TECHNICALLY for best results and not killing your machine you should sew knits with an overlock or coverstitch...that being said tho...when there's a will theres a way! i used to sew EVERYTHING by hand. i would buy regular jeans and then turn em inside out, put em on, pin, then cut and sew to make skinny jeans before i could find them in my city...and yeah, by hand. i was pretty persistent tho, i would go over every seam twice and do a straight stitch then an overlock stitch by hand(2x).
i mean also remember everything used to be made by hand so you just need some patience. ya itll take longer...
primarily also in response to the unraveling comment, knits can unravel, but wont cause too much damage to a garment, but usually jersey knits like hoodie and tshirt fabrics can be and are left raw edge(no overlock) on some clothing even in stores. they'll just curl and are quite unlikely to cause an issue after long term use. it's nothing like woven fabrics at all.
