College Choices? Come to USC and ski Mammoth

So I'm on a mission to collect as many freestyle skiers as I can here at USC - University of Southern California.  If you are unsure of where to go, want to ski every weekend, want a great education, and want to be near the beach and sunshine every day - come to USC.

We sent 3 skiers out to the USCSA College Nationals in Colorado this year and won the overall National Championship - CU Boulder definitely brought the talent and skill but they suffered from a few hurt guys and some falls in halfpipe.

We get a house every year in Mammoth for the duration of the season and arrange carpools every week for Weds-Sunday riding.

This year we've just started working on getting some more serious sponsors for the team.  Currently GoPro is sending us cams, which is awesome, and we've just started working on something with FuelTV.  Obviously we aren't the best skiers out there but we're getting full time educations from a top ranked University and getting our stuff out there to a crowd that doesn't usually see this kind of stuff.

That's okay, ski when you want to.  There are no obligations with us... Some guys on our team have class Tuesday & Thursday, ski Friday-Monday and surf on Weds.  Pretty sweet.

USC is private, so it's expensive for everyone i'm pretty sure.

i considered going to USC cause it seems like a dope school in almost every way, but my mom wasn't too stoked on having me at school in south central LA.
this sounds like a sweet deal though!

?? that would be even more reason to go there as apposed to like CU or UU or some school that is actually close to skiing where we all ski at least 5 days a week. whereas at USC it seems its more of a commute to get to the mountain, but at the same time, you have the OCEAN, and socal chicks erywhereeee. seems dope!

SC's in West LA, but same type of neighborhood, haha.
Have a bunch of old friends that go there (not really skiers or anything), and I have been a true fan of USC since I was born, but never actually knew they had a freeski/snowboard club team thing.
Just another reason why USC>UCLA. :)

How about this - USC is private so it has enough money to pay for you to come here if you don't have a lot of money.  Yes, it's expensive, and if you are in the middle class happily enjoying your high school experience with your macbook pro and your own car, you are probably screwed- USC is going to say you're making enough to pay for it.. which may very well be all the money your family makes in a year.  That sucks, yeah.. But if you are on the high spectrum - no problem, and if you are on the low spectrum, they will give you everything.

Each year USC gives me a check for 4,000 dollars after paying my entire tuition - that's what private schools can do for you.  And you don't have to be a rich asshole - you have to be smart, so obviously I'm not talking to everyone out there, but if you're looking for a really great and academically challenging schol but stil want to keep the skiing aspect in your life, this is for you. 

My friend started at UCSB last year and transferred here because it was cheaper for him because of the financial aid they gave him.

i would love to take full on fall semester there, monday tuesday classes in the winter, shred up there wed- sunday like you guys do and then take a few summer courses at the same time. thats really fuckin dope im jealous.

It would be a fun school to go to if they didn't have the largest number of cock suckers per capita rate anywhere in the world.

Why do you guys need sponsors if your parents are dropping 50k a year on your anyway? (Yes, I read your comment about free schooling, you are the outlier).

I would come up and do that rail jam tomorrow, but traffic/getting off work doesn't make it worth while. Are the kids actually going to be good there?

dayumm if only I hadn't fucked up my grades first semester I'd seriously consider transferring out there. No question I'll be living in LA in 3 years though when I graduate. Very stoked about mammoth trips.

if you go to USC, you have to drop "interstate" and replace it with "the".  instead of driving on "I-5", you are now driving on "the 5".  the federal highway administration is currently working on updating signage to reflect local dialect.

1/2 tuition for national merit finalists, so you don't have to be incredibly rich to go there, like it was said above, being smart will do the trick.

i'm definitely checking that out though, it looks like the kind of location i'd love.

that skiing was legit btw

born and raised in So cal my whole life....getting into USC depends on how much your mommy and daddy want to contribute to the school. not true across the whole board but its called the university of spoiled children for a reason, so many rich spoiled brats there.

im an honer student and i want to go west cost for school (im in NY) is it a good place like to be and how good would i have to be to ski with your team im not great but i try plus is it mad expensive for out-staters

yeah I was in the ski club. it was awesome, they have a house you can use as much as you want the entire season, and all the ski club people were great. but I didn't like living in LA (I'm from Oregon), I couldn't handle the heat or the huge city, so I transferred to UBC.

