although there are sometimes when helmets dont even do anything, look at all the test. some dont even protect over 30mph. some bern helmets arent even certified, but i still use one
I must say that I agreee 100% on this... everyone should be wearing a helmet all the time when they are skiing. I am a ski patroller/park crew/risk manager at my hill and I have a lot of first hand experience with head injuries. The people who walk in with abrasions on their face, bloody nose, etc. are the people who are wearing helmets. The people who I have to put a neck brace, backboard, oxygen, and send away in an ambulance are the ones without a helmet. Granted helmets don't always save you from getting knocked out or getting a concussion or hurting your neck, but if those people didn't have one on it could have been much worse.
One of the few times I was riding without a helmet this year I was riding switch and looked uphill for half a second and then BAM flew backwards and smoked my head on the hardpack. I thought I had just killed someone... I hit some snowboarder kid who had just fallen over in a shadow in front of me and some how the base of his board was uphill and I hit that. I was lucky I wasn't dead because I hit my head soo hard. Luckily I rode away from it.
Accidents can happen anywhere on the hill no matter how good you are. A few years ago, my brother was putting his skis on after he fell off a rail and he got blindsided by a snowmobile... ended up at the hospital over night with a fractured skull... he wasn't wearing a helmet and is lucky to be alive. We've had some big loses in the ski industry this year and I would hate to see anymore.
So please wear your helmets! /end rant
I 2nd this
can i get a motion
i agree 100 % on this.. you should always wear a helmet, cause it's not always you'r own fault if your head gets hurt.. a friend of mine crashed on a kicker, he was fine untill he went to pick up his skis and a snowboarder landed straight on his head and his helmet completely cracked but it saved his life.
I also think that if pros would wear helmets whenever they ski that it would help affect kids to wear them too, but not only pros also the older kids/adults skiing the park, cause the kids look up to them too. ofcause it's the parents responsibility too, but the parents probably aren't with the kids when they ski the park with their friends, so they can easily just take their helmets off. I always said that i think i tshould be a law to wear a helmet at any mountain, just like wearing a seatbelt when you drive.
on one point i have to say that a pro should def wear protection whenever he is "working". that means film shoots, photo shoots or contests (although helmets are mandatory the most times).
so that you never see a video or a photo of a pro without a helmet. i guess that would do it pretty much.
BUT if theyre just somewhere around, trainin or do something else which is not meant to be public, i dont think we should force them to be a good example all the time.
what i propose is something that gives a lot of people the possibility to get their hands on cheap helmets/helmet tests. there is program for school kids here where they get helmets 50 % off (gov. pays the rest, not the dealers, fabricants). maybe something like this because everyone that wore a helmet once says its "not as bad", "i will never take it off again", bla bla.
tbh, i think a beanie looks better than a helmet, but that does in no way compensate the other disadvantages of not wearing a helmet.
Definately
I didnt start using a helmet till my friend cracked his skull in 3 places with his helmet on in february without he wouldnt be here today.
