Hey NSers...

I'm about to graduate college (finally) and am finishing up my senior thesis on the ski industry and freestyle skiing. My research on the slopes was cut short due to an injury but I still want to get some opinions and chat with some people before I finish my paper. So if you'd be down to answer a few questions or chat with me I'd be highly appreciative. And if you live in the PNW it is rumored that I have been know to buy generous amounts of beer for those who help me out.

How you got into skiing. My parents first brought me to Whistler when I was two, and that's where I started.

Why you ski and what it means to you. Skiing is just really fun. If I couldn't ski anymore, I would seriously be depressed.

How often you ski. Unfortunately, I only get to go once or twice every two weeks. Only about 30 days this year

How much money you spend on skiing. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

What your goals for skiing are. To progress as far as I can, and mainly to have fun.

What brands you like. Armada, Line, K2, Oakley, Saga, Skullcandy, Dalbello, Bern, Marker, Quiksilver, Sesisons. (what I wear/have, but I like lots more) FULL TILT!!!!!11!1!OnE

And what you think about ski media. I think that the ski media is great. I agree that Freeskier needs to focus on other people (not top 20) all the time, but it's fun to read. and, NS IS THE SHITTTTTT

My dad put me in ski lessons when i was 5 and this year my friends got me into freeskiing and i fell in love.

Skiings my passion. I love it because its aton of fun and gets you away from everyday life and is just flat out amazing.

when my home mountain is open i try to go every saturday and sunday and when ever i have school off.

i wanna be sponsored one day.

Pretty much gotta do it here. not much else to do. one of my friends did when i was really little.

Why you ski and what it means to you.

I ski because its super fun, relaxing, and another thing to conquer boredom. It means a lot to me. i would love to ski as long as my body allows it.

How often you ski.

Every day that i dont have something else going on. wheather it is the local hill, or sled accessable terrain.

How much money you spend on skiing.

lots.

What your goals for skiing are.

Dont exactly have any. would llike to put a segment out every year for the next few years.

What brands you like.

skis at the moment k2 but only cause of hellbents. hopefully i can get my hands on some bentchetlers. then i like burtons ak line for outerwear. very quality. but saga seems pretty sick too.

And what you think about ski media.

Focused too much on the park scene.  which is big yes but theres so much more out there especially bc wise to catch up on.

How you got into skiing.
I originally got into it because my parents liked it and they took me along when I was 4.  Started getting my feet wet in park when I was 10, hitting a few jumps, then I lost interest, then my interest resparked when I took park more seriously
Why you ski and what it means to you.
I ski because it is relaxing and its a great escape from the world.  Skiing means everything to me.  Skiing is the only thing that makes me forget about all my problems and just let go, take risked and be happy.
How often you ski.
about every day I dont have school, about 80 times this season
How much money you spend on skiing.
I get a pass, so about 600 in tickets, then about 1000 on gear every second or third season
What your goals for skiing are.
nothing big, I dont want to push sponsors or anything, I just want to get to a level that I feel is good and it atleast better than average
What brands you like.
Line is sick for skis, I like marker and dynistar (sp) bindings, scott poles, oakley goggles, Kombi gloves, Full tilt and Nordica boots, Salomon, saga outerwear
And what you think about ski media.
Best thing in the world, without it, I would die in the off season

close to 500 for gear and outerwear, 399 for pass, god knows what for gas money.

having fun.  purely having fun.

Armada, Line, 9th, MOMENT, ROSSI.  I ride dynastars, Rossi bindings, Full Tilt boots.  Sessions holds it down for Outerwear, Scott and Oakley goggles.

i love it.  I can't justify spending 35 on a pro movie, but around 20 is perfect.  Itunes ski movies make my life!

How you got into skiing.
My dad has always done it, he taught me when I was 2.

Why you ski and what it means to you.
I ski cause I love the feeling, I love the mountain, i love the challenge and how its different each time. I also like most of the people that practice it. It means all my life.

