Same sex marriage question

i'm doing a short debate paper on gay marriage. I'm not really for or against same sex marriage, i just don't fully understand peoples problem with it. it seems like most gay couples just want the legal documents saying that they are married so that they can get tax deductions and have other benefits. it doesn't really seem like gay couples really care about the traditional side of getting married in a church. all these religious people don't want gays to marry cause the bible says married should be between a man and a woman. so why not just let gays marry for legal reasons and just not let them get married in a church?

cause to the religious hardliners as far as i know from people in my town its an "abomination to God" or something like that.  honestly, and i think most people can agree...  everyone knows at least ONE gay person.  and for the most part, they arent flaming fools like they are represented in family guy and stuff and dont get int your face about it.  the ones that get in people's faces about it are what cause the problems cause they dont know when to shut the fuck up and realize the church will never accept them.

I think it's all about the term marriage: the union of one man and one female.  and that's why the church is against it.  If the government called it a spiritual bond or something like that, it would not be such a big deal.  Of course there will still be religions that condemn the union on homosexuals, but there are some religions that believe we were dropped into a big volcano by aliens, when we die we return to the "Mother ship", and are sent back to earth in capsules that land in the ocean near Florida...

marriage in a church is religious thing, and i don't think any gay people care about the religious side of marriage that much, so the law should be that they can marry legally and whatnot and let religious people keep their church marriages...

however, seeing as I find the whole concept of religion to be ridiculous, i don't think it should have any say in any laws. especially considering that the US constitution calls for a separation of church and state.

The problem is that marriage was originally a religious institution and over time has been adopted by governments. So you have a concept that in many ways crosses the separation of church and state line we hold so dear. On one side the religious argue that marriage is only between a man and women because well we sort of started the whole thing a few thousand years ago so why the hell shouldn’t we be allowed to say what it is. While the other sees it as a limitation on their rights specifically the “pursuit of happiness” which is guaranteed by the constitution. Personally I hate it when homos say we don’t have the same rights because we all do I can marry a women and they can marry a women, I can’t marry a guy and they can’t marry a guy seems pretty equal to me. To be truthful I don’t have a problem with it at all as someone else said I think the solution is to let them join in civil unions that aren’t technically called marriages. Sure some homos will still bitch and some zealots will still bitch but I think we all know that some people of any group are just bitches.

That kid in the video is sad to watch. He has a major problem for sure. I get pissed and annoyed with him but kinda feel sorry for him too.

I don't know if it's legal in Canada or not, and I'm not religious at all, so I don't really know why the issue is such a big deal. The government allows other culture's traditions to be kept alive, and marriage really has almost nothing to do with religion anymore, so they're probably just scared of change like all governments are. Another example would be legalizing weed. Everyone knows it makes sense but nobody in power is doing anything about it.

i dont see y people have a problem with it. it does not afect anyones life and it makes them happy. but i can see y the church's dont like it because it is not tridition and it is not what the bible says is right. i think it should not be a big deal at all people are just stubbron.

The major problem in all of this is the word MARRIAGE. To most people opposed to gay marriage it is because of their religious values defining marriage as between a man and a woman. That is the spiritual side of things and in fact gays can and do have marriage ceremony all the time. The problem is they want the government recognition. So what i think should happen is we re-name the legal side of marriage. We should just simply call them civil unions. Gay or Strait you'll not be married in the eyes of the government but in a civil union and leave to marriage part to the religious side of things.

fuck yeah dude, that's the perfect solution. the only semi-legitimate fuss about gay marriage is based on religion, but why the fuck does it have to go hand-in-hand with laws and such? civil union sounds like a good word, just have any two people allowed to have one, and if you want to do it in church and call it a marriage, by all means do it, but don't bitch about other people's civil unions. +karma for the idea

I think one of the biggest problems I've seen with it is when gay couples demand a minister/pastor/priest to perform the ceremony for them and when said minister/pastor/priest says no the couple claims it is a violation of human rights.  I've seen it happen and it ticks me off.
