Replying to eastern backcountry adventures
ok, so if any of you havent seen my post in the newyork regional forum, stop right here and read that first. Good, so now that youve read it, ive come to tell the story of my backcountry adventure right here in syracuse ny. So basically, the road into Labrador mtn is in a valley and on both sides are big drumlins, prolly 800-900 feet tall, covered with trees and anywhere from 30 degrees to as steep as 50 or so. Me and my buddy have been wanting to hike these and ski them for a couple years and today we decided to do it. So i pick him up at 830 and we drive out there, we get there and of coarse its a private road, so we park right on the side and i leave a message stuck in my window 'gone skiing, be back later' so i grab my skis and brian grabs his board, we put them on our packs and start hiking. There was prolly about 30 inches of snow on the ground, with absolutely no base under it, so pretty much immediately it gets to about 30 degrees and whenever i step on a broken off branch, i slide backwards on my face. But after about an hour we get prolly 500 vertical feet up. This is about where we realize that skiing 50 degree trees with no base is not a good idea, so we take off our packs and decide to summit without them. Takes abother half hour to climb the next 400 feet or so and when we get there we turn around and start slipsliding back down. Ok ill be back to post the rest in a couple hours, im dying of hunger
