I had an idea! NS Premium

Is there anyway that if you donated twords the site, besides the bling you yould get after your name, you could get no double pits to chesty before videos, or something like that. I call it NS premium. I would easily be bought out and i am sure there would be more donating if you knew you never had to dear with rollover adds, or thirty second clips before you're videos.

yea it would have to be a per month thing im guessing. And idk if paying... say $5.00 a month, so sixty bucks a year would be worth just the loss of ads. I think a lot of people on here would rather deal with the ads then dish out that kinda cash.

As far as I see it, being a paysite is just not an option. Traffic on the site and popularity of it would likely drop a ton and there would TONS of people who would be super pissed (think NS revolt). As annoying as the ads are, just try to remember that they are helping out the greatest website in the world. Then go and get Firefox and install AdBlock Plus and forget that NS ever had ads.

Problem solved. When you go to watch the video, just click Click for larger image and you can watch the video without the ad. Regardless if it takes longer to load you never have to watch the ad.

I can live with 5 seconds of ads before a few videos. Also I dont even see the page adds, with an add blocker and firefox/chrome. All in all, I dont think I would pay for no ads. I donated my coin back in the day when it meant something.

Like the thread  mentioned it wouldn't turn the site into a paysite, but just offer premium functions to subscribing members...

Think something like IGN who has no ads, extra features, higher video quality and size, exclusive content

i think its a great idea it rewards members who are willing to shell out some cash and therefore helps NS keep running by bringing in extra cash

Right, I understand that. I suppose I should have worded my post a little bit better. I just meant that IMO pretty much any sort of movement towards a paysite is a bad thing. I just feel that NS should remain a free community where you don't need to pay to get extra features. When you join you've got access to everything just like all of the other members do. Because even if you could access some, or even the majority of features, of the site with out paying, it is still restricting some access to the site unless you pay. I can also see this as sort of the first in series of steps that could potentially lead to the demise of NS as we know it now.

And I am with Japanda when it comes to donating, because I also contributed back in the day.

Yeah but there are just some features that cannot be offered for free! There is a reason why youtube is losing so much money, and it's because video hosting is an extremely expensive business! I guarantee though that there are a ton of members on here that pay to use vimeo, so why wouldn't they pay to have the same (if not better) features and hosting than vimeo?

Well when you put it like that, I can definitely see your point, and now I'm kind of hoping something like this (the Vimeo idea) will happen. Might this be a clue to future plans?

Also, I think it would be really good to have a detailed survey regarding the possibility of NS having features that members would need to purchase. That way you guys could see what everyone's views are on the subject. Chances are you guys are already in the midst of making this survey.

I think having NS be a semi-paying site would just seem really wierd.

I understand its going to get very hard without any revenue, but personally the best part of NS is that everyone is on the same level, be it some 10 year old kid named Freeskier540 with 5 posts or Eheath, or even pros like jonaolsson.

I think its a really unique place where the best of the industry can interact with their fans and customers, and I have a feeling if NS started offering exclusive features just for "premium members" people would just leave. Even though I love NS and skiing, I know I wouldn't pay to use NS because I'm broke, I don't have a credit card, and I don't want to have to pay through my parents and explain why I'm spending money on nothing (as they would put it).

I think I can handle the amount of ads on NS for now, although it is starting to piss me off a bit.
I don't mind the banners much but can you PLEASE stop the little links on certain words. Its really fucking annoying when you move your mouse over a thread and 3 little things pop up saying, search for "shit" here! or the best prices for "FKS" here!

i feel like this could possibly lead to a lot of paying members vs non paying member debates. Like with who gets access to what etc, and with the introduction of new features, who would get it and so on.

But then again who knows, maybe it would work flawlessly

IGN premium accounts cost $20 USD per year. I'd pay $50 for NS without ads. I don't think paying for NS without ads would cause any greater rift in the NS community than paying for the contributor's forum causes.

I feel like it would just be another division between the members.  There are already different colors of names, non-donors vs. donors vs. higher level donors, etc.  It would just become one more status quo, like karma. 

"You're not a true NSer if you're not premium," would probably become common.  Personally, I'm fine with the ads because even though they annoy me, I can get through knowing that 1) a cool vid is coming up, and 2) that they're paying for our improved NS.

I vote nay.

I personally think it's a horrible idea.

You might say $20 a year isn't too much, but for me that would become nearly $40

aside from the money issue, Newschoolers is a community, having to pay to belong would fuck that aspect up.

Why not leave hosting videos to an external site that already does it well (vimeo) and concentrate on the running of the site? it must be costing you heaps to continue to develop your own video system, that money could have been put into another project.

I don't know. I don't have time to list down the reasons why having premium features would kill NS as we know it, but I have a feeling it wouldn't go well

People just need to accept the ads, while NS need to monitor them so that they don't become totally invasive.

I believe most members understand that the ads are a part of running the site and accept them as long as they don't go overkill

As mentioned above, having a pay system would cause a divide between members (similar, but in a much larger way than the donator status does when compared to the non-contributors - I think in many cases, those that don't donate and have a low post count are sometimes seen differently by some members..)

I don't think it is a good idea.
Obviously it may be the only option if the advertising just doesn't work out, but I certainly think it is a last resort.

yeah i just don't really see this working. i mean vimeo has the premium thing, but i think that's different. regardless of how popular ns is, vimeo is still much more popular. that being, people use vimeo to upload like way proffessional vidoes, not saying people on ns don't, but do you really see 14 y.o. kids willing to pay a yearly fee only to get no ads and a few extra things. the reason i say 14 y.o.'s is because that's bacically what our site is made up of.

you may agree or dissagree, just my 2 cents.

to add another point, what website doesnt have adds, especially one that is as interactive as this, i mean you-tube has add's on their users videos, banner adds and an axe commercial dont really hurt your overall experience of the site
