If america legalized and taxed drugs could it pay for the recession?

i think it would be a good idea,  the government could be the sole supplier and get all the profit if it wanted to. instead of sending millions of nonviolent drug offenders to jail and that costs like 40,000 dollars a year or something.

There's a bill in the works for San Fran that would legalize marijuana for the city. There would be a 50 dollar tax on an ounce of bud, on top of the price when it's legal.. 150-200 bucks for an O.. they would make bank.. it was 11 million in taxes made on just medical users in cali last year i think.. this is a good theory although much of the population isn't open minded enough to put this in effect in the majority of the country.

I did the calculations last summer to see if we could offset gas prices from $4 to 2 with the money, it wasn't enough but still a nice chunk. There are so many things the money could be used for, but it's wasted locking non-violent pot heads up.

If you tax it, then people will still buy it illegally because it will be much cheaper. Then you will still have crime caused by people trying to get drug money.

But the government still wouldn't be the sole provider. Legalizing it would defnitely save money because cops wouldn't be wasting our tax money arresting, mirandarizing, booking and incarcerating people. Kids would be doing it everywhere, and the medicinal use of it would sky rocket. But even the DEA can't crack down on all the dealers in the country, and even if they did, people would still import it from other places.

Legalizing would have advantages, but I doubt it will save the economy.

Exactly. It would save money in one area, such as cops cracking down on kids with it, and be put to better use, public parks, public transportation etc...

Who the fuck would want to sell drugs and pay taxes on it? Dealers can make more money in a day that some people get a whole month, and i'm sure no dealer in his right mind would want to contribute to uncle sam's capitalism.

it would prollly work... hell its a fact that the money used in the bailout was illegal drug money that the government confiscated from catching drug dealers.  so that did help us a lil... n the government could still make money if it was cheaper than the dealers price and then that would put the dealers out of business

Someone asked Obama this publically and he said he does not think it would help. So even if he is wrong, he's not going to pursue it. Personally, I think if it was decriminalized then made legal, drug dealers would either go legit by starting a company, still sell it illegally or move on to harder drugs. It could help our money problems but not short term. It would definitely get the people out of jail who don't deserve to be there.

it wouldnt fund the whole thing, maybe a chunk of it. maybe marijuana will eventually be legalized, but for sure no coke, e, acid,  heroin, or anything like that. fox news would spin that shit like crazy.

The problem with your logic is cracking down on drugs DOES make the government money that essentially funds into projects such as public works, parks, etc. When you pay a fine for drug use, where do you think that goes? Some of it goes to prisons (which ultimately gets fed back to more jobs and other things) and some of it provides salaries to police officers. These are government jobs that provide service and ultimately the salary is spent on products which in essence fuels the economy further in the consumer section. While I won't argue that it could be a more efficient process (it could), but money doesn't just disappear

A lot of you guys in here need to realize that money does not disappear. Spending is good for an economy. I can't believe you would even think for a second that legalizing drugs would somehow correct the mishaps of our asinine financial and consumer structure. That is such a small sector of consumption.

Yeah it did, a little bit. However, we are talking about a figure around maybe .5%. What mostly got us out of the depression was the boom in infrastructure and effect/aftermath of ww2. WW2 allowed us to have a productivity capacity unseen before in mechanized nation. Europe was devastated, so all production was imported from the US. This is what mainly boomed our economy and gave us an industrial boost we needed to create jobs, open new businesses, etc.

yes yes very true. i wasnt 100% sure if they coincided. i think that the legalization of cannabis would create lots of jobs and open new businesses, and we wouldnt have to import all of our hempen products anymore...

i still think the government could make the most money if they made themselves the only legal supplier and produced high quality shit to be sold in pharmacies at a better price then the competition. If they kept it illegal for the dealers but made it legal if you bought it from the pharmacy then 100% of the money would go to the government

I dont get why people think legal weed is any different than legal alcohol.  When alcohol was illegal, tons of money was made from bootlegging which is essentially the same as drug dealing.  How often do you hear of people buying moonshine that was smuggled from canada/

hmmm good point. there could easily be conspiracies to get people additing, because could you image how much money you could make off a celeb if you could get them to try an addictive drug? not like dealers already dont try to do that, but the government could do it with alot more ease.

True, the government would get more money, but how do you suppose the government go about at becoming the only dealer? There would still be many people who continue to buy/sell illegally because most people don't want to pay taxes on their bud. I know I wouldn't. Even if the pharmacies carried high end bud, many people would be more comfortable with their own dealer and rather not trust the government.

the government could grow it themselves and out compete the dealers in price. they wouldnt have to tax it. If i could get bangin grass from the pharmacy for 50$ an ounce why would i risk getting arrested going to a dealer.