How often you ski.
Southern hemisphere winter I ski approx. 60-80 days and then in the northern winter around 20.

How much money you spend on skiing.
300-500 bucks a year maybe, whatever a skipass costs. it also depends if im getting new gear, but i try to economize.

What your goals for skiing are.
Get better and keep enjoying it everyday and hopefully get a job that  involves skiing.

What brands you like.
I dont prefer any...all of them are good for me.

And what you think about ski media.
I guess it's good, thats how I get to see more of it although I wish it weren't so superficial, but thats how they make the bucks. I can tolerate it.

How you got into skiing.
My mom decided it would be a fun march break activity.  I went once that year and loved it, did it a couple times in the following years, and after i went about ten times over the course of 4 years i decided that skiing is what i wanted to pursue.  At the time i was heavily into rep hockey, so i tried to ski whenever i could.  It got to the point where i hated going to hockey when instead i could have gone skiing.  So after two seasons of playing rep and skiing i decided to drop down to houseleague hockey and ski more. After 2 seasons of houseleague hockey i made the decision to drop hockey completely ( easiest decision of my life ).  For the last 3 seasons i have focused all my time and energy on skiing, and i wouldnt have it any other way.  i have be freestyle skiing for the past too seasons.
Why you ski and what it means to you.
I ski because i love it.  It is a lifestyle for me.  No matter what happens in other areas of my life i can always fall back onto skiing.  When im skiing i can forget about everything else and have a good time. 
How often you ski.
2- 7 days a week
How much money you spend on skiing.
about $2000 this year
What your goals for skiing are.
To be able to ski as long as possible and have as much fun as i can and  of course i would like to push myself to be the best i can be.
What brands you like.

And what you think about ski media
ski media is developing very fast. this site is proof of that. we now have podcasts and new videos  added to the site everyday.  its great to be able to see what your favourite pros are up to and watch creative edits that get you stoked to ski.  As far as skiing in mainstream media, there is a lot that good be improved.  The dew tour and x- games are a great media outlet for our sport but to truly improve the coverage of the events they should be televized live and on more mainstream channels.

How you got into skiing.
One of my friends in 7th grade insisted that I do skiattle (ski bus) with him. I have been hooked ever since.

Why you ski and what it means to you.
I ski to get away from the city and have some fun. I love the feeling of the mountains, and I love the natural beauty of the place. Its so fun to ski with your friends. Finally, it gets me out of the house, doing something active.

How often you ski.
usually once a week, more during breaks and some weekends. I have ~40 days this season.

How much money you spend on skiing.
I spent around $700 this year because I bought new gear, usually its ~$400 though.

What your goals for skiing are.
To have fun, relax, clear my head, and chill.

What brands you like.
K2, Armada, Line, Dynastar, Solomon, Oakley, RED, Dalbello, POW.

And what you think about ski media.
Love it. Its so entertaining, and it makes me happy whenever I see a picture/movie of someone skiing.

How you got into skiing. When I was 8, my mom purchased me a pair of skis for Christmas. I looked at the and said "I don't want these", but I gave it a chance and I fell in love.

Why you ski and what it means to you. I ski because no matter what you always have a good time. It's an outlet from school work and everyday life. Skiing means everything to me, and my life basically revolves around it.

How often you ski. 35-40 days a season.

How much money you spend on skiing. Around $1000-$1500 each season.

What your goals for skiing are. Just to become the best I can be, always pushing myself to try something new.

What brands you like. Oakley, Armada, Look, ec headwear, salomon, moment.

And what you think about ski media. I love ski media, I own nearly 20 movies, not because I enjoy watching them, but because I feel like I'm supporting companies that further our sport.

How you got into skiing.
Parents started me on the strap onto your snowboot mini skis when I was two and took me to the park that had a hill. Then did racing for about 6 years then got bored of that and started freeskiing.

Why you ski and what it means to you.
Cause it's the best feeling ever! to ahve so much speed ripping a groomer, or there being so much powder that you can't breathe, or feeling like you can just spread your wings and take flight after goin off a jump.

