Iron with holes?

Just wondering, does it really matter if you wax skiis with an iron that has holes?
Some guy posted a comment on a picture of me waxing skiis with a iron that had holes saying "Man you skiiers never know how to properly wax a surface. You Gotta get a flat iron, no holes!"

if you're waxing for racing, then yeah, you probably want a flat iron with a temperature control, but other than that, it really doesn't matter.

i got a flat iron for free from a garage sale.
anyways, shouldn't matter, just a flat one will let you get a smoother surface right away, so less scraping afterwards. Plus the holes won't get full of wax.

ya its cuz you get unequal temperature distribution of heat over the ski having holes in bottom of the iron. I watched this big long video about it so i won't bore you with the details. basically it doesn't matter if you iron has holes in it unless you are a perfectionist

Just to further reinforce the topic, for park or all-mountain skiing, the holes will not present a problem.

to everyone saying shit about heat distribution, that really doesnt matter at all, the holes in my iron collect wax and the wax "cooks" inside the iron then when you turn the iron back to flat the brown "cooked" wax pours out onto the skis.

thats why holes suck

using a clothing iron could potentially fuck your skis up. a clothing iron can have a temperature variation of up to 30 degrees celcius while a wax specific iron has a temp variation of no more than 3 degrees celcius.

Although true, if you are careful and mindful of what you are doing, you can easily avoid problems. I waxed for years using an ancient clothing iron with no temperature control. It was either on high, or off. Never had a problem and never burned a base or ruined a ski.

When I was 12 my dad had the brilliant idea of waxing my new skis with a metal spoon and a propane torch. He melted the shit out of my base and it was all deformed and somehow the minty black base turned dark blue. I was really stoked on how my new skis could be used to walk up hill.

but just be careful ive used my goodwill iron for 5-6 years... hasnt let me down yet.

If you don't let the iron too long on the base, you will never burn your ski. It's just about being careful

ya you just have to keep moving the iron around. cant leave it on one spot of the base for more than 10 seconds or so.

dont use an iron you already used to wax your skis on your clothes, other than that holes/no holes doesnt matter at all, and unless your a racer, you probably wont notice the difference between all temp wax/hightemp/low temp.     ive waxed with candle wax before and it still works just fine, its all about getting moisture into your base
