Out of curiosity, what are your beliefs on the existence of God?

Please be precise, and try to conform to the following:
1.  Does one exist?
2.  If so, who/what is it?
3.  Said God's moral standards?
4.  Why do you believe in said deity?

Rules to the thread:

You can't separate religion from your life though. Your ideals will usually be related to your religion's ideals.

Dude.

The whole point is that God is defined as the beginning.  What about all-powerful, all-knowing, GOD do you not get?

If God had a beginning, he couldn't be called God, since that would infer that he's not all-powerful.

God just Is.  There is no better answer in my repetiore.

which is why i am of the belief that the person in charge of a country shouldnt have an extreme connection to religion of any kind....  it influences too much of ones belief system and decision making.

A church where I live deals with literally millions of dollars in contributions quarterly. It's usually those churches that show up in closed movie theaters. Great following and involvement, I just don't agree with some of their ideas.

It does. It explains all we know about God's existence. We know He is eternal. He is the beginning. But God is a mystery beyond any human's comprehension, as I stated above.

I would by no means call the church I used to go to a Mega-Church. It wasn't that commercialized, buy a starbucks in between sermons, that you're thinking. But still, don't most churches have missionary budgets.

Anyway. I cam across a very interesting verse in the bible that has me very intrigued as to why people still believe the bible.

Genesis 6:3 Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years."

That means that man can't live longer than 120 years. But yet it has happened. It's god's word, yet it has been proven wrong. What gives?

my point would, be the HUGE argument against the big bang according to religious people, would be that "well what happened before that" and since we dont have an explanation, that by some means disproves it. so then, should not the same logic apply to god? you dont know what happened before him/her/it, so therefore they are disproven?

Genesis is written in the style of a "myth" - the facts/circumstances may not be exactly true, but the basic idea (the faith, the essence of the idea of God) is true. Plus at the time it was written, 120 would have been an extremely long time to live.

how can something not have a beginning?  my life has a beginning and an end...  my injury strewn baseball career had a beginning and an end...  my penis has a beginning and an end.....  it goes against all sorts of logic that something cant have a beginning.

Well, I don't infer that.

Many churches that have any more than a few followers tend to have a budget.  Mine does, but the way we do it is by direct contribution.  We ask some sunday to have a little input cash-wise to give to a missionary.

It's voluntary.

Has it?  Whoo...the oldest is 122 and 164 days.  That's pretty close to 120, give or take.

I never looked at that passage much.  No real opinion.

Then again.  It refered to man back when too.

No no no. Man wrote the bible because god told them what to write. Especially the old testament when there is really no history of that time.

A myth is something man comes up with on his own. The bible is supposed to be god's word.

I don't understand him, neither can you.

Leave it at that.  If God exists, he wouldn't need a beginning point.
He doesn't conform to law, he IS a law unto himself.

The point is, God doesn't need logic to exist.  he's god.

Genesis was not a myth.  The King James Version is mistranslated.

Read the Torah.  It makes things a shit-ton easier to grasp.

I do not agree with that statement.

I say that God is beyond you to grasp.  I say that God is impossible to understand.  Not that it's impossible for him to exist.

You, on the other hand, are being impossible for not just accepting the idea that God just is.
I accept that you think he ISN'T.

But accept that I think he IS.

Haha I keep forgetting that I'm talking to a bunch of atheists. I've gone to a Catholic school for my entire life, so I study Theology pretty extensively. In fact, I have a bunch of atheists in my Theology class. It's kind of like arguing with them.

Anyway, we were just talking about this in class, the whole "myth" thing. A myth is a piece of writing that bears cultural significance a group, in short. The Odyssey would be a myth/epic. So while the details (i.e. the dates, times, facts, the seven days God created the Earth or the Scylla in the Odyssey) may not be true, the cultural significance is. That's how I interpret it. Others, such as many evangelical Christians, interpret it differently.

I mean, you claim that God couldn't have made the universe if he is eternal, I'm saying, who's to tell God what to do?

If he wants to make the world, he will when he feels like it.
If he chooses to use the big bang to do so, okay!

So, the big bang could be real for all I know and care, but I just say that God has to be in the picture to orchestrate the whole thing, otherwise, there couldn't be a decent explanation as to how it all came about otherwise.

Oh, I just remembered, the Big Bang is possibly NOT the correct way of creation either, since according to Eric Lerner (President of Plasma Physics), the Universe is not expanding, as would be necessary if it exploded to begin.

That and why is it that some planets spin clockwise and others counter-clockwise?  if all things were from the same explosion, they'd spin the same way.
