Marketing majors i have a question for you

marketing is everything you have to do to release a product.  who you want to target, price, etc.

know how to stereotype, well. thats what the jobs about in lay mans terms. you need to know your market; you need to know what people will go for, you just need the right bait and fishing spot. and on an average day im sure you would just sift through ideas and work on improving existing ad campaigns.

I just finished a Marketing major -
Many people think that you end up designing ads etc, but that isn't the case. That's what creative agencies are for

Surprisingly a fair bit on market research, of course you end up writing heaps of marketing plans as well.

Common sense really.

I didn't mind it, but keep in mind that it is a fairly broad major

Ima global busines mgmt major and it includes alotta marketing classes. the first reply was right. its alot of common sense mixed with bullshit theory that is common sense made complicated. if your good with photoshop, flash and dreamweaver and have a good sense of artsy fartsy design shit id go with marketing minor and design major. but if you do just a marketing major id try to include alot of other business type shit in with it. ex: entrepreneurship, management, accounting/financeshit for sure mostly acct for your own personal life. blah blah blah. college is just a waste of time anyways. your not going to graduate before the apocolypse in 2012

i am in marketing right now as a shophomore and i HATE math with a passion.

how soon is too soon to start looking for internships ? like after freshman year ?

^^stats is the worst class ever but luckily im just about done with it. honestly, at least at my school, every business major is pretty much the same except for accounting. the difference between all the business majors is basically 4-5 classes so even double majoring if you really want to learn about more than just one thing is an easy thing to do. i started liking accounting so i might do that with a dub major in marketing too. it really doesnt matter that much though. so many people dont even do something that relates to their degree

im a marketing major and i honestly love it. dude its creative and fun. its common sense if your a naturally business minded person, but you also need to really understand the consumers.

i recomend you take it, but you gotta make that choice for yourself.

i'm a marketing major but i don't start the actual marketing classes til next semester (junior year).  i like it, lots of math, accounting, and IT stuff to start which sort of sucks but that's just a basis for all business majors.  like he^ said, it's good to be business minded, it's very broad, and it's not too difficult.

it really doesn't matter a whole lot what you choose if you're in business.  it's all who you know, not what you know.  if you think you'll enjoy studying marketing, then by all means go for it.  most people don't graduate with jobs relating directly to their major anyway.

and never too early to start interning....i'm doing one this summer but honestly would have done one earlier if i tried and had been offered.  just put yourself out there and try to get in an office somewhere or talk to someone in your desired field of work.  can't hurt.  network network network.

I was but left it and ended up in a different degree(s). 

Marketing itself was interesting and like has already been stated mainly common sense.  I originally wanted to write commercials etc and thought this would be a way to get into that...it isnt, that is normally contracted out to external agencies, i had some meetings with people who do that here and the majority of the people they have writing and designing their advertisments were actually art grads, not business majors. 

With regards to math, all business degrees have a fair bit actually, for our program we had to do 2 stats classes, calculus, accounting has a lot of math and so does finance.  All of these are required, all of these drain your very life out in front of you.  Like they said above, the difference between any business degree is really only 3 classes so you will have to do all the other breadth shit that sucks to graduate with your marketing degree, and that was one of the contributing factors that made me change programs. 

Personally, I found business restrictive, it mattered what kind of shirt you wore, (fyi ski shit is frowned upon) it mattered what bars you went to and who your friends were.  I am not down with that shit and found that business was too ruthless and too restrictive towards my creativity. I dont need a business degree for my planned carreer so I switched my major (I was a double major so it wasnt that big a deal for me to switch) now I will be graduating with 2 full degrees and am much happier.  I look forward to going to class and dont only attend the minimum to pass, my GPA improved to. 

Try it you can change and, overall, do something you like. These are the best years of many peoples lives, dont waste them training to be another corporate drone in a cubicle if you dont really want that future.

Marketing jobs are available, need to work and apply yourself for these desirable positions.  Every reasonable sized brand no matter what the industry has a marketing department. 

True, but you can't discount that the vast majority of jobs are given out based on nepotism and networking rather then on blind interviews etc.  One of the main things I took away from business school.
