If NS is CRAP...what can we do to fix it?

Lately we have been seeing a ton of threads popping up complaining that the forums have gone to hell, and most of us agree. The question is how do we make you guys happy. We walk a fine line in the moderation world with our decisions of what is funny -> dumb -> annoying -> utter crap. Where do we draw the lines and what would you like to see deleted/left alone.

This site is here for you guys and girls so we are always open to suggestions, just please give us something to work with. Remember you can always message any of the Green or Red names and let us know if there's something you see we may have missed, we can't be everywhere.

So fire away with suggestions and comments here (without the need for a dozen threads) and we'll see what we can do.

And the Ads dont really bother me much except when they inhibit me from using features on the site.

Could you guys set up a newb guide ( If this has already been done or talked over sorry)

For instance when I joined before christmas, it was like a month or two before I really started posting because of the abuse on the forums directed at newbs. After my first thread I didnt make another for a while because of the responses i got.

 I realise now tht its annoying to get the same threads over an over posted by newbs. But endless hating on newbs is like shouting at children -  due to the fact they dont know any better.

IF there was a Newb guide explaining what the searchbar does,what questions and treads are common, trick tip guide (no more endless discussions on bio and mistys in ski gabber), why should you go to a Bootfitters etc etc (there's lots more examples) i no there is already sticky threads but what about as soon as they register as a member they have an email, with everything in it together.

then hopefully newbs would have been schooled on the wrights and wrongs of newschoolers (did you see what i did there) :)

Why don't you write and submit a newb guide? An experienced user who has no life (like most of us) won't know where the confusing parts are.

make a button at the top of each thread that you can click and it will automanticly send an email to a mod telling them that the thread is crap and should be deleted

Fucking ads.

Cool NS needs money and ads are fine and a great way for ns to get it.

Annoying ass ads that pop up and cover 75 percent of the screen are fucking over kill.

Half the time I think about coming on here I don't cause I get pissed off so I dont come on here nearly as much as I would. I know one day I'm gonna come on here and see like a million and a half more ads that force my participation and that will be the last straw. I dont want to waste my time clicking Xs to close an ad only to get taken to the ads site.

i totally agree about the sexism bit, whenever any girls posts or makes a thread all the guys give us all shit about asking a question or something like that. Although i know theres not many girls,  there should be a forum just for girls only. or is there already one besides cults?

I'd like to see a 404 filter. When a user posts a link or pic, the link is checked to verify that it exists. If it doesn't, it warns the user and asks them to verify the link.

Lots of people love some threads/users while others hate them. It'd be nice to have some posts load minimized when reading a thread. e.g. I don't like MacMahoon. Whenever I go to a thread that's got a post of his in it, his post shows up minimized. I have to click his post for the message to expand and be read. It's what Digg does when posts are dugg down below a certain threshold.

What if you could pick out your region. This way you could go right to your state's forum when you clicked on regionals. I don't like clicking regionals, and then scrolling down to Washington.

one major problem that i have is that i actually use the searchbar, but every single thread that is about what i am looking for only has responses "searchbar noob". i was looking up info on the marker griffon and a majority of the threads had that response.  This is why these repete threads need to be deleted, because they jsut clutter up the searchbar, and then no info is found, and boom you have the 300th "how do fulltilts fit" thread.  also, people really need to read the stickies for threads such as boot fitting.  someone should make a thread just explaining every single ski and one for every binding and get it stickied. that would take a while. wow i wrote alot.

Also, I think there should be a searchbar for the cult forums.  It would be very usefull in the trick tip, ladies men, and sticker cults.

in junior high we would buy cans of the spray and blow them up in the change room. i always hated the smell of that change room.

yeah how about not having doable pits to chesty before every single video. It also gets annoying when you finish a video, go back to a part in the middle to rewatch a trick or something and have to watch another 30 second add.

no, the pictures in the sigs would clutter so much. I know forums where the allow pictures in sigs, and it is so clutterd, i have a hard time finding where one post starts and ends etc.

and make a rule for people to post a price of theor shit when they post in b/s/t, the usless posts of people asking for prices clutter the threads

it's killing the video section, why are people going to upload to a site that has 30 second ads before every video when there are so many other sites that will upload in just as good of quality

Stop bitching about ads people. I dont care if you get a pop-up ad that takes up your whole goddamn screen. It takes you less then 5 seconds to kill that type ad (at least you can close them and not have to sit through it all).

The site now uses a metric fuckload of bandwidth to host all the forums, videos and pictures and that shit isn't free. Pauls time maintaining and upgrading the site isn't free either. Same goes with Doug. Plus you guys want HD capibilities and higher storage limits...GIMMIE GIMMIE GIMMIE. Learn to give and take people!

When you watch a tv show or a hockey/baseball/basketball game you get bombarded with 100x more advertising. Hell, most TV shows put 1 minutes of advertising in for every 2 minutes of programming. Radio advertising functions in much the same way as do newspapers and print (most of the print media is advertising these days).

Stop fucking bitching about a 100pixel by 400 pixel ad on the site you visit every day FOR FREE. It could be a lot fucking worse!

With that being said, I do agree the method of advertising delivery in the video section needs to be retooled slightly and I do believe the guys are working on retooling it.

What you need is a bunch of different ads (10? 20?) and play one before each video sorta at random, but do something so that no one has to watch an ad twice til they've watched all of them once (I believe this can be accomplished with a cookie?  Don't know for sure.)

yeah, definitely, i know it's been said before, but i have no problem with the ads, i don't mind watching the axe commercial, all i do is mute it and open a new tab while it's playing. but it does get annoying for every single video-maybe you guys could make the ads more random like every 3rd video you watch there's an ad..?

cause i'll admit, unless the video is top rated or super good, i rarely watch ns hosted videos anymore, + they take a while to load, compared to vimeo.

while the irony of the matter is that i am currently sitting in the kitchen, i do not find any kind of sexism that i have experienced on this site remotely amusing. and i know believe me, i've been warned. but seriously.
it's not the kitchen jokes either. people are really aggressive and need to calm down! debates turn into name calling.

i think a okay-good idea might be to require sellers to list a price for their products. It drives me crazy when I look at a thread and there are 20 replys say "how much." And then it pisses me off even more when the sellers reply back saying "offer." Well sometimes i have no clue how much they are worth, and if the seller knows in the ballpark area how much he wants for his shit. In other forums that im in there is a rule that you have to post a price. None of their threads are cluttered.

lots of the forums like epic ski have this kinda stuff, but to get forums like that, you would have to go to forums that take you away from the main NS site, and i think the best part of these forums is that they are integrated right into the whole site. so dont change that!
