For those that have finished college, do you feel like you were robbed ?

I finished college last year,  and since then I havent found work. I spent a ton of money to go to college worked hard and finished with good grades. But now I cant find work, I called my college to get some help and they have failed to so do. I feel like I have been robbed of 80,000.

its not just me, i have friends that are teachers cant find work, engineers, accounting. no one. we all have these colleges after us for the money we have to pay them.  Yet we dont have the work to pay these schools, and the schools are not trying to help any of us with jobs so we can pay them back.

Unfortunately, most companies are not hiring right now because of the current economic situation. Even companies that are ALWAYS hiring have put a hold on things. Just hang in there man and keep looking...something will turn up eventually.

Or you could always go back to grad school...

You just graduated at a shitty time.  Your going to have to wait it out for a few years till this whole economic situation blows over, but afterwords the economy will be really strong again and you won't have to worry about another economic downturn for like 20 years.

It's unfortunate that you chose a major that offers you nothing more than a degree in common sense. But don't worry, for some reason marketing is a big industry that people believe takes skill and its pretty easy to get a good job if you went to a half way decent school. May I ask where you got your degree from? Di you start looking for a job before you graduated?

This is right on the spot haha. You feel robbed because you realize that marketing didnt actually teach you anything you didnt already know. But yeah, shitty times are to blame, things will pan out, until then become a ski bum, or go back to school and wait it out, maybe law school heh?~

the field is saturated right now.  with many experienced professionals out of work, it is a tough time to break into the industry. your best bet is to get some sort of internship or part time job with a firm that has a good reputation and try and work your way into a full time. shitty, but if you want to break in badly enough, you will find a way.

you could always get a job at those "ground level marketing" companies that are actually just door to door telemarketers. if can handle door to door soliciting, you can sometimes make ok money at it, but they are all giant pyramid schemes, so be careful going in.

did you do campaigns for a course for any local businesses? sometimes even just a small project like that can be a foot in the door.

I've just graduated in marketing as well and only just found work. I've had to take a big step back in terms of income, but i'm with a bigger company so there are certainly long term career prospects which will outweigh the short term cut in $.

It's more about the changing dynamics of society, and the expectations of our generation v. those before us. We are used to having so much choice available, but in the current conditions, that just isn't realistic. Now, you need to take what you can get and run with it.

Marketing is one of those industries which, while any smart company would never completely cut its spending, it is an area where investment will be pulled in (obviously leading to a lower demand for marketing specialists).. It will come good. Products always need to be marketed and companies need people to facilitate that.

THe main thing to note right now (and also in the general corporate world) is that a huge majority of job advertisements are only offered internally to the company. External ads generally happen because of the inability to fill the position internally, or because it needs to be filled very quickly so the recruitment gets outsourced. Basically what I am saying is that you should try to get into a big company doing whatever you can. From that point, do your time in a role for 12 months and then look at the cross functional mobility within, and the internal job market. Your skills will still be important to get any job inline with the company fit they are looking for, so they certainly won't go to waste.

I wouldn't say that I feel robbed - but I also didn't have unrealistic expectations of what a degree would give me. In this day and age, a degree really might just get you an interview and from there then it is up to you.

You should go interview for as many job openings as you can find

and you should try talking to a relative, friend, or friend's parents to see if they could help you get a job where they work.

Just do everything you can, pull every string possible to find a job and hopefully you will find something.

And by the way, what college did you go to?

I don't feel robbed, but that's because I got pretty lucky being able to find a job despite these shitty economic conditions.

I'm a finance major, graduating next thursday. I managed to get a job doing something I've wanted to do once I graduated so trust me I know I'm lucky. I wish I would be making more money right away but I know in a few years I'll be pretty well off and in addition, being a financial advisor will teach me everything I could want to know about how to handle money and my own personal finances.

It sucks not getting a job, because i tried all year and just got my job a month ago, so I know how frustrating and discouraging it is. Just keep trying, that's all you can do. Best of luck man

wow all of that for 40g?! i just finished my freshman year, it costs just about 40g if not a little more, tution is going up next year everything would cost around 43g's

yup, i just found out that my school raised the prices from 28kish, to 33k.

and i cna only take out 5.5k in loans, and my parents an only get a little in loans.

yea shits weak as fuck, we might get 15k in loans, which we gotta pay back. and i get no aid whatsoever.

and our family snt rich by any means, but out of state tuition fucking slays my asshole. at my school we pay by the crdit hour, instate is 130 somethings, out of state is 550 somthing. shit is fucking weak as fuck.

and obtaining instate is nearly impossible now a days.

Just to clear things up... 80k is making it out cheap for anyone who choses to go to many private schools. Once you get a job you should easily be able to pay back that money in ten years even if you become a teacher. Just a thought.

Thats why im just busting my ass and going for either pharmacy or engineering. If Im going to goto school and get raped, might aswell get a degree thats going to pay alot.

Of course you feel like you got robbed, you didn't take much knowledge that either made you a better person or more useful to society out of it.
If you were in it for the money you were in it for the wrong reason in the first place.
Learning should be considered a privilege and enjoyable, not a means to an end.
Obviously it is a means to an end, but that shouldn't be your reason for learning.
Not necessarily directed at the thread creator, just wanted to get that in there.

To everyone complaining about debt, you should've gone to a junior college. My tution cost me $750 a year while I was there and the instructors there were mainly the same ones from your typical 4-year school. I had an econ professor who used to teach at Cal, an international relations professor from uc davis who worked part time at the JC, the list goes on. Granted, this was one of the best junior colleges in the country. However, even now at my 4 year school I still take whatever lower division I have left at the community college I'm dual enrolled with, saves a shit ton of money. Taking lower division classes at an expensive 4-year school nowadays is, in my opinion, borderline retarded.

ha 8p g's isnt that bad at all, my schools pushing 50 grand a year, luckily my dad works there so i only pay room at board, my school has the 9th highest room and board in the country, and it sucks.  I go to Manhattanville and pretty much get raped on price.

College is pretty easy, almost a joke.  I do work one day a week ( a long ass day like from 6 in the afternoon till the next morning) yes i procrastinate like crazy but its when i get my best work done.
And im a double major with 2 thesis, etc. my philosophy is if you don't stress about your work every day you will spend all that energy spend worrying just getting it done.  after 3 years i have learned more by just reading on my own that college has tough me.

College is a 200,000 dollar 4 year party.  80 grand is pretty cheep across the board.  I dont know where you are gointg to school but state school in ny are almost approaching 20 grand a year and dont give much aid.  I couldnt imagine living in a state where state school is 1,500 a year.

I graduate this upcoming spring and am looking at some grad school.  Some mba programs are 80 thousand alone for a single year. 

and to who was talking about paying off debt in 10 year...idk if you have your facts straight.  4 years ago when I was going to the banks with my parents looking for loan info they said if i took a 20 grand a year loan to go to school i would be almost paying 1000 a month untill I was almost 40. And that would be with me contributing 15-30 grand out of pocket a year which was completely out of the question.

If you are questing going to college DONT i repeat DONT do it.  Go to a 2 year trade school.  do a blue collar job, become a plumer electrician, etc.  In 2 years you will make more money that people who spend almost 200.000 grand on a private education make years after graduation

Business Admn, wasn't robbed at all. Anyone taking the arts like hist, soc, psyc, philosiphy (LOL), better have a damn specific plan on what they want to do with their lives and how they want to use that degree. Or you just waited a butt load of money.