How often you ski.
Erry weekend and if its powdery i come down with the "bs" syndrome as my teacher called it...its highly contagious so you cant go to school. the only cure known today is powdahhhhh

How much money you spend on skiing.
mucho dinero...between pass and outerwear/skis if i need it prolly 2000-2500

What your goals for skiing are.
PILLOW LINES...to find the best and shralp it up. I'm not the best at park and stuff so i keep it to backcountry, pillows, drops, and filming.

What brands you like.
Moment, Oakley, Hestra, Solomon, Marker, FinEn...thats my setup. As for progression of the sport I'd have to say Red Bull for sure then Armada...yadda yadda

And what you think about ski media.
Premiere season is the BEST. when that chill is in the air and all you're dreaming about is the first snowfall the best thing to do is get together with some friends and get stoked on life and the upcoming season while looking back at all the marvels of the past season. As a filmer I love this and it's one of the joys of the sport that fit right in with riding. On the competition level I'd have to say JOSS/JOI and Redbull Coldrush are the sickest ones out there right now just because there organized so well (JOSS/JOI) and that they stray away from the normal comps into something that some overlook when looking at skiing. Xgames is getting pretty bunk and sold out, sure its fun to see people throw down and lets you see there arsenal of tricks for that year but not my favorite.

Way to get my mind off of things, i always think about skiing, love spending time with my friends and listening to music. Pretty laid back so I don't push myself like others on this site but thats really not my style. Just love being out there.

How often you ski.
I try as often as possible but this season was rough, 20 times cause warm weather came early:(

Probably like 600 dollars on gear. another 600 or so on gas and lift tickets i suppose.

What your goals for skiing are.
Just have an awesome time, don't get too hurt, meet some people along the way, and spend quality time with the people i love.

How you got into skiing.
My parents put me in ski lessons at age 4. I was really into racing until it got to expensive so I switched to more general stuff and eventually ended up shredding park and big mountain with my friends I met skiing at Whistler

Why you ski and what it means to you.
I ski because it is something I can push myself at. I love a challenge and I am always finding ways to improve. Also, it is the best feeling in the world to land a new trick for the first time, go big off a cliff, ski that line you have been staring at all season or just doing laps of the groomers to see how fast you can go.
How often you ski.
40-60 days a season

How much money you spend on skiing.
Luckily this year, not as much because I get a free pass and discounts for working on the mountain. I would say $600-1000 this year.

What your goals for skiing are.
720's, grab my spins, backflip a cliff, travel and compete and just have a good time. Oh ya. And no injuries!

What brands you like.
Volkl

And what you think about ski media
It gets a bit repetitive. I can't deny that I love watching new ski movies and I don't hesitate to buy the newest issue of a ski magazine when it comes out though!

Everyone in my family always skied, and we went to a small local mountain every weekend. I think I was on skis at the age of 2, so it's just always been my life.

Why you ski and what it means to you:
I ski because its my life. Its an amazing feeling and its fun. It also helps me get away from things when I need time to think.

How often you ski:
Usually 2-3 days a week

How much money you spend on skiing:
Too much, probably at least 2 grand a year and that doesnt include a pass to the moutain I ski at because I get that for free for being an employee

What your goals for skiing are:
To travel to all the places on my hit list, get better at backcountry freeskiing, and just do crazy awesome stuff. I also want to go heli skiing.

What brands you like:
Volkl, Oakley, The North Face, Orage

And what you think about ski media:
I think it can be too blown up sometimes, but I do love watching ski movies when I cant be actually skiing

Skiing means the world to me. i love the feeling after you turn around and see the sick pow line that you just killed or after you learn something new in the park.

Skiing becomes a way of life.  Its part of who i am.  There are a select few things that are as fulfilling as accomplishments on the hill.  The freedom you on the hill is amazing.  There are endless challenges.  If i had to stop skiing..... ha, not an option.
How often you ski.
average about 2 times a week from December till mid March.
How much money you spend on skiing.
$650-$1000 a year.  Sometimes more sometimes less.
What your goals for skiing are.
Never stop challenging myself.
What brands you like.
Atomic, Armada, Dynastar, Ross./Look, Line
And what you think about ski media.
It still has the intent of drawing customers but in a much more chilled out way.  I like ski media.

as often as I can, not enough this year though...

