i played my first game today! it was so fun. i play on my schools team, we only had a few people that had played before so we didnt do that good,my knees have never hurt this much

Play for my Uni, have played rep for my city and province, U-21 Rugby Canada super league and am currently the head coach for a high school jr team...so yeah I have been around a bit.  Position is tighthead, but I am able to play anywhere in the pack and did enjoy one memorable game in the centers...3-2 smash anybody lol....

i can play every position on the field, i usually play forwards, but in high school i was wing. in club, i play for the Calgary Hornets, usually a 2nd row, hooker, or scrumhalf(i can throw the ball both ways really well). my parents are pretty well known in the rugby scene here, (my dad is a past president of the union, my mom has coached and reffed many club and hs teams) so i was pretty much born into it.

best team sport ever.

i used to play, was in the top teams till i quit at like 14... i played center or wing... even tho i dont play, i still watch it all the time, being a kiwi it is our national sport so its still a big thing to me... so yeah if your need questions and answers i can help you out?

I play for fun because my dad was one of england's top college players in college but took a tackle from behind, busted his knee, and could never play again.  There aren't any teams where I live though so I don't play seriously.

I've met a kid in england who killed somebody playing rugby with a legal elbow.

its outside or offside wing, both terms are used, but thats what i play to

No such thing as a legal elbow.

.generally the winger is referred to as the openside winger but outside would not technically be wrong, although an unusual name.

this is my 3rd year on our local club Western Alliance Rugby aka WAR. its sooooo much fun. for u17 ive played prop, 8 man, flanker, full back, and for our first year our scrumhalf was sick so i got to play that. for the u19 side of things i play either outside center, fullback, wing, and flanker. THats what i love about our team everyone can play pretty much everything so we get to play alot of different postions

Wingers are wingers, there are two of them and they dont move with the rest of the backs, they stick to their side so at any time either of them can be blindside or open side depending on which way the backs are spread. I think he may be trying to say outside centre? numbers would also be handy. 10,11,12,13, 14 or 15?

a guy on my team got a scrum cap the other day, and he plays hooker.

what are your opinions on them? personally i think they should be used after a major head injury to protect already damaged areas .

you play wing. thats it. youre 'blindside' or 'openside' depending on where the ball is on the pitch. there is no such position as 'openside wing', because you will be the openside and blindside wing many times per game...






and scrumcaps dont protect against head injuries really... only reason to wear em is to stop your ears getting mangled.

ive never heard of open, or outside wing, as it doesnt make sense to call either wing a different name unless explaining specific plays. depending on which side of the field the ball is on, either wing could be considered "outside". so it really doesnt make sense unless talking about a specific situation or play.



and scrumcaps do veeeery little for protection against head injuries. they're worn to protect the ears/hair. other than that, theres no reason.



and i played 2 years in australia before i moved to the us, and played for a highschool league in the capital district of NY. been watching the game since i was a kid tho

oh and i forgot. ive played scrum half(dummy half in rugby league), fly half, outside center, and wing. fullback too but i cant stand playing fb.




and back to the wing thing. i guess the only way to distinguish between the two would be left or right wing, as they never really switch what side of the field they're on. inside/outside/blind really doesnt make sense, but i guess left and right does.

well i don't really know because i'm just joining the team but i've never really played before, i'm a complete newb and i don't think our team is that good because we're a small international school, but what do i know. i think our coaches are cool but i'm stronger than both of them so i don't think they're pro material.

we just call the winger thats right beside the scrum the blindside winger because obviously hes on the opposite side of the scrum compared to all the other backs. or you can just call them by number

alright in upstate NY (where i play) we refer to the whiole backs as the "wing" ie:( flyhalf,inside centre, outside centre, and strongside/weakside wing" except fullback, however wen referring to the outer most wings in specific we say "the outside wing(s)(ers)"

Which I hope is the debate, I think everyone knows that there is not an "outside winger" who is always to the openside of the field.  I refer to my wingers as openside and blindside when I am setting plays , i find it helps everyone understand.  To ease the argument then just use numbers...that should settle the debate.

With regards to scrumcaps, i dont personally like them, i find them too hot and it pisses me off too much to wear one.  There was a study done that actually proved that shoulder pads and scrumcaps increased injuries as players thought they were that much more invincible and would go a little nuts.

what the fuck!? every position on the field, no, you're lying or you play such a poor standard positions just don't play a part in it.
let me break it down for you
2nd row = tallest and one of the muscular guys on the pitch gets lifted in the line outs due to hight and expected to be at most breakdowns.
Hooker normally short and round, like a barrel, not especially fast throws in in the line out as too fat or short to be lifted or lift.
Scrummy is short and rapid, very fit as is at every breakdown with good service and with the ability to kick and run when needed.
Wing one of the fastest on the pitch size is irrelevent as lomu and shane williams demonstrate, very good footballing skills and solid hands.

you are not able to play all of those positions effectively. fact. maybe if you're a flanker you can switch from centers to 8 and into 2nd row, wings can go to full back or outside centre but not your stated combinations.

personally i'm a flanker for exeter uni (england), one of the best positions in my opinion, big hit, big lines, physical stuff. 6 nations in 3D coming up boys, it's gunna be sick!

wow, OhMyBosh is the most correct person in a thread. Openside and blindside wing changes, depending on where the ball is, and the winger's relation to the rest of the back line.
