so i just found out yesterday, there was a ship carrying food aid to africa off the coast of somalia, pirates took the ship and a guy from my town surrendered himself alone to let the rest of the 30 something crew go. i know his daughter fairly well and he used to let me rip around on his snowmobiles, super nice guy.
right now he is on a lifeboat with the pirates, and there is a navy destroyer withing eyesight of them trying to negotiate, they also have navy seals on board if things get crazy. i really hope he comes out of this ok.
wow and i was just going to find a link to an article, apparently they are asking 2 million for ransom, last night he tried to escape by swimming to the navy ship but they shot at him and he turned back.

so i heard that they attached a tow rope to the life boat to drag them to calmer waters. then they slowly pulled the boat towards the battleship so the 3 snipers could get a clear shot. thats some sick shit!

theres no way the government will pay any ransom money, i just listened to an interview and they said the pirates will either have to turn themselves in or die.....forreal

also going to respond in list form
1.there is no somalian army, there is 3 blocks in somalia with any sort of law. they ask you three questionsw when you enter the country...you name, where you are coming from, and what calliber weapon you are carrying. im not joking. its a piece of shit country run by citizen armys controlled by warlords. not literally blow it up, just go in and decimate them to the point where they wont even think about fucking around anymore...the militant citizens are easy to spot...they are the ones carrying aks and rpgs.
2. this is true actually, the US cant fuck up maybe one or two countries (thats a pretty big maybe, china would stand the best chance) but they could damn sure destroy somalia. and they would be gone it just hasnt been dealt with yet, and it hasnt been much of a us issue yet (captain phillips was the first US crew member to be taken hostage by them, thats why this is such a huge deal)
3. they have some money, but are not trained, funded, or armed even comparable to the US.
its not making americans look like dumbasses, im just pointing out the fast that if there is any other issue or retaliation we are most likely going to have a conflict with them....and it wont end well for them. In the battle of mogadishu (AKA the movie black hawk down.....) we lost 18 men to somalia, they lost 1500. that was in a day of combat that went HORRIBLY wrong for the US.

seems like he is a super nice dude. if the pirates kill him, then the navy will proly blow the shit out of them. if they pay and get him back, then hopefully the navy blows the shit outa them. Personally, i think that the SEALS should slip into the water after dark, scuba over, kill the pirates, and get the captain back.

That's the problem is we are scared to do anything in Somalia because we fucked up that country royaly. We captured the wrong people and it brought us nothing to the guy we wanted to get (Adid). Basically left the country lawless and a bunch of dead bodies in Somalia. A major reason why Clinton didn't want to go into Rwanda. We can't have a conflict with Somalia, the people there don't deserve it and neither does our monetary situation. It is a country, among others, that would be completely ignored had there not been pirate hijackings. So to all of you guys saying blast Somalia, think about where that got us...
On another note speaking of black hawk down. I met Michael J Durant, (the pilot in black hawk down that was captured) he has a place by my dad's friends, but he was treated pretty well by the Somalians. They generally aren't bitter towards Americans. Sorry to steal the spotlight, carry on.

thats really cool that you met him.
and i suppose you are right, the average citizens dont deserve a conflict, we should just do more to fight the issue of piracy...its a pretty big issue to just ignore flat out.
i would say we could take this as a reason to try and help somalia to become a more lawful and controlled nation but..........i think we have our hands full trying to do things like that.....
