Now, i've had many debates over the topic, i DONT IN ANYWAY WANT TO SEE THE MOVEMENT DECREASE. But i don't think that it is going to grow that much more.. I think it will progress out into the backcountry for maybe 5 years, like What seth is doing, but personally, i think it will stop.. i dont mean,like, not be around, i mean, wont grow anymore... look at the point were at now, its BOOMING and i just think were at about 95% now..
What are your thoughts, you think this will happen?

i understand what you are saying, sorta. pretty much all the tricks are being invented and a switch 900 is now being able to be thrown at any given time, when 3 years ago to see one would be a rarety. now whats left is to perfect style, take tricks to the backcountry, and work on unnatural tricks. i know that now its sort of 'slowed' down, but watching a movie from 4 to 5 years ago will change your perspective on what people are doing now compared to back then.

I think skiing progressed so quickly because we are following the footsteps of snowboarders, who have been steadily progressing for years to get to where they are at. Skiers see boarders do something and then a whole slew of us start to bring the trick to skiing, and it becomes a standard much faster than it did in the snowboarding world.

its not going to plateau. theres too many options. rails, boxes, transfers. look at skateboarding, i know that it is very difficult to compare the two, but many times people have thought that the sport has, or is going to reach its pinnacle. theres so much that can be done. every year there is massive progression. watch last years flicks and compare them with 1242 or RFA. if you are comparing it to what happened with mogul skiing in the 70s and 80s, it's just not the same. those guys weren't exactly focused on innovating, it was more about who could hot dog the fastest. just go watch chricton's segment in RFA, look at the creativityh he will be busting out for as long as he is into it. even JP came out of his burnout phase and has reemerged.

how many people actually have access to back country? not too many. and most ski area's 'extreme' runs are only extremly rocky. Backcountry will not be the future for the majority of the sport. I bet less than 5% of the people on this site have even been real backcountry skiing. For sure it's gona make up most of movies because people are in the terrain parks everyday and want to see some varity. But will big mountain be the future for the sport as we know it? probably not.

I agree with ski flake. However, the sport can always progress, just not to the extremes we have seen over the last couple of years. Maybe the technology changes? Who knows. Keep in mind, like ANYTHING else in the world that has drastically changed it, it could not have even been fathomed just a short time before then. 5 years ago would you have predicted people doing corked out 900 cross tailgrabs over a 130 foot gap jump? Probably not.


We'll have you dead pretty soon.

Skiflake and stryken you two are fucking retarded. bid mountain skiing is skiing and it always will be skiing. just cause you live in the east coast where there is no good terrain doesn't mean it is like that everywhere. In the west we got big steep faces with cliffs. not rock gardens like over there. the backcountry is the future and a lot more people are starting to realize that. people will get tired of the same old park stuff but if they can bring their skills to the big terrain there is a whole new world of skiing out there. also all you park skiers that suck at actually skiing might actually go out and become real skiers that are weel rounded instead of just lame ass park rats.

^That may be, but his point is still true... over here in the west big mount. skiing is what there is, there isn't even a park at my mountain, just a mad amount of steep, deep powder and lots of huge cliffs to drop. lots of days you can find backcountry-like conditions inside the boundares

Hell no I'm not a lame ass park rat. My dad owned a backcountry ski business in Oregon for twenty years. The first time I skied backcountry I was nine. Learning how to use a transciever, dig pits, and look for save zones is how I grew up skiing. Plus I'm a telemarker we don't do so well in the park.

I do hit up the park. That is where I spend about 30% of my time. I can do rails, 180's natural and unnatural, switch 180's, 3's, and I'm working on 5' s switch and regular. So I'm not a hipporit.

I'm not a hypocrite but I am a bad speller. I'm just saying people should try to become more rounded skiers. People who spend all their time in the park are totally missing out and vise versa.

no sport ever stops proressing unless it loses a lot of popularity, any sport thats big with a lot of people doing it will keep progressing, juist because we cant see where its going from here doesnt mean that its going to stop at the horizon

I think as far as the progression goes. There is still so much possible. Taking all the nice tricks into natural terrain. Sure you can do a nine but can you land it in powder. Landing switch off cliffs and doing nice clean looking tricks off cliffs is where it is headed. like Pollard's 180 to switch 3 in the powder. That was the most original and inovative trick I saw this year. and also sage doing unnatural 3's off some pretty big cliffs. more people are going to start doing that stuff. it has a lot of potential to evolve. pollard only hit up like a ten foot cliff. imagine in the future people doing it off say a 30 footer. Just look at all of the big name guys like tanner, cr, pep, and pollard. they all spend a lot of time doing big mountain stuff this year. Pollard pretty much took the year off from being in the park. there is just so much more variety of jumps and landings outside the park. I'm not trying to dis park too much. I'm just saying once you learn a trick then go try it off acliff or a windlip. Natural terrain is where it is at. Just watch I'm sure we will all be amazed at where things can still go from here.

/\good points. but ill have you know that not everybody(east coast) has acess to backcountry skiing so all we got is the park. would you rather ski the icy groomers all day or hit the park??? i think the answer is clear to that one. thats all im really sayin. we are coming from two different viewpoints.
