I made mine out of old foam sleds and then just duct taped old shoes to them. They work pretty well.

going to africa and tieing elephants to your feet, then having them run throught the jungle

zebras work good too

avoid african babies though

well it depends if he wants them to simulate skis for grabs or for weight in tricks
but weights (for well ski weight) + cardboard (something to grab) = pretty good simulation

ok go find or buy a long sled like 4-5 feet long.  the kind they sell at kroger during the winter. then cut out 2 lengths of the plastic and put your ankle weights on. wa la

take two pool noodles (yes the foam ones) and find the center point of each. around that point carve out an area for a shoe (only like an inch or two deep). Then use packing tape to attach the shoe to the noodle.
and then you have tramp skis, perfect for trying out grabs.
only con is that they are a bit thick, but it is quite easy to trim the bottom
they are also very light

if you have an old pair of skis you could rip the metal edges off and then sand the side so its round and smooth
