So, this thread will probably get bumped down or trolled all to hell, but i would like to hear others' thoughts. Is Africa a lost cause? Sub-Saharan Africa is a mess of war, starvation, and disease (primarily AIDS). It seems that any help we give to the people is just enough to keep them alive to continue the viscious circle. Any thoughts?

yeah i think they were better off before the white man came but now that we've given them guns their pretty much fucked

and yeah some people might live really poorly and still be happy i totally agree with that,

apparently africa isn't a country. at my school (small school.....really small school) the sophmores had to do a project called Africa, its not a country, because the fucken schmucks thought it was.

dude, noone lives in the desert. well, that's not totally true. Those that live in the actual Sahara live in places that are habitable.

We are humans man, why the fuck would we live somewhere we can't survive?

the problem is that there are now boarders keeping them from relocating as the desert expands.

You know, Africa has everything from desert to wetlands to snow capped (well, not so much snow these days, but still some) mountains to jungle to grasslands... there is way more to that continent than sand and rock.

This is so terribly wrong. Nobody lives off foreign aid except politicians. The average African sees virtually none of the money you send them. Not to mention that the point of foreign aid (on large scale terms) is charitable... they don't have to pay it back. I guess you could call it payback for countless years of colonialism, but it's nowhere close to a fair trade. It is not a lost cause. There's tons of organizations doing great work here. Granted, for every organization doing things well there's ten screwing it up, but it's the developed world's duty to help.

How could the thought of quitting even cross your mind? Since when was it acceptable to "give up" on a whole continent of people? What makes their lives any less worthy of being lived than yours?

On the other hand, Africa is seriously fucked up... this happened less than a week ago about an hour and a half from where I'm living...

Yeah, but events like that in America get glossed over... ie. Thanksgiving, you know where we had a nice dinner with the Indians, too bad we fucked over the Native Americans relatively shortly after, that we really had no reason to declare independence (higher taxes?), OH BUT ITS FOR LIBERTY... we like to gloss over the facts about the US's founding.

Anyway, on Africa... we will see more fighting, but the people in Africa need to find global commerce to be more beneficial than just fighting. The question is, how will this happen? Well, you can stop blank aid checks, that will do something, but ultimately you need solid independent leaders that realize setting up global commerce will benefit them more than fucking up their respective countries.

ive been to africa, South Africa, Zimbabwe (before it was real fucked), and Botswana. It was actually one of the most amaizng trips I had ever taken. The land down there can be beautiful and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. The people are extremely friendly and The wildlife is incredible. Now i know that when you say "lost cause" your mostly referring to east and west africa, and I have only been to the south, but after seeing what I saw I really dont think so. Sure half the continent is pretty fucked, but the other half is beautiful and some parts are thriving.

Me too! Except substitute Zimbabwe for Namibia. People like to generalize, and when most people think Africa, they think Darfur, not say, South Africa. Not like South Africa doesn't have its problems, but its certainly a step in the right direction.

yea i agree dude. like Johannesburg is just like any city in Europe. And theres a lot of white people too. but Africa's not all bad, just the darfur areas and shit
