a huge amount to our sport, but this seems a little too far. I don't think our sport needs to fit the mold like a franchise..

It really seems like a big name, commercialized team sport ranking system, like football or baseball. I don't know. Maybe next year they will set up an organization for trading around sponsored riders based on a points system on who's team does the best in comps this year.

I don't like how bro-like parts of skiing has gotten. I don't even care to watch a bunch of movies any more because it seems so bro'd out.

then you need to get with the times, cuz this shit started a while ago.

and to ^^, i love the sport, and ive put my life in to it, ive never asked for anything back. but when i went to breck to compete in the freeski open last year, AFP took it over, rigged the event, and ruined any chance of up and comers coming out from the "underground"

Sarah Burke - Winningest female freeskier in the world
Trennon Paynter - Coach, member of FIS ski halfpipe advisory board
Mike Douglas - Industry leader, Skier, X-Games commentator
David Ingemie - President, Snowsports Industries of America

The Executive Committee and Board of Directors will decide policy, direction and guidelines for the AFP including the World Wide Rankings system and event level categories.

i care cause there turning skiing into something its not. they really need to point out who the best of the best is? ridiculous. skiing is not a mainstream sport which is a good thing. the ones at the 4frnt of the sport need to keep it that way.

This thread has proven once again that some members of newschoolers.com are the most uninformed idiots on the planet.

The AFP was formed as a way to legitimize and organize freeski competitions. Most other action sports have a similar organization. Simon and Jon DID NOT form the AFP, they simply support it. The AFP is a step in the right direction towards organizing competitions and pushing the International Olympic Committee to accept halfpipe skiing into the Winter Olympics.

I know the snow is gone in most places but please hold off for at least 2-3 more weeks before making what most of us like to call "boredom hate threads."

this is not my first thread about this topic, and the others did indeed get deleted.

i can attest to being at that breck stop where AFP took over. (simon and jon showed up and ran an event they were participating in.)simon won the halfpipe with a fourth run, the rest of the field got three. jon picked the finalists for slope, and that was serious bs. furthermore, i have the freeskier with the article about jon and simon starting the AFP with some crooked marketing millionaires. 

this is not a hate thread, its an information thread. my information is first hand, its up to the reader to figure out what is bullshit and what is not.

Just because not everyone shares the same opinion, that skiing needs more organized competition and needs to be bigger doesnt make us uninformed idiots. Some of us dont want skiing to be main stream and commercialized like snowboarding is now. Maybe you do, thats cool, it doesnt give you the right to talk down. Another thing I cant stand is when people like you say things like "please hold off on the hate threads" or in general anything that is talking down on a group of people. Being an orange name doesn't make you any better than the rest of us.

First off, Dumont DIDN'T create AFP. He is just an athlete who supports it. He may be on the board of Directors, but he isn't the creator or an executive Director. I honestly think it is a really good thing for skiing. It is an even way to rank skiers, and it is going to make selecting riders for invitationals fair. Obviously certain people are more lucky to get to do certain events, but I heard rumor that they are going to use this website as a way of selecting riders for X and Dew, etc, by accumulating the athletes best 3 or 4 results. The sport will never be completely fair, but this is a solid way to try and run everything. It has an enormous amount of support from the riders, and the people behind it are all solid. Chris Schuster is the one putting on X Games and Dew Tour and organizing and everything. Trennon Paynter is coaching Dorey, Riddle, Roz G, and Sarah Burke. Plus X Games head judge. These people aren't trying to turn the sport into FIS or anything. Just my thoughts.

I like the idea of the AFP, but its implementation seems a lil flimsy this year.

Hopefuly next year it will be more well defined from the get go and more legit in terms of conflicting interests...

hmmm.... what?  You just said it would be a fair way to choose riders.... Then said it will never be fair, so what are they trying to say here?  And is it a solid way to try and run "everything" though?  That is yet to be seen, it's the first year of its existence.  Lets not jump to conclusions.  If you're going to, make sure you've got your mat ready!

for sure agree with rogge on this one. those who hate are dumb. who not make the sport seem a bit more legitimate to some powers that be? why would you want to hold the sport you love back? you want your pros to have to work 3 jobs to make a living always? the bigger, more organized the sport gets the more oppertunities arise. shit goes hand in hand. plus it also does give it a better chance at seeming legit enough for the olympics, which i think would be rad!

I second that my man. What's with all the bullshit guys? Simon had consistent results in pipe, slope and big air. They added them up, and he won. Sorry if you don't like him, but that's no reason to suggest that this is some big conspiracy theory and he won because he sits on the board of directors...he won because he skied his ass off this year.

honestly do you guys really think an organization in its first year of implementation and trying to bring legitimacy to the sport of freeskiing would decide to name a biased champion of freeskiing?
we get it you don't like dumont because he isn't underground enough for you rich kids from the hood
but get serious this can only do good things for the sport, we aren't "selling out" we're trying to make it legitimate and even bring something like olympic halfpipe to the sport. put your own bias to the side and think about it for a minute before you make an uninformed and frankly ridiculous arguement

What I meant to say is that it is the "most even" way to rank skiers. And I do think that it will make the selecting of athletes for events easier because it is all based on results, weighted by the event. And the way the events are weighted are: The competition field who is competing, the prize purse, the course, and how much publicity the event generates. And yes, your right it is the 1st year, and there are some kinks. It'll only get better.

No problem. Alright so the way it works is there are three diciplines: slopestyle, pipe, and big air. Within each event they have pinpointed the biggest events of the season. Each event has been weighted as either Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze. Platinum events are the Dew Tours, and X Games. The maximum points that you can get for winning a platinum event is 900 points. Gold is Freestyle.ch, European Open, King of Style, and US Open. The maximum you can win for a gold event is 800 points. There are lots of silver and bronze events, and silvers maximum point value is 650 points, leaving a win at a bronze event counting for 450. After each event they go through the top 10 finishes and award them accordingly. I don't know the exact breakdown between 1st, 2nd, 3rd down to 10th. I like the direction that the AFP could take but I think it is still in it's growing years and needs some kinks worked out.

Also, was Simon the only skier that competed in all 3 events? Props to him for skiing his ass off this year and the talent it takes to compete at that level in multiple events and competitions blows my mind. However, if there was another top 10 or top 20 skier in all 3 categories would the ranking system be completely skewed? If a skier podiumed in two categories but didn't compete in the third, could he get beat by a moderate skier competing in all 3?
-I'm not hating, just questioning the the format used.

The AFP is making the competitive ski circuit exactly that, a circuit. Instead of crazy single events with different judging scales and scoring there will be a set format. This is essentially another step towards getting skiing into the olympics and getting more exposure to grow the sport.

but why rank skiers in the first place. Why point out and say this skier is better than that one. that shouldnt happen. every skier has an individual style, and a diff bag of tricks. skiing isnt a sport with numbers. and never should be.
