im looking to get a decent camera. ive had other shitty digital cameras but i want something better. Because i am a noob idon't know what to get.

any suggestions?

i shoot with a nikon d40 and i love it to death. in the end its all about what brand you want to go for. canon or nikon. people will tell you that they hate/love either one but it really comes down to personal preferance. i have personally never used a canon enough to know if they are better or not. but i love my d40

I have a Canon XS (probably comparable to a Nikon D60) and it's great.  I would recommend going to a store like Best Buy and getting a feel for different cameras, and don't forget about other brands like Pentax, which is frequently overlooked.

i would suggest the d40 it'd be a good camera for a beginner.
go for the d60 if you feel like you have more experience

When you say you want a better camera what exactly do you mean?

do you really want and DSLR or do you just want a higher end P&S or those semi-SLR's you can get like the Nikon Coolpix P90.

if you want a DSLR, Nikon and Canon on entry level are relatively similar, go hold them both and see which one you like better. That being said I shoot Nikon and like it better. My dad had an old Canon SLR I played around with a bit till it broke, but I like Nikon's better. Within the Nikon family, get a D40 or a D60 if you want an entry level DSLR, they are basically the same camera, although the D60 is speced to shoot .5FPS faster than the D40, so if 3 vs 2.5 FPS is a big deal to you get the D60.

WIth what I understand from your post, I don't think you really want a DSLR yet, I think I would recommend looking into some of the semi-SLR camera types like the COOLPIX P90 or something along that line, where it won't be so combersome as a full on DSLR, but you'll still have some control and get some good pictures out of the camera.

Sequences at that speed should never be a deciding factor.  Getting a camera that shoots at those speeds would strictly be a single shot deal.

I was in your shoes like a month ago and i had been looking around and stumbled upon a Fujifilm S100fs

no its not an slr (its a prosumer point and shoot) but its a great camera. The specs on it are pretty good, and you cant really get closer to an SLR without actually getting one. That being said I definitely think you should check it out. I got mine for 700 and it was a completely worthy investment. Look into it and see what you think

the more gear I buy and the nicer it is the more I realize it does not matter at all. Just shoot what you want.

I would suggest if you want an slr you pick either nikon, canon or sony. but then again it does not really matter.

you beat me to it. i dont see the point in that camera, its an slr without the option of a removable lens, everything else is comparable to other DSLRS. Look into Pentax, if you want more info on Pentax pm me, ill save the preachy rant for people who are interested.

well its really that i hate Canon Rebels and whatever the similar Nikon is, i guess the d40. Ive already said all it here https://newschoolers.com/web/forums/readthread/thread_id/447157/, but to summarize entry level cameras such as the Rebel are toys marketed to soccer moms for extra cash. A bit of an over statement but everyone seems so caught up on the Canon name, theyre all the same camera at the lower prices.

i have a sony a-200 w/ stock 18-70 lens. the two negatives i've found are that  the lens isn't of the highest quality and it doesn't perform as well in low light as other DSLRs around the same price usually will. all the pictures in my profile were taken with it, except for the rail crash

if your dedicated, you will do research by yourself, just taking the suggestions on her through a grain of salt, but seriously ask a friend who is a photographer

i have a canon, and dont hate on nikon one bit, cause the D90 is pretty dope, besides that if you do your searcing talk to a camera person, and look around enough you'll find one thats worth it

dont get that fuji slr, thats just a oversized digtal myspace camera for soccer moms and prius drivers.

i got a canon 40D and 28-135 IS USM lens for $870  ( with a 8gb  Extreme 3 CF card) online, and im not saying this is the way to go, but save yourself the time and money and dont get a rebel personally theyre toys, and also skip the D40, just my opinion

Stay away from the canon rebels* and the nikon d40. Sure they're entry level dslr's made for your type of person, but you might as well get something a lil' beefier.

I don't know how much you know about photography, but I went straight to D70s, but mind you I had a pretty solid background with film cameras/processing/technique. It was exactly what i needed then.

*(Rebels sorta... suck. They feel like toys. i wouldnt want to drop one.)

Yes thank you guys, finally im not being hated on for not liking the rebels. Dont get me wrong its defiantly an electronic device capable of taking good images but its really not a serious camera anymore (like when it was when i was first introduced). the Rebels have become perfect for Canon to market to people with money who dont know shit. Sure you can take banger shots with them but when your dropping that much money why by for the brand name. And when your asking on a ski form, no matter what anyone says you dont care about glass, people new to these things are easily influenced and glass isnt as marketable. But go for the rebel if you like, in the end its "to one his own" just try as many out first if you can.

That's a silly statement. Rebels are perfectly good cameras for the intermediate photographer. They have a quality sensor, good electronics, and are capable of doing anything a beginner to intermediate photographer would want them to do. Also, any money you invest in a lens system is money well spent, because you can keep using those lenses if you upgrade to a more serious camera.

Like Billy said, equipment doesn't matter. I still use a Canon 10D, which is pretty damn old in technology terms, and I'm only limited by my own ideas and skills, not the camera. Hell, some of the best photos I have taken recently have been on a decades old yashica rangefinder.

Hell i use i started out with the original xt and now kids just starting out with 40d and a kid i know just bought a mk3, there is no justice but enough about that. There is no problem with starting with a rebel, mine paid for itself with the work i did with it, and taught me great things, its a great piece of equipment and can be picked up for around $250 used no doubt very affordable for starting photographers.

I respectfully disagree. why would I buy into the Pentax system? I put money into the Canon name for all the Canon lenses and available to me. I still shoot with an XTi that I've owned for over a year now, but that's because I've put a lot more money into my lenses. who cares about the camera body?
