Microecon Debate - Poverty

For my Microeconomics class I have to argue why "We should use government intervention to eliminate poverty"
I already have most of the stuff I need down but I figure NS always has some good opinions.
What are some points I can make that will shut down the opposition down?

I actually think that would be a really tough argument to make because it would involve heavy government regulation which has the potential to impose limits on things that most people would prefer not to have limits on.
The best example of microecon that I've heard of was this Indian businessman who was rolling in money and started giving out micro loans to these really poor families in India so they could buy seeds and begin growing crops, in turn selling them to make a profit and being able to pay back the loan while maintaining a way of living. They would then be able to sustain themselves once the loan was gone. I think it would be incredibly difficult for the government to implement this type of structure because of the beauarcracy that would necessarily be involved.
What were your arguments though? I'd be interested to hear them.
