If NS is CRAP...what can we do to fix it?

Lately we have been seeing a ton of threads popping up complaining that the forums have gone to hell, and most of us agree. The question is how do we make you guys happy. We walk a fine line in the moderation world with our decisions of what is funny -> dumb -> annoying -> utter crap. Where do we draw the lines and what would you like to see deleted/left alone.

This site is here for you guys and girls so we are always open to suggestions, just please give us something to work with. Remember you can always message any of the Green or Red names and let us know if there's something you see we may have missed, we can't be everywhere.

So fire away with suggestions and comments here (without the need for a dozen threads) and we'll see what we can do.

Thread karma. 
Instead of just a karma system which doesn't seem to affect many people.  Do a thread karma/rating system.  Here is an example situation:
Troll makes a stupid thread
At the top of the thread, there is a thumbs up or thumbs down rating system like youtube has for video comments. 
When enough people hit the thumbs down button, it sends a message to a mod with a link to the thread.  Mod checks out the thread and determines whether it needs to be deleted and if the user needs to be banned. 
That seems like it works to me. If enough people rate it low enough.
 It just totally deletes the thread before a mod has gotten around to it. 
It will also be a way for people to not have to post something like: "mods ban this person!"
People will just simply click thumbs down and won't reply.  That way the troll isn't being "fed" in any way.

Exactly.  It is a great system.  Except for that. 
Maybe a button up top that you can click.  The thread is sent to a mod and they choose to delete it at their discretion?  If someone begins clicking that all the time, they get banned.  Seems like that would be better but I'm sure there would be problems with that system too.

Messaging a mod is really easy.  I messaged Silence about a dumb thread and he deleted it pretty quick.

You don't get $ signs from buying items from the store except contributor status. That is how you get the sign. It usually takes 1-2 business days to get. Hope that helped.

buffering for videos on ns tends to run slower than any other site. i can get an HD video to buffer on vimeo faster than a standard one on here. now granted im sure some of that has to do with server capacity and whatnot, but id like to see that stepped up

and I have adblocker simply because the ads got ridiculous so you can probably shut the hell up..

yes to bringing back quick chat as well. i wasnt here when it was here, but that would be nice.


also, and i dont really know what to do with it instead, but the NS store is just awkward to navigate i find. maybe thats just me, but it kinda lacks flow and whatnot, i think a redesign would be much deserved there.


oh, and a cult searchbar would be raaaaaad.

Batch uploading for photos.

It sucks to have to upload every photo on its own. Given how slow NS can be for uploading the file, if you have say 15-30 photos it could take you an hour to upload and tag all of them.
There needs to be some way to select a bunch of files when uploading them, similar to facebook, flickr, or other websites where you can upload photos.

aside from NSG, i'm cool with NS. but sometimes you see the stupidest shit in NSG, people trolling, or making threads with the exact same topic as two other threads that are still on the first page (4/20 at CU, Danny Macaskill, etc.)
how hard is it to use the advanced searchbar? how hard is it to check the first couple of pages to see if a similar thread is still alive?
the pointless threads as well. there is no reason anybody should make a whole thread just to tell a joke (especially since most of them aren't even funny).
and fucking pokemon battles. i thought that i'd never see pokemon again after i left elementary school. then i went to 4chan. then it showed up on NS. i hate opening a thread just to find a bunch of pokemon pictures. that's fucking lame. if i was a mod (ha, ha) i would ban anybody who started or joined in on a pokemon battle on NS. people who want to do stupid shit like that should go to /b/.

unfortunately this is a side-effect of the lax moderating policies here. I'm all for promoting free discussion and a relaxed atmosphere, but the forums have become a breeding ground for the internet idiocy that has emerged over the past 10 years.

It's hard to heavily regulate a forum that encourages free discussion without members crying 1984!

But I do think there are certain things the mods must keep an eye on. Mods should try to ensure threads stay on topic, and when a thread veers off-topic into a Pokemon battle (for example), the mods should clean the thread up and warn participants by posting in the thread.

dude you are just a fucking idiot, the ads keep the site going. Look at the coverage from JOSS, it was fucking sick, things like that require money. The site is free to use, the videos, photos, and stories are also free. Who cares if theres a lot of ads (even though most of them can be avoided by installing the software I mentioned earlier) the site is fucking free. If you don't want ads you should either a) start paying a membership fee or b) find a better skiing website with less ads like the other "99%" of sites you visit. You are both lazy and unintellegent. Install the fucking software and you might just realize how little of an argument you have.

god kid do you not know how to read.. I clearly said I use ad blocker so you should probably stop on your little rant, seeing as no one really cares. Kinda fishy that much larger sites who have larger serves, post more updates, pay a staff, and put out more to more people don't have as many ads. Its simple - get better paying ads and cut out the fucking classmates or credit report ads no one here cares about.

Oh and just to let you know, there is a third option which you've purposely ignored. C Donating.

Have threads that can be combined into one, like all the 420 threads be put into a 420 thread with multiple links, so it cleans it up, while keeping all of the threads.

Also, I`ve noticed the mods have been keeping alot of boring threads, and deleting funny ones. Yes, the funny ones are stupid, but come on, its NSG, it`s the place to be stupid. Like the `Cute face but shed look way better dressed up as a clown. so i'm really not to interested in these pics.` thread. It was clean, it didn`t call anyone out, and was funny. It was deleted. Sometimes I strongly disagree with mods decisions to delete threads, and other times I totally agree.

It all comes down to how regulated you guys want the site to be..

Obviously we leave a lot of slack in the rope when it comes to what is allowable, and then there is a time when the rope tightens and we need to step in and clean up the shit.

NSG is obviously one of the hardest forums to moderate - purely because of the subjective nature of the word 'shit'.
What we consider inappropriate/waste of bandwidth/nothing but utter shit, you may consider just plain old non-ski-gabber, so there would be no reason for us to delete posts or threads..and vice versa. So it is difficult. As many members know, the best thing is for you guys to pm us a link and if you think a thread is a waste of space then let us know!

Yeah, modding NSG is extremely difficult in comparison to the Ski related segments of NS. Those are easy. NSG is so subjective and in reality, if we started deleting everything that was a "waste of space", there would be little to nothing left.

There is no real topic to NSG.

Rating system that only allows a vote within 2 points of the average.

Dude... just... augh, god.

NS gets money off the ads, and that revenue pays for everything the site does. Ad-blocker does just that, blocks the ads and blocks the hits they receive. Thus, NS gets less money from its ads.

Here are your choices:

1) Use adblock software on the site and enjoy a crisp and clean website. Watch as over time the amount of cool shit NS hosts and features/sponsors declines, and see everyone else get pissed off over the ads as NS has to switch from industry ads to general annoying ads that rely on mass spamming to get profit.

2) Not use software and bitch about the ads.

3) Realize that the website you use and love needs to earn bank to pay its bills, and relish that at least the banners are mostly from industry related companies.

4) Pay for NS yourself on your own dime.

for me i just HATE it when people obviously whore around to get their post count up. i remember a thread where it said something like "is mt. hood a glacier or not?" and one of the first posts was "technically it`s a snowfield" and then at least 10 people just came in, quoted and addes something like "x2"
