Question about tie dye?

So ski seasons over, and once again Im looking for something to do, so i thought why not tie dye a few shirts? looks sick and is cheap. so my question is what is the best dye to use to hold in the color for a looong time and not fade? and does anyone have any advice on folding the shirts for dying besides using rubber bands?

I'm a huge fan of the spiral pattern.

you lay the garment on a flat smooth surface, smooth out all the wrinkles, then make a small pleat right across where you want the center to be. Grab the very center of that pleat with a clothes pin, and begin to twist. As you twist, pleats appear farther and farther away from the center.

If you want it straight up random, just take a few rubber bands and twist and clump and get creative with it, just make sure it stays put.

You can use dye's that you put in a bucket and dip the shirt into, or you can do a different route and use little bottles that you can squeeje (im not sure thats a word)  into it.

I've tie dyed a few things. Just be creative with the color patterns and how you tie them off. Basically, just experiment a lot instead of just doing the norm. The results are a surprise and often pretty sick.

RIT works well. it depends on what fabric you're using as well. i just did it on a hoodie (pics in my profile) the way sarah explained with the spirals, and using the little squeezy bottles.

Im not a big fan of the spiral my favorite one is the green stripe.. all you do is accordion fold it from
the corner and dye it. This dye was from a kit. but rit dye works well just make sure you get soda ash
to mix with it so it doesnt run.

If you've never done it before, I would say get a kit from target or something. It'll tell you everything you need to know, including patterns. The only thing that will need is rubber bands (they don't give you much)

Last summer I tie dyed every white thing I owned. It was wicked fun!

make a couple spirals on the same shirt that like spiral into each other with different colors. so like one big spiral in the center then in the two bottom corners. that would be pretty sick.

so RIT dye will hold the color well? i want it to last for a while, the ones my friends made faded within 3 months
