I spilled water on my macbook!!! PLEASE HELP

I accidently spilled water on my macbook. it shut off and i turned it upside down to let the water drain out.. also took out the battery. i sprayed in out with air and am letting it sit to dry out...any ideas im hoping it will work...prolly a stupid thread but im not sure on what to do.

Put it on one of the burners of your stove and turn the burner on "HI'. 5 minutes should do the trick.

I had a friend spill a beer on my computer while it was playing music at a party, let the liquid drain out and wiped the keyboard off and sent it, never had a problem, you should be ok.

Let it dry out completely. Leave it in a warm room, for the longest time you can go without it.

Water isn't a big problem, its when the laptop is turned on and the water conducts electricity and fucks everything.

If you let it dry out it will be fine.

i spilled a whole glass of iced tea on my mbp, and the only effect it's had is that the keys are sorta sticky.. but they aren't anymore so its all good now

don't you worry my friend, i've left the macbook that i'm typing on in the pouring rain for hours, and i've also spilled beer on it more recently, and it still works. make sure it's in a good position for drying (upside down in an A-frame clamshell configuration) and you take the battery out, whipe away any visible water with a rag and let it dry like you have been. give it some time. if you spilled enough water you may have fried the battery port (meaning your computer might not be able to accept battery power like mine). if that's the case, then that sucks balls and that's what i've had to live with (only outlet power works and since the connection is magnetic you gotta secure it well so it doesn't yank out and don't live in a place like kenya where the power goes out all the time, it sucks). also the bad news is that there's a red indicator inside your computer that will show any technician that it's been subjected to water damage, voiding any applecare contract you may have bought, and thus it may take up to $700 to fix it, which ain't worth it. good luck man. i remember freaking out big time, like last time when i spilled beer on the keyboard i thought it would never turn on again but the next morning it did. if you see a dim light on the adapter then have hope, because it probably means that over time it will recover back to full life. try not to attempt to turn it on for another while just in case it has a short circuit problem with water still inside.

if it gets all weird buy a lot of uncooked rice and stick your computer in it.

I left my cell phone in the bottom of a hot tub for 12 hours, while hammered, and went to retrieve it the next morning. Stuck it in rice and a day later it works fine

Do you have or know anyone with a dehumidifier? Put it beside it. It'll straight up suck the moisture out of it. One of my friends was sitting on a glass table with a fish bowl on is. Long story short it broke on got like 5L or water on his laptop. A day in front of the dehumidifier and its as good as new.

if worse comes to worse and ur motherboard gets fucked like mine did when i spilled gatorade all over it there is a chance that the helpful workers at the "genius bar" will overlook the water damage if your extra nice to them. Thats what happened to me, and i got a new one with leopard on it! for free!

thanks everyone for the input wish some of u kids would grow up and only reply if u have to positive thoughts.

Im letting it dry for a while and seeing if it works.

i got water on my phone. just take out the batter, and keep it off for the next few days so it can dry. then after a few try to turn it on. happened to my phone with ginger ale and it fixed it

rice is a proven fact If you can put it in a bag with the rice its better it stops the rice from picking up moisture in the air making it more efficient

yeah it was still under warranty but the warranty was not supposed to cover water damage. i took it to the apple store and when he asked me what happened i just said that it got really really slow one day and then it got stuck on the startup after i turned it off, which is kinda what happened and he was like are you sure there was not water damage? and i said yes even though u could still see red gatorade between the keys and then he sent it in to get a new motherboard. i lost some music but other than that it was good

good luck ive done this once with grape soda, which kinda figures because grape sucks! any ways i just had to replace a $30 keyboard because it really got deep but luckly not enough to reach the mother board. i would just keep it drying

whenever i've dropped my cell phone in water putting it in a bowl full of rice has always done the trick, it sucks the moisture out, good luck getting a big enough bowl and enough rice

You pretty much did everything right. It was a good thing that you took out the battery, that probably saved you. You probably want to try a bag of rice also. It doesn't need to be covering the computer, just put a lot of rice in a garbage bag and then put your computer on top of it (open and upside down as it was before).

I didn't read everything so hopefully I didn't miss something...

But, if you leave it like this for a couple of days and then try turning it on and it works, just keep the computer. You cheated death this once, so just don't try it again.

If it doesn't work on the other hand, send it into apple. DO NOT tell them that there was water damage. If they ask you, LIE TO THEM!!! This will not get you in trouble, but if you say anything about water, you will have your warranty voided.

You said you didn't have an apple store nearby, but if you have an Apple authorized reseller, then go to them, it will save you the shipping.

READ THIS

All electronics are fixable if they get wet. Here's what you need to do, and it's gonna sound stupid, but it is foolproof.

1. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TURN IT ON BEFORE YOU DO THE FOLLOWING STEPS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
2. Soak the whole thing in the highest concentration Isopropyl rubbing alcohol you can find (normally 99%, but you might have to settle for 90% or even 70%. Both should still work). Water is corrosive to all the metal parts in there and will take FOREVER to dry in all the places you can't get to. Rubbing alcohol is not corrosive to metal, and evaporates rapidly. It will mix with the water, eliminate any further damage (hopefully before it's too late), and evaporate.
3. After soaking it for a half hour or so, leave it near a window or other place where it will be heated for 24 hours.
4. Should be good to go. I've saved myself so many times using this method. If it doesn't work, then try warranty.

it doesn't matter, they will know. like i said in my long post earlier, there's an indicator on it that they check right away that tells them that there's been water damage. instead of lying just don't mention it unless they ask, it's your best bet even though i doubt you'll have luck with your warranty. sorry bro, just being straight up.

This is false. Mac laptops DO NOT have any sort of water damage indicator sticker anywhere inside of them. On top of warrantying water damaged (actually mojito damaged) macbooks, I have also spent a lot of time inside of the computers, done a lot of research, and asked people in the apple store/mac store if they have one.... they do not.

iphones and ipod touches have the indicators, but macbooks/macbook pros definitely do not have them. Instead, they look for signs of water damage in the computer such as mineral deposits, corrosion, and etc.

So, I repeat... DO NOT MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT WATER! and if they ask you about it, LIE!

I already stated that if his computer still works that he should not worry about sending it in.

If on the other hand, his computer has already been fried, he is fucked, not matter how much soaking he does in alcohol. The directions you quoted were what to do if his computer is already fucked. Again, if something already short circuited, all the alcohol soaking in the world will not fix it, as I am sure you know.

i spilled a little more than a sip of pbr on my keyboard.....one little drop got on my motherboard and fucked up my shit. but repairing it was free so it was no biggy.

well i guess i stand corrected, but we never said anything to applecare about water damage, and we sent in my laptop (after drying, just to fix one permanently damaged aspect of my macbook) and my laptop was sent back unfixed, and the guy told us that there were indications of water damage. i myself have no experience/knowledge with repairs so i definitely believe you, but i'm left confused... how did they know, and why did they lie to us?

a whole bottle of h2o was on my mbp and i thought i lost my screen. i took the battery out and let it set for 3 days before i turned it on again, and fortunately everything has worked well since. knock on wood!

As I was talking about before, the only indicators of water damage are deposits and corrosion on the electronic components that were fried. If you used distilled water, it would be much harder, if not impossible to figure out if it was water damage, but just normal tap water, and even most bottled water has minerals in it that will leave a very noticeable trace.

or you could try cutting your finger with a mountain dew can and then carry it upside down to the recycling bin.

that didn't even make any sense considering it was my rear bumper. Given, it was nearly as magical as cutting your finger with a can of pop; but the carrying it upside down all the way to the recycling takes the cake as far as I am concerned.
