Critique my ski photos (dumont cup pics)

hey- so here are some of my favorite pics that i got from last weekend at the dumont cup. havent shot too much skiing so i am looking for some tips.

ps- the angles were limited to just being on the left side of the course with a lift in the way at some places. i would have liked to get different angles but oh well.

some of them are pretty good. I would recommend staying away from the "guy in the sky" picture, because there is no dimension. you don't know where he is, what he's jumping off, or how high above the ground he is.

really sick shots
I agree the "guy in the sky" lacks dimension but that shot of T-Rains (#6?) is awesome

thats a good point i never really thought how much the jump and other things that give the skier context help the shot until you mentioned it. would you agree that its not a strict, do it 100% of the time, rule though? for example, i like the # 6 shot i have and the only thing giving the skier some type of context is the few branches at the bottom.

4 and 6 were my favourite. And i think theyre really good, I know you couldnt get better angles so i understand why some of the shots are the way they are but keep it up for sure.

good work man! the only suggestions i would make are that #1 has way too much going on in the background, it takes away from the shot but thats just my thoughts, and #9 has a bit of a cropping issue. you could include the entire chair lift to show where the skiier is or cut it out entirely, that little piece of the chair is distracting but those are sweet pictures!

#6 is sick! I think u can shoot pictures in the "Guy in the Sky" Style just when u got other pictures of the same location where u see the dimensions.

No, it doesn't follow photo guidelines. I'm not saying you have to, but I hate those shots. Since you have an 18-200, use the dof. Low f-stop, high shutter and something atleast 1/3 of the way in front or behind the subject.

in some of them the skier blends way to much in with the background. Those tend to be the ones with trees in the back

I wouldn't say that you must always show the jump , but if you aren't showing the jump there should be some obvious reason for it, such as an interesting framing going on with some sort of other element that adds to the photo and complements it.

Most everything I've seen in this thread is better than anything you post.

There is no difference between taking pictures and shooting photos.  The terminology has no effect on the final product.  These are photos and pictures, regardless of what your dumbass has to say about it.

Back to the photos, I will agree with staying away from the guy in the ski type photo and the sequence seems a bit slow, but there isn't much you could have done about that.  Given the lighting conditions, these are pretty solid, slightly repetitive though.  You blew some highlights in the clouds, but since you were shooting natty light, you had little control over something like that.  If you're so inclined, you could drop a couple g's on a ranger to avoid that.

I have to disagree, taking a picture requires no skill at all, push that little button down half way, let the camera figure out exposure and focus and you got a descant image. Now taking a compelling photograph on the other hand takes much more skill and thought.

I agree with who ever posted you dont take photos you take pictures, but its not bad you just need to develop your eye more. Whenever im shooting i try and think how can turn this picture into a photo.

To the op dont try and have a rule for what should be in the frame. Besides the trick what makes any guy in the sky photo different from another. Just think critically when you shooting about everything you are seeing through the view finder like is the chair lift nessesarry in #9 or would #3 look better if you stepped to right a couple steps so the filmers would not be in the back.

Just have a goal for each shot and keep practicing, it all takes time.

I'm going to disagree with you again.

You're basing your entire distinction off being able to use a meter and setting up manual exposure.  A lot of times when I don't want to hit the streets with my F5, 500C/M, or D2H (yeah, I'm claiming the fuck out of my bodies) I will grab a point and shoot.  Do these photographs (or pictures according to asian allen because I probably suck in his eyes) have any less merit because I couldn't necessarily control f stop or shutter speed?  Does this mean I put any less thought into my photographs?

 I should have been more clear, the functional part of making the camera work is part of it but its also the composition and the thought process that goes into making the photo. So because its not just how well you can expose but how you view the seen and show what you think is important it doesnt matter what camera your using. Its about how you take what your eyes are seeing in front of you, picking out the essential part, and then conveying that in an image. on the other hand finding a cool subject and taking one shot with auto settings is taking  a picture. It does not show how you view the scene different from the way i may have.

So taking a picture=recording cool places youv been, taking a photograph= shows the way feel about the cool places youv been because of the required thought process (exposure, composition, angle, etc.)

So everyone has to shoot with a 4x5 with movements then?  Seeing as you're not going to be controlling perspective with a Rebel, that would be an uncontrolled aspect.

And that is why it makes you a better photographer when you can get the results from a P&S that some people can get with an slr. This is a stupid argument. It's all a matter of opinion.

you dont have to be a "photographer" to go out and take a solid and/or meaningful photo, that is just ignorant to say.

anyone can go out with any camera and take a PHOTOGRAPH!
