Why do we beat tricks to death?

Switch tens are played.  By next season, double flips will be passe.  Why do we take each new sick move we learn and run it into the ground?  Throw an underflip, a floaty truck driver five or a d-spin.  They're still sweet, but since they were overused a few years ago no one wants to throw them anymore.  Some call it progression, I call it fads.  It's annoying and it kills variety.

I miss D-Spins. Someone should tell Jon to go back to throwing those incredibly awesome D7 tails.

And yes, it is fads and trends, and they occurred 10 years ago in the beginning of freeskiing and always will. They occur in every aspect of society as well.

well...what you call "beating a trick to death", is actually "trying to win a competition".

how in the world do you think anyone would ever win over 4 perfectly executed dub 12s with an underflip? are you retarded? do you really think the kids that are able to do doubles would pass up all the money that winning a major comp means, to please you and the rest of the style-beats-spinning crew on NS?

here's how it is: when you ski the park on a regular day, do all the 5s and 7s you want. it's called freestyle skiing for a reason. but dont come complaining when people are trying to make some money, because this sport isnt exactly owerflowing with it.

as much as i dont think this is a big deal, it is nice to see big air comps that play with the rules to encourage a little variety.

Comps are one thing, but take a look at people's movie segments or blogs.  You can tell what year it is by what tricks they are and aren't doing.  It's cool to compare from year to year, but it's stupid to have one set of moves dominate an entire season and then be replaced the next if only for the reason that everyone did them all the time.

Style is alot harder to judge then technicality. It would be be really biased because judges would obviously have different opinions...more so then on technicality.

pretzels, k-feds....we're always jockin. The majority of edits that have been posted this year have been by far the most generic and boring to watch, minus most webisodes and some JOSS vids. oh look, another g-suit doing another cork 7 blunt crowning another flat box, I really want to see more creativity, and not, OMG he has fitted clothes and does nose blocks! Using creative angles, effects, titles, and editing in general. honestly, i enjoy hand gestures, slomos, and afterbang. But if someone has done the exact same thing how do you expect it to be recieved, especially if your imitating with far less talent.

and I see the need to push boundaries in competitions and go bigger,better, etc. but most edits this year have looked like am rail jams and slopestyles slapped next to pop bottles.

In My Opinion obviously. until I post something better I can't complain, but just thought i'd throw it out. ya know, we are kind of the jocks of the snow industry.

i kinda disagree actually. like we see people do something new and cool and we decide to try it, then we find out that its really fun. think about how many people learned pretzels after tom's superunknown, and pretzels are really fun, its something different from the 270 on swap, swap, swap, swap, swap that most people were doing on boxes before. i dont think dubs are a fad either, bc people will just keep adding newer and cooler grabs, and start thowing them unnatural and whatnot. sure we do a lot of the same tricks as one another during the same season, but thats because it looks fun and when we try it, it is fun.

i think it's partly because of newschoolers and other websites like it. since everyone is dropping edits on these sites throughout the season, they are widely viewed and imitated, so tricks can get "played" before the real ski movies even come out in the fall! i think this is part of the reason why it used to feel like there was more diversity of tricks: peeps had to wait longer to see them and learn them, so there was more leeway to do your own thing without being constantly influenced by the continuous stream of content we have today.

I am calling myself out for being a hypocrite...

I personally just think k-feds are one of the most played out rail tricks, I feel like i see one in literally every edit there is, like why not do one of the other combinations of switch ups and spins on and off? Instead of trying to k-fed every rail hittable. that being said, k-feds happen to also be one of the funner switch-up combos on rails, so yes I just contradicted myself.
