Hey guys, I am at school out in michigan right now..live down in puyallup when I'm home for summers. I'm just wondering what your guys' past experiences have been with flying with your skis? Is a soft bag fine? I ski 161s so I'm also wondering if getting a slightly bigger bag (or maybe somewhat larger like 180) is better (?)

I'm just thinking about something like should work well, but want to know what you think:

Is that good for checking on an airline??

When I travel for skiing I used a double ski roller bag and stuffed in all of my clothes around it. I know some airlines dont let you put other shit in besides yourskis though. Id also say unless you are traveling a ton its probably a waste of money to buy a new bag~

alright, thanks! well i don't have a bag right now, so i'm just trying to decide what would be good. Do you think the 165cm Line bag would be just right for some 161 anthems??

You know I cant really tell you, my advice for the surest answer is to either try putting your skis in a friends' shops 165 bag, or call a place that carries that size and ask them if they will try it, dont just let them say "oh ya it will" because you know they are just thinking 165, 161, of course that fits. Either way you might want to consider getting a bigger bag incase you decide to invest in some pow skis? They will undoubtedly be longer than 165~

Go for the biggest bag you can get.  You don't want to limit the ski selection based off your bag.

Bubble wrap the bindings, they're the only parts that could be damaged in transit.

Keep in under 50 lbs... my dakine bag (roller) is 50 lbs with 2 pairs of skis, 2 pairs of boots and 2 pairs of poles.

^^ That comment was inevitable. I've flown to and fro Whistler twice for summer camp years ago. I did the same thing as above. I crammed two pairs of skis and my poles in a cheap $25 Salomon bag. I tied my hoodies and coats around the bindings and added a little padding around the tips with other gear. One thing I did that you might want to consider is strapping or tying your poles to the sides of the skis to keep them rigid and prevent possible bending. But yeah, all that was fine. They will chuck and drop your shit, but don't get too paranoid, a little padding will go a long way.

did the same thing when i flew to montana this year just make sure your bag is under 50 pounds and your good to go...

i worked for an airline for 2 weeks, and threw bags on planes. we tossed normal luggage around really hard, but oversize/weirdly shaped stuff like ski or golf bags would be put on last because those bags dont stack well. so you dont have to worry about having a bunch of heavy luggage on top of your skis.

id say do whats already been suggested. a hard case is a waste of $$.
