Death penalty - what are your thoughts?

Whatup NS?

Im writing an essay for english that is due tuesday on the death penalty. Pretty simple format, pick a side (for it or against it) and write in the stlye of intro, con, pro pro conclusion. maybe 3 pros.

As of now I am thinking I want to write from the approach of being against it, with my pro paragraphs being:

executions cost more than life in prison

innocent people can and have been executed and later found to be innocent



So NS, what are your thoughts on the death penalty? Are you for it or against it and what are a couple major reasons you have to support your belief.

you're a moron if you think someone serving a life term gets the same amenities as those in a half way house. the legal system is about providing justice in an impartial manner, not satisfying your need for revenge, though i highly doubt you have a whole lot of experience with someone being murdered based on your reaction. things like this are not an emotional outlet for you, and you saying you'd have no problem killing someone leads me to believe you are in great need of a mental evaluation for society's safety.

i think she was saying that she had no problem killing someone that has been proven to do something as extreme as that.

and serving life, yeah, its not great but think about it.  they get three meals a day, a bed.  sure, prison is a violent place and many die in prison (wife beaters and child molesters come to mind) but ultimately with people like Ted Bundy, The Green River Killer, and Charles Manson, i think they should be put to death.  honestly, people like them couldnt possibly get reformed in prison.  Manson even admits that he ENJOYED what he did.  do we really want someone like that living on the public dole?


in places like detroit and the rest of the midwest.  homeless people break into a storefront in the winter in order to be arrested so they can be in jail for about 4 months with 3 hot meals and a warm place to sleep.

hey chief, instead of talking down to someone, try growing up and understanding that your opinion, while important to you, has very little weight in the grand scheme of things, which is the same of everyone else here (yes, me too). now while you might not care if someone you do not know is put to death, you're being very selfish in feeling that everyone convicted of a crime deemed worth of a death sentence is alone in the world without someone who does care. there is never a reason that an innocent man should be killed, and if there is any chance that he is, then it is detrimental to our legal system to do such an act, as it destroys its integrity. i am not saying that the death penalty is completely wrong, as it does seem some people are too great a danger to society to leave alive. but i do not agree with some of you views how the process should be done.

So you're accepting of the fact that our government kills a few completely innocent people once and a while? I'm sorry, I guess I hold my state to have a little higher standards and at least try to have a fair and just judicial system...

the point isnt how many, even one is too many. innocent people shouldnt die for the sake of killing criminals. isnt that why they are in jail in the first place? to protect the innocent?


but on a side note thank you for being able to have a discussion without calling me "little boy" "kid" or any other variety of pathetic insults. its refreshing.

yes, killing an innocent person is sad, and should be avoided.  but does this mean you think people like Ted Bundy, Charles Manson should be kept alive?

for the sake of not killing MORE innocent people? yeah.

you keep mentioning these awful serial killers, but the problem is there is no real way to draw a line on where a guy is for sure 100% guilty or not. id rather see them rot in jail and die for the sake of the wrongly accused not dying, than them dead but other innocent people dead as well.

Article 4 defines prisoners of war to include:
  • 4.1.1 Members of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict and members of militias of such armed forces
  • 4.1.2 Members of other militias and members of other volunteer corps, including those of organized resistance movements, provided that they fulfill all of the following conditions:
    • that of being commanded by a person responsible for his subordinates;
    • that of having a fixed distinctive sign recognizable at a distance (there are limited exceptions to this among countries who observe the 1977 Protocol I);
    • that of carrying arms openly;
    • that of conducting their operations in accordance with the laws and customs of war.

ive been to Ground Zero, Omaha and Utah Beach, Foy and Bastogne, Hiroshima, and i have been on a bought just off Iwo Jima....  those places all give off this very eerie feeling that makes one feel cold even on days were its 70-80 degrees outside.

INNOCENT PEOPLE SHOULD NOT DIE... why do you think i think innocent people should die. the death penalty is great but it should be used carefully. there should be very strong evidence leading to a guilty charge if the death penalty is whats be sought after.

last week in pittsburgh a crazy man decided he wanted to shoot police so he went outside with a gun went crazy had the cops called and they barged into his house. he shot and killed 3 of them as they entered his house.. WE KNOW HE DID IT really they shouldnt even waste money with a trial they should just kill him. that man is not innocent.

here are some numbers that might not be 100% right but are close..

death penalty case costs around 1.2 million dollars.

murder case with no death penalty costs around 750,000 dollars.

thats just the case now you have to add on the 20 or 30 years that person might just sit in prison which costs somewhere between 20-40 thousand a year. do the math.

With our current system you can feel free to add 10-30 years on death row.  Only about 1/6 of people condemned to capital punishment actually go on to get killed.  And another little tidbit:  if you factor in unsuccessful cases in California, each execution costs around $15 million.  But we sure showed them!  You need to do more than a five minute google search here, the issue is more complicated than you want it to be. 

Even if we somehow had a flawless and efficient system for executing criminals, the moral implications far outweigh all benefits (although I am still not aware of any).

evidence, confession, witnesses. have you heard about that stuff called dna it can usually link people to a place where they tend to not be.

example: john doe has never been in your house before, he sneaks in kills your dad leaves a hair or 2 at the scene, cops go to his house find his hair matches the one at the scene, cops also find your dads blood on his clothes OBVIOUSLY through DNNNAAAAAA. its kind of odd his hair was at your house and your dad blood is on his clothes when he has never been to your house...

this is somewhat of a different argument. im not really sure why people sit on death row for 10-20 years that doesnt make sense to me!!! but like i said before to even get to death row there should be verrrrrrrrryyyy strong evidence that has convicted you to the death penalty.

let me go to another example: a guy comes into your house and murders your dad, he uses a knife from your kitchen, he leaves his finger prints on the knife also as he is stabbing your dad his knife slips over the blade leaving his blood at the scene. your dads blood is on the murderer and the murderers blood is on your dad.. what was your dad doing with the murderers blood on him and what was the murderer doing with your dads blood on him and why did the murderer have a large cut on his hand that met up with characteristics from the knife?? OHHHHH YA HE MUST HAVE BEEN THE EMT THAT SHOWED UP AND HE PICKED UP THE KNIFE AND CUT HIMSELF! science is pretty on point these days if you havent figured that out yet.

i dont need more examples proving that its possible to be right, i understand there are cases where it is blatantly obvious who committed it. but when are you SURE. ok so that case is pretty cut and dry, but at what point with less evidence than that does it become not sure enough.

not to mention framing, which while extraordinarily rare, does happen.