Just because kids with USC either are broke as shit or very rich doesnt mean they arent good, fun people to be around

I'm probably one of the people who Abe is saying who has very nice parents who just drop their fuckin money on my tuition out of pocket...

However, USC is the best balance of a school you could ever ask for and my parents sacrifice is worth it Want greek life? check Want surfing and the beach? check Amazingly beautiful, smart girls? check Best of all do you want a highly regarded education with alumni who will give you a job solely bc you went to USC???????

Our team kicks ass and has gotten bigger each year. The talent flows in more each year. The future is bright for a long time.

FYI USC is near south central, basically downtown near the staples center, whoever said it was in West LA was clearly thinking of UCLA

and please come to the rail jam tomorrow, ill be in the neck brace, and i want to personally see your mind blown when you see kids like sean trotter pretzel your fuckin face

Alright alright - I'll agree, there are a lot of douche bags and rich bitches - but there are those kids at every school.. it's just part of being in college and having new people around you.. But there are also a TON of people from every different background - you can choose who you associate with. 

The coolest part now is that people are starting to see our ski team as it is and looking at us in awe.  A USC football player went up to Chris Farro last week while he was out partying on the row and said 'hey you're the twin that threw the kang flip! so sick!'  People are so stoked on our vids they are posting them as their facebook statuses, etc, so we're getting all these people seeing what we're doing and excited about something new.  Sure it's not new to all of you, but it's really difficult to try to get people to understand us, and that's why sponsors are starting to look at us as if we bring something valuable to the table.

I would love for whoever said all of USC is made up of rich assholes to come talk to every single person on our team and figure out their financial background.. I can't stand people that judge others on their finances as if that makes them a better or worse person, because you belong to the same sort of pool of people that we all do. Even if you are dirt poor, which I highly doubt, that doesn't make you all righteous because you're living the hard life.  Just take it as it is and be thankful for what you have, and what sort of personality you have to offer, then take others as you meet them before judging them.

And yes, Mammoth is 5 hours away - but what we provide is a really great base to get you skiing as much as you want.. I got about 80 days on snow this season, and I'm still skiing until Mammoth closes.. this is with a full time engineering schedule.  You might go to a school that's close but the hardest part is finding people to drive you, get some people out there - here it's all done for you and there's always people going and organizing. 

For those interested - we have all levels on our team - it's just a way to get kids up to the mountains and have a good time.  We help people out that want to start competing or just let you do your own thing.

i have a few questions about usc and mammoth.

how far away is mammoth from usc?

how hard is it to get into usc?

how long does mammoth normally stay open?

and its close to the beach also? or no?

All of that has been answered - but here.
- 5 hour drive on average
- USC is getting more and more selective each year.  I think the admit rate is around 25-30%
Most people I run into were top 5 in their class, had SAT's between 2100-2400 and got between a 3.9 and 4.5 gpa in hs plus all teh extra curricular goodies - lots of class presidents etc.
- Mammoth is usually open until at least June 1st I would say.
- Early morning drives on the 110 to the beach can get you in the water surfing at Manhattan Beach/El Porto in 15 minutes

aren't passes to whistler hella cheap at ubc?

and to the thread creator, how's transportation to the mountain? carpools and stuff? and about how many people are in the club?

yeah don't agree with this at all. its like saying "go to school in New Jersey to ski in Vermont." Google maps say mammoth is 5 hours and 45 minutes drive away from LA and that doesn't even include the awful traffic in and around L.A. You'd be much better off to go to school in colorado or utah.

okay, sorry.  I have only done the drive every weekend in the ski season for the past 4 years. I'm wrong - Google said so. 

I'm not trying to convince people not to go to Colorado or Utah. I would love to be at any one of those places.  I'm just throwing the option out there because a lot of people don't know what we have to offer. And i'm not just offering skiing.. I'm showing the whole package of what you'd expect if you came to USC! stop the hate

We have 120 people on the team this year, about 30 people go up on average each weekend.  The team arranges carpools each week/Christmas break/spring break, etc.

Mammoth just introduced a college pass this past year for $599 bucks, which isn't the cheapest, but it's great for Mammoth's standards.

you could get into USC...you're a smart dude. I don't know if you'd like it all that much though, since you're used to the PNW vibe. I think you'd really like UBC if you like the urban setting of USC.

yeah dude, i talked to a college counselor and she said that i should be able to get into usc, and i'm pretty open right now, just checkin everything out.  proximity to beach and mountains is awesome.  ubc looks legit as well
