Internet Transactions questions +K

Hey guys, I've got a small business going online soon and had a few questions.
I need to be able to make transactions if people want to buy my stuff through the website.
I do not want paypal for a number of reasons.
I've been doing a bit of research but still found a few things unclear.
First, what is a merchant account, and do I need one?
Do I need a security company like verisign to back the transactions?
Is there a difference between a merchant and an ecommerce account?
Any help would be reeeeaaaalllyyy appreciated as I'm trying to get the ball rolling ASAP.
Mad karma to those that help, maybe some shwag. Thanks guys

Because there are alot of entrepreneurs on here?
I recently went through the same thing. I hate paypal but I started out with them and now I'm working on switching over to E-Junkie because I'm doing so well I can justify the cost. It starts at $5 a month but is extremely easy to use. You have to get a merchant account through verisign, 2checkout or something like that. They have a free version which works like paypal's buttons where you copy their code and change each variable for every product. It's called fatfreecart. It's simple and it works great.

Awesome. Thanks for the info.
I have a few more questions now. If I have a company merchant account, what do I use to make direct transactions through that account? Is that possible without using paypal? And what software/services do I need to make it happen?

I don't understand the question. The merchant account is required to take credit cards. Are you asking whether you can pay with it? I don't believe you can. Software depends on what you need. You don't need it for a basic customer paying you transaction but you could for other things. It all depends what service you want.