In general? That more ppl will start to do it, and have fun...
My goals? To get better (still a beginner)

How you got into skiing.- My dad took my brother and I up to Stevens and started us off with lessons when I was in third grade

Why you ski and what it means to you.- skiing does several things for me. 1- gets my mind off of everything such as girlfriend drama, school, and just life in general. Helps me relax and really come into my own. 2. Gives me the adrenaline I look for when doing action sports and a sense of belonging. Skiing is a great escape for me.

How often you ski.- Once a week usually. On breaks, two to three times if im lucky.

How much money you spend on skiing.- I spend about 500 on a seasons pass up to 300 on clothing and 600 on my setup I would say. Always looking for a bargain.

What your goals for skiing are.- As much as I would love to be out  competing and getting sponsored, I know it is too late for me and I just don't have the trick capabilities to compete with the other people out there. I just look to have fun and outdo myself as much as possible each time I go up.

What brands you like.- Im really into Armada and Oakley. I also like line, 4frnt, Empire Attire, and k2.

And what you think about ski media.- Ski media is decent but not very mainstream. The only real competitions on television are x games and the dew tour. Other than that there is basically nothing. The internet is very comprehensive however and I rely on it for almost all of the information I get from skiing.

I live 5 minutes from the hill and its the only thing to do around here in the winter.

I switched this year from snowboarding after doing it for 9 years. Best decision ever im a already shredding almost as well on skis as I did on a board. Plus skiing is way better and NS is the shit.

I ski cause it just lets me get out and get away from the real world. When I get on the lift I totally forget about everything else in life and just go have fun. Plus it just makes me happy, even if it is raining in the snow conditions are epically bad I still have fun.

How often you ski.
I try to ski at least 5 times a week but occasionally it is only 4.

How much money you spend on skiing.
Way too much. Prolly around 3000ish bucks a year

What your goals for skiing are.
Get really good at shredding the backcountry...Shane McConkey was and still is my idol. RIP SHANE

What brands you like.
Armada, K2, Marker, Nordica, Oakley Outerwear, Oakley Goggles, POC, Bern

And what you think about ski media.
Ski movies are one of the reasons I switched from snowboarding to skiing. Also they keep me alive now that all of the snow is gone in southern Wisconsin. But i think the generally media does a really poor job in showing what skiing is really about. For example the X Games are great but skiing is not just about pipe and park. What about the backcountry?!

I hope you senior thesis is kick ass and good luck with it. Plus congrats on finishing collge.

Skiing is one of my favourite things to do. I can't think of anything I would rather do all day I love the exhilaration, speed and the satisfaction of stomping a new trick or skiing a gnarly line. Some of my best friends I have met through skiing; it's a pretty big part of my life.

How often you ski.

3-4 days a week, depending on my course schedule. Every day on any winter vacations, regardless whether the hill is open or not.

How much money you spend on skiing.

$500 or less a year.

What your goals for skiing are.

Improve my skiing in every area (get better at skiing bumps, trees, backcountry especially, and learning new tricks in the park), skiing more backcountry, getting people to start skiing or improve their skiing (I'm an instructor)

The internet is great for both top pros and younger up and coming/unknown skiers to promote themselves, and makes it easy for skiers all over to see the most elite and innovative skiing, so might make progression faster. There is a lot of useless information and unnecessary hate on the internet, but overall it is a very good thing for skiing. I love watching ski movies, I'm a bit of a movie whore. I think it's best to see really creative maneouvres and editing in movies. I also love short edits that people post online, even if they don't have a high level of skiing. Photography is great, I could look at good skiing photos for hours, but it can get tiresome to look at essentially the same shot with different athletes all the time, and just plain crappy photos. Digital media overall is great for skiers without many resources, because it is convenient and accessible, allowing any skier to get decent digital photos or make edits.

