So two nights ago I saw Ratatat at Terminal 5 in NYC and to anyone who enjoys them and hasn't seen them....... GO!
The night started with this dude name Despot. He wasn't the best to say the least. He's some little-known hiphop artist out of NYC. The man has some pretty nice ryhmes but the entire time he was reading off of a book, which really doesn't flow right at a concert. One of the problems with his part too was the crowd itself was deffiently not a hip-hop oriented crowd. Many were there for one reason.... Ratatat. So while he was doing his thang on stage the crowd wasn't really reacting all that well to it. He tried to do some rediculous aerobics to get the crowd into it, which only made everyone just look at him like hes a tool. Also he sounded like he was fucking trashed, no one wants to hear a trashed 5 foot 7 white ginger rap; I'm sorry.
Next came Kid Cudi, who I had no idea was playing until i got there. Right when he came on he played my favorite song of his Dat New "New". The man had more energy then I have ever seen anyone live. He's also one funny mother fucker. After that he played a mix of his mixtape. Of course he played Day N' Night. When this came on you heard people from all around you saying, "Oh shit, he made that song". The entire time during this the man was drinking heinikens like it was his job, busting out some Cleveland dance moves, and busting jokes. The crowds reaction was much better then Despot, but they were still half-assed. Many of them didn't know who he was; and when he asked the crowd; "So who here even know so I am?" Probably a 1/4 of the audience cheered. He played a quick set, probably 30-45 minutes, the crowd was getting antsy for some Ratatat.
And now the Concert starts!
Ratatat came on at about 9:00. I'm not entirely sure what song they played first, but I can tell you it got the crowd moving. In about 10 seconds the crowd went from a stand still to one giant pit full of people jumping up and down, throwing thier arms in the air, and bobbing thier head. Also at this point I think smelled 10 diffrent strains of buds going around (one was mine = )). Some of the highlights were Loud Pipes, Shempi, Wildcat, and Lex. The ultimate part of the concert was probably the perfectly synced visuals in the back. Completely mindblowing sober or not. They had one with Chevy Chase playing a saxaphone that was fucking incredable. After they finished up thier playlist they went off stage for a little bit, waiting for thier encore, which they got. They played 3 songs, ending with Seventeen Years. Needless to say the place JUMPED OFF when this came on. It was probably one of the most exciting songs ive ever seen played. Also, they did some crazy shit with this prercussion insterment, (Not a bongo but similar) which is almost worth seeing alone.
So in conclusion, next tour when they come around, buy those tickets.
