Quick question for someone who knows about longboards (wheels)

I am about to buy a new set of wheels for my longboard. before I do this i need to know one thing. Is the rod thing that comes out of the side of the truck which you put the wheel on a universal length? or should i measure and look for the spec on a wheel. the only specs on wheels i could find are; 70mm (i would assume is just the width of the wheel) and 80a (a measurement of how soft the wheel is).
also. I use my long board down pretty steep hils on fairly smooth pavement. I would like it to grip well but also allow for some sliding and drifting at moderate to high speeds. Is 80a fine for what i am looking for or should i go softer? too like 78 or 79
plz help!
+k for anyone who responds with something helpful

yes all the axles are universal length so dont worry about that. and what happens is that the harder the wheel (higher durometer) makes it easier to initiate the slide (begin) but harder to re-lock, while if you have something at a good moderate like 80a then it takes a little more work (and when i say a little i really mean a little dont think its going to make learning to slide tougher) and youll be able to control your slide much better and re grip. i recommend either retro zigzag 70mm 80a's or bizig's which are a bit more expensive, also, orangatang wheels are good too and have a bunch of variety. i think 80a's would be good for you that what i started on. And definetly invest in sliding gloves, theres no way to slide without them plus theyre mad cheap.

Axle lengths are NOT universal...
Example: Bear trucks use mostly 10mm axles... Randal uses 8mm axles... However, the the bearings are what comes in contact with the axle so this will not affect your wheels at all.
As to the durometer question anywhere in the 80a to 83a should be perfect for what you are doing. I would recommend retro zigzags (lemon or lime), either o-tang 4prez, or s9 race formula.
You are going to have fun no matter what you choose... good luck.