How you got into skiing.

My uncle bought me gear and a season pass to Schweitzer one year and gave me lessons when I was four. I quickly became addicted: I skied more and more, until now, when I'm up every weekend during the season.

Why you ski and what it means to you.

The mountains are awesome. Skiing is my life and I couldn't imagine life without it. I ski because there's something about skiing that lets you forget about all your problems, worries, work. The mountain is also a place where everyone is friends, even if you don't know them (i.e. talking to someone on the chairlift - they'll always be friendly).

How often you ski.

40+ days per year. That's every weekend, Winter Break, Spring Break, and any other days off school (MLK Day, Presidents' Day, etc.)

How much money you spend on skiing.

Not a huge amount. $500/year excluding food and stuff on the mountain. That would only bring it to like $600 though.

What your goals for skiing are.

To have fun, improve my skills to the best of my abilities, meet new people, and (possibly) get a job at the resort - it would be awesome to get paid to ski and be on the mountain.

What brands you like.

K2, Line and Armada for skis, Marker for bindings, Nordica and Salomon for boots, Scott for poles, REI brand gloves (the best), Smith and Giro for helmets, Dragon, Spy and Oakley goggles and Saga, Sessions and 686 outerwear.

And what you think about ski media.

Ski media has really helped mold the sport into what it is today. I think ski movies are a great promotional tool and are important to keep our sport in its growing state. I think it's important for production companies to innovate to keep it fresh and new.

I think Freeskier Magazine does not represent our sport very well, so instead I subscribe to Skiing and Powder Magazines. I also think it's important for these magazines to keep innovating as well, especially in choosing which photos and stories they print, athletes they support and readers they cater to.

That said, I think ski media works well in that it has reminded us all of why we ski. I also think NS is great because no other sport has such a great meeting place.

Class trip when I was in 8th grade was my first time... i remember everyone thinking that I had been skiing a bunch before.... my friend even got me to go down a black mogul run and i ate shit... hard lol...  after that i had to beg my parents to bring me up there (2hr drive was the closest hill) ... and all through HS I only went maybe 3 times a season... it wasnt until I got to college that I even knew what a park was (I grew up in the Midwest) .. and I finally lived 15min away from a "hill" .... then i started meeting people that were really into riding... went out west for my first time soph year and fell in love... after i graduated i moved to SLT! and now skiing 100+ days a season!!!!

saying "for fun" does not sum it up at all...
i think i would be lost without it...
there is no other feeling then hauling ass down a mountain...

i got into skiing at about 12... i joined the school ski club.. (i was a gaper i know) you got to ride the bus out to the hill about an hour away every tuesday night for 4 hours of night skiing. i fell in love with skiing. the next year i got a shitty pair of K2 cruising skis. (still have them).. a season pass, and the rest is history.

5 years ago i taught my sister to ski, she is 7 now and after her second year of racing she has a perfect record. (not ONE loss in 2 years)... eventually because my brother, sister and i were all skiing my parents decided to give it a try, for both being pretty damn old when first learing to ski they both get around pretty good.

hmmm i beleive i got 50 some days this year. so i am happy

i admit i spend way to much money on skiing, i currently own 6? pairs of skis, ranging from Hell Bents, to Atomic SL skis.

Not to dis your project, but I just have a few questions/comments. First off, in research there is never a valid reason to use a participant's name, not a big deal but just a thought. Also the question about how much you spend needs to be more specific (my assumption is that you mean per year but it should say). The question about ski media is also pretty vague. My suggestion would be to try to use likert scales to get some quantitative data.

 My last observation, merely a personal feeling, is that it is going to be a bitch to interpret this much qualitative data. I think that you could do much better to distribute a quantitative suvey to the masses, and then do a few in-depth interviews or focus groups and combine all the info.

But, good luck with your project! I think I'll be posting a somewhat similar survey sometime next year for my own senior thesis!
