so im thinkin bout growin my hair out and getting locks...anyone have them/had them?

is it true about the whole 'it takes up half of ur hair length' thing?

My friend has them and while they look steezy they are kinda nasty, they smell bad. Maybe the smell is isolated to him but I used to want them too, I don't anymore.

and apparently they only stank when u dont wash them...and yes u can wash them...but its only supposed to be like once a week, which is kinda gnarly know that i think about it.

i had them for a while and that is only sorta true. i lost some length but not half. they are a pain in the ass though. it hurts when you are making them and takes forever to get them first dreaded. i reccomend knotty boy brand wax and shampoo and also lots of beads. some dreads dont hold very well for a while and the bead is a good way to keep that shit together nice and dirty. just be prepaired for them to look like shit for the first couple of months, good dreads dont happen over night

My friend has them just long enough so he can get a decent tie in the back and he showers daily with a shower cap on the washes the dreads Sunday mornings before church (hes Mormon how ironic)

my buddy from highschool has been growing wicked cool dreads for at least 5 years now... they're ass length.

He plays guitar in a hardcore metal band, and its fucking sick when he head bangs while playing

agreed, you have to have a sorta hobo look goin to make it work, wear dirty lookin flanel. plugs also help. i cant stress this enough though, they are gonna look like shit for the first couple of months, so dont get discouraged when they dont like sweet right away. i would wash mine every sunday night with the knotty boy shampoo bar and every other time i showered i put a plastic bag over them so they wouldnt get wet.

I had dreads, they were sweet.  Chicks dig em, especially if your still in highschool.  They aren't really dirty, because these days you can get dread shampoo that doesn't have fragrances and nonsense in it and is ok for your dreads.  You will lose a lot of your hair length.  If your on the fence about whether your hair is long enough or not, it pobably isn't.  And they look shitty if they're too short.

just do me a personal favor and don't make them super huge, like fewer that are thicker? some local snowboarder has like a handful of dreads and they're all super thick in diameter and just, shit i think they look so bad. i'm not anti dread either, i've def considered it, but i think they look sooo much better when there's fewer tighter ones.

yea i would have them like...highlighter width...maybe even a lil smaller...

but i still need almost year to grow my hair out longer...this was just a spur of the moment idea so i just wanted some opinions.

and no, im not in highscool.

a few years back I had dread, loved em. But soooooooo much work if you want them clean and to look nice.
Like others said, thin looks better on white people. ANy qustions on how to maintain them and make them just shout.

my hair was give or take 5 inches when I first got them (super curly). And they wont look like that right way, when you first get them they stick up like a palm tree. That picture was taken 1.5 years after I got them. Normally they looked way longer than that but I tried to fix them up nice for my grad pic, backcombing bunches them up and makes them look much shorter but less raty.

dont use much dread wax it makes them look nasty.

i am working on mine right now slowly but surely.
i wash them with bar soap to keep them from getting greasy.
i am trying to do it as close to naturally as possible.

i had dreads for like 1 or 2 weeks in 8th grade, but two of my friends (who had no idea what they were doing) made them in like an hour (and its supposed to take like 3 or 4 for how long my hair was)

one day while i had them i was touching one and realized how shitty it was so i took them out, but one on the back of my head stayed for a month before i got a haircut and felt like a real dread

oh and i used knotty boy too, that shits awesome

trust me steezus, you're about the 1000000000000099990090777 person to tell me I look like sideshow, the name has stuck with me for life.

and blake, I paid some lady who was a 'professional' to do my mine, they look sooooo dirty cause she coated them with wax I had to take them out. My mom did mine again they looked x times better. I've given 3 people dreads they are so easy, why pay someone?

my cuz had some (hes black) they were pretty thin about the size of a pencil but bigger, anyways he would wash i think every other week with bar soap and have his professionaly washed every month and coated with honey, yes just straight up beehoney. they were sick i saw them wen they were about a month after cleaning and were really clean and just straight up baller.

theres a lot of shit thats not true about dreads.
but yea i recommend that brand wax and shampoo. it hurts a little to get them done. you do wash dreads btw.

I have had dreads for about a year now and they are just about shoulder length which is shity cause i started out with shoulder length hair. It took them about 6 months just to start looking decent. I wash my hair about once or twice a week and they hardly ever smell bad. but i got all my products off of dreadheadhq.com and their stuff works way nice. they also have a question and answer part on the site that is really helpful.

i am really close to pulling the trigger and getting mine dreaded but my hair is not super long its only like 4 in so im gonna wait a bit b4 getting mine but how long should my hair be b4 i get them done?   and i dont want really short dreads.   thanks!

Your hair should really be at least shoulder length if not longer.  Unless you want them short

im not a fan because a girl in my highschool had them and they smelled bad and she was always playing with them... it was gross... but if you like them and take care of them almost anything is worth a try atleast once... good luck, i hope it works out for ya
