everyone tries to get hyphy... but it's obvious they either live on the east coast, or have never heard of mac dre, mistah fab, dj shadow, etc...

For the cool kids MGMT and Passion Pit seem like totally last years stuff, but its just starting to hit it big with the rest of the world. Pop radio is starting to grab 3OH3! and I'm pretty sure that the new LP that Passion pit is releasing in May is gonna be big.

I hope electronica lasts for at least one more year, because its some of the sickest music to ski to.

All i can say is that i hope NS finds a new trend to beat to death soon, we have been stuck on mashups for almost a whole year now, since the jiberish at breck edit. Im just glad that hyphy bullshit ended before the season even started.

Please not mashups.  I've heard so many awful mashups, they just sound bad.  The songs are never in the same tempo so the vocals are cut all over the place so it sounds right but it still doesn't sound right.   Ya maybee you can make the first beat match but every beat after is gonna be off.  God I have a hatred for mashups right now.  that may be because I'm imparied

MGMT are now officially overplayed... but i think their new album (whenever it comes out) is going to piss a bunch of idiots who only know/like Kids and Time to Pretend, because its going to be totally different from Orangular Spectacular, probably with much less mainstream-appeal.


The trend seems to be a bunch of shitty mashups and electronic stuff... nothing special...

i totally agree minus the dancehall..its more like northern reggae/rap/rock (soja, swollen members..etc) one thing i hate about this years music selection...too much auto tunage.

3 MGMT songs are played. Half the people who know MGMT probably dont know any of their songs other than kids, time to pretend and electric feel...

all their songs are sick though and even though theyre played it doesnt mean you cant still like them. theyre still my favorite band (or top 3), despite the fact that everyone loves them now and some of their songs are played out.

I don't know where you live, but the hyphy phenomenon is definitely not poppin' on the ec. Honestly, no one fucks with that shit over here. Thank god. I like some Bay Area hip-hop for sure (Zion I, People Under the Stairs, Hiero, Aceyalone, etc.), but the whole Mac Dre/thizz nation/hyphy movement...just not feeling it.

One of my good friends is from the Bay, and generally, we have similar tastes in music. I had never heard of Mac Dre (this is back in '06), but he was really hyping him up. Like I said, we like a lot of the same music (across the board from weird indie rock, to hip-hop), so I was actually pumped to get turned on to some new shit. I went in with a fully open mind, expecting to be blown away. From the first track he played through the last, I was just not digging it whatsoever. I really don't get the appeal. It comes across to me as gimmicky, goofy, and simplistic. I mean, everyone has different tastes, and I like to think I can appreciate an artist's talent even if their particular style isn't my bag. But, man. Nahhhh cuz. Sorry for the rant, but I sort of took offense to the idea that you're implying that the ec is somehow biting the Bay's shit...in my experience, that shit gets no love over here.

And another thing...why would you lump DJ Shadow in with that group?

Sorry for the dub post, but I'd really like to see Rock N Roll make a big comeback in the coming year. I loved how "Hot Lunch" featured a Velvet Underground tune, "Slamina" I think had a Cream track in there...Witt's segment maybe?, Symm's seg in "Yeah Dude" had a Jethro Tull tune, "Motherland" had Belle and Sebastian, Beck, and Arcade Fire. Loved it.

Some classic rock throwbacks....The Who, Thin Lizzie, T Rex, etc., would be an amazing change of pace. Also, some of the rockish-indie stuff of the past ten years: Comets on Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, M83, Kings of Leon, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and on and on would be the deal.

I didn't mind the electropop/electronica/mash-up fad this year...I enjoy that stuff for sure. I think for the most part, that stuff gives off a really fun vibe....perfect for a ski flick. Case in point: Spong's seg in Motherland featuring a Ratatat track. It just fit the tone perfectly and made me want to shred. If it wasn't obvious...I thought The Motherland had an amaaaaazing sound track.
